2012 Majors / WGC events

Post by PKBasu »

Sadly, there is no Indian playing in the first Major of the year -- the Masters at Augusta National. Jeev had done well here in past years, so it is sad to see Arjun and Daniel not making the breakthrough.

After Day 1, Vijay Singh (the Fijian great of Indian descent) is at T10, three strokes off the lead (which is with the aging Lee Westwood, the perennial also-ran in Majors). Nice to see Vijay do well after a long time, and let's hope he can sustain it. Tiger Woods is 2 strokes further back at T29.

Vijay continues to have trouble finishing four rounds of good golf -- which I attribute to the ravages of age. He ended T27. Of course, the pre-tournament favourites -- Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy -- did even worse, finishing at T40. Surprise winner: Bubba Watson, in a play-off against Oosthuizen (who had an "albatross" during the day -- 3-under par on a 5-par hole).

Daniel Chopra has qualified for THE OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS - the 3rd major of the year.
He finished in the Top 8 at the International Final Qualifying held at Gleneagles, Dallas.
Arjun also tried and withdrew after 1 round of this 2 round qualifying.

Anirban Lahiri had won the Asian qualifier earlier to qualify for THE OPEN.
:goodluck: to both

Excellent that we'll have two Indians to follow at The (British) Open Championships this year.

Jeev is second alternate from the European Qualifying for the US Open.
Just missed by a shot and Arjun missed by 2 shots in the US sectional qualies.
So 2 close misses from next weeks U S Open.

There are three Indians (two citizens, and one NRI with an Indian father) playing at the The (British) Open championships, starting later this week: Jeev Milkha Singh (as winner of the Scottish Open), Anirban Lahiri (qualifier from Asia) and Daniel Chopra (qualifier from America). Plus Vijay Singh (the Fijian great of Indian descent) is also there.

Jeev has made a great start at this year Open Championship. What better way than getting a birdie on first hole. As Jeev is playing in the 5th group, the birdie also put him on the top of the leaderboard. Par on 2nd. On difficult 3rd hole he makes another par to pass a major hurdle as lot of players are dropping shots here. And then he birdies the 4th hole to consolidate his position as the sole leader.

Jaidee scores a birdie on 2nd to take the sole 2nd spot. It is early but good to see two Asians on first two spots on the leaderboard. So far 8 birdies have been scored and 2 are from Jeev.

1 Jeev Milkha SINGH 4 -2
2 Thongchai JAIDEE 3 -1
T3 Todd HAMILTON 5 PAR
T3 Justin LEONARD 3 PAR
T3 David DUVAL 2 PAR
T3 Raphael JACQUELIN 2 PAR
T3 Miguel Angel JIMENEZ 2 PAR
T3 Stephen AMES 1 PAR
T3 Kyle STANLEY 1 PAR
T3 Stewart CINK 1 PAR

Par on par 3 5th

Par 4 6th is playing difficult too. So far 6 bogeys, 1 do.bogey and 5 pars on this hole. Let's see how Jeev does.

Par on 6th

1 Jeev Milkha SINGH 6 -2
T2 Thongchai JAIDEE 4 -1
T2 Rafael CABRERA-BELLO 2 -1
T4 Matthew BALDWIN 8 PAR
T4 David DUVAL 3 PAR
T4 Miguel Angel JIMENEZ 3 PAR
T4 Stewart CINK 2 PAR
T4 Jamie DONALDSON 1 PAR
T4 YE YANG 1 PAR
T4 Davis LOVE III 1 PAR

Par 5 7th. So far 2 birdies, 5 pars, 5 bogeys and a triple bogey

Here comes a bogey :( So Jeev drops to -1 and he is in a 5-way tie for the lead. Not bad at all as Jeev is still a leader after 7 holes among 42 players on course.

T1 Matthew BALDWIN 9 -1
T1 Jeev Milkha SINGH 7 -1
T1 Thongchai JAIDEE 5 -1
T1 Miguel Angel JIMENEZ 5 -1
T1 Rafael CABRERA-BELLO 3 -1
T6 Tim CLARK 2 PAR
T6 Paul LAWRIE 2 PAR
T6 Adam SCOTT 1 PAR
T6 Alan DUNBAR 1 PAR
T6 Matt KUCHAR 1 PAR

Jaidee too drops a shot. 4-way tie now

T1 Jeev Milkha SINGH 7 -1
T1 Miguel Angel JIMENEZ 5 -1
T1 Rafael CABRERA-BELLO 4 -1
T1 Paul LAWRIE 3 -1
T5 Garth MULROY 11 PAR
T5 Matthew BALDWIN 10 PAR
T5 Thongchai JAIDEE 6 PAR
T5 Adam SCOTT 2 PAR
T5 Alan DUNBAR 2 PAR
T5 Vijay SINGH 1 PAR

Par on 8th. Now only two players at -1.

