After end of Round 2, Shubhankar Sharma leads the WGC-MEXICO Championship by 2 shots with a score of 11 under par.

The best performance by an Indian in a WGC event was a fourth place finish by Jeev Milkha Singh in 2009.

Wow! Nice to see the Jeev comment above -- we tend to forget how much of trailblazer Jeev was for most Indian golfers.

Terrific stuff from Shubhankar ... Here is interview after the second round from PGA tour.

Sharma soars into the lead in Mexico
Sharma's greatest asset is stable mind, and he has not shown any moments of being overwhelmed.

Even so, there has been a few surreal moments, such as warming up the range before the second round.

Jordan Spieth, The Open champion and former No. 1 in the world, was hitting balls behind him. And then when Spieth left, world No. 1 Dustin Johnson took his place. It was hard for Sharma not to glance at over his shoulder.

"I couldn't ask for anything better," he said.

Sharma had such control over his game that he putted for birdie on every hole except the par-4 eighth, where he escaped from the trees into a bunker, blasted out to 12 feet and saved par. He shot 31 on the back, finishing with a gap wedge he hammered to 10 feet for a final birdie, and he walked off the green to a big ovation.

Shubhankar Sharma seems like the most exciting new name in Asian (if not world) Golf over the past 6-8 months.

He is currently leading both the Asian and European tours, so he is the hottest player on both tours in the last several months.

A strong finish in a WGC event would make him the hottest new name in world golf. This WGC event has 45 of the top 50 players competing in this no cut event where the last place finisher wins 50K.

So today was the first full round I have watched of Shubhankar - 5 birdies and 3 bogeys; and he stays 2 shots ahead of the field. A lot of players are really close with 8 players within 3 shots of Shubhankar including Mickelson (who he will pair with tomorrow), Garcia, Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas who is 4 behind but set a course record today. His putting on the back 9 was off otherwise he could have done and dusted this tournament already but solid save on the 18th to at least end strong.

He doesn't have the length of some of the younger lot on the PGA but the rest of the game is solid and his temperament is excellent and he is certainly a player who will win a lot of tournaments.

Irrespective of what happens in Mexico tomororw, I think he should be cautious of switching to the PGA quickly where length matters a lot.

Just like today, he needs to start strong with at least a couple of birdies on the front 3 otherwise he will see his lead evaporate quickly.

Finishes the 3rd round still 2 shots in the clear. Several folks still in contention, but Shubhankar showed today that he belongs with the best....

Something new that I learned while watching him today was that Anirban's dad was the one who introduced golf to him so well done Lahiri sr for getting the game going for our 2 best players.

He's even par through 4 holes today but has slipped to T2 with Mickelson. Long way to go still.

Bogeyed the 5th; struggling with both accuracy and his putting. Very nervy start.

He does not even try to get to the hole in 2 on the easy par-5 6th. I think he is just trying to consolidate a top-10 finish at this point.

Hopeful the nerves have settled after 7 holes and being 2 back SS just plays a bit aggressive.
Played too safe the first 7 holes and hence lost his 2 shot lead and is now 2 back.

Justin Thomas was 11 behind the leader Sharma after 2 rounds.
He is now 1 ahead of Subhankar at -13 and just 1 of the lead!!!