T1 Jeev Milkha SINGH 8 -1
T1 Paul LAWRIE 3 -1
T3 Matthew BALDWIN 10 PAR
T3 Thongchai JAIDEE 6 PAR
T3 Miguel Angel JIMENEZ 6 PAR
T3 Rafael CABRERA-BELLO 5 PAR
T3 Adam SCOTT 2 PAR
T3 Alan DUNBAR 2 PAR
T3 Vijay SINGH 1 PAR
T3 Nick WATNEY 1 PAR

Good tee shot on par 3 9th by Jeev. Chance for a birdie.
Yes!!!! He gets a birdie. So he takes the sole lead once again!!!
Lawrie also birdies to join Jeev at -2

T1 Jeev Milkha SINGH 9 -2
T1 Paul LAWRIE 4 -2
T3 Ernie ELS 2 -1
T3 Lee WESTWOOD 1 -1
T5 Thongchai JAIDEE 7 PAR
T5 Miguel Angel JIMENEZ 6 PAR
T5 Rafael CABRERA-BELLO 5 PAR
T5 Alan DUNBAR 3 PAR
T5 Ian POULTER 2 PAR
T5 Zach JOHNSON 2 PAR

Jeev makes a turn as he reaches the tee of the par 4 10th hole.
Wayward tee shot lands on a rough. However, he reaches green with 2nd shot.
Paul Lawrie on fire as he birdies 3rd hole in a row to take the sole lead. While Jeev gets his par. So Jeev loses the lead for the first time. Lee Westwood birdies his 1st 2 holes to join Jeev on 2nd spot.
Tiger Woods opens his campaign with a birdie.

1 Paul LAWRIE 5 -3
T2 Jeev Milkha SINGH 10 -2
T2 Lee WESTWOOD 2 -2
T4 Ernie ELS 3 -1
T4 Tiger WOODS 1 -1
T6 Adilson DA SILVA 13 PAR
T6 Thongchai JAIDEE 9 PAR
T6 Simon KHAN 9 PAR
T6 Miguel Angel JIMENEZ 7 PAR
T6 Adam SCOTT 5 PAR

Jeev birdies the par 5 11th hole to tie for the lead once again.

T1 Jeev Milkha SINGH 11 -3
T1 Paul LAWRIE 5 -3
T3 Ernie ELS 4 -1
T3 Tiger WOODS 1 -1
T5 Adilson DA SILVA 13 PAR
T5 Thongchai JAIDEE 9 PAR
T5 Simon KHAN 9 PAR
T5 Adam SCOTT 5 PAR
T5 Alan DUNBAR 5 PAR
T5 Ian POULTER 4 PAR

Look at the leaderboard above. Jeev, Lawrie, followed by Ernie and Tiger. ;)

Jeev drops another shot on par 3 12th :( Once again, Paul Lawrie takes the sole lead.

1 Paul LAWRIE 6 -3
2 Jeev Milkha SINGH 12 -2
T3 Ernie ELS 4 -1
T3 Graeme McDOWELL 3 -1
T3 Tiger WOODS 2 -1
T3 Charl SCHWARTZEL 1 -1
T7 Adilson DA SILVA 14 PAR
T7 Thongchai JAIDEE 10 PAR
T7 Simon KHAN 10 PAR
T7 Adam SCOTT 5 PAR

Disaster for Jeev as he makes a double bogey on 13th. :damn: He drops to par. Jeev is only the 2nd player not to par the easy 13th. :(

1 Paul LAWRIE 7 -3
T2 Thongchai JAIDEE 11 -1
T2 Adam SCOTT 6 -1
T2 Ian POULTER 6 -1
T2 Bubba WATSON 5 -1
T2 Graeme McDOWELL 4 -1
T2 Tiger WOODS 3 -1
T2 Charl SCHWARTZEL 2 -1
T2 Jason DUFNER 1 -1
T10 Adilson DA SILVA 15 PAR
T10 Jeev Milkha SINGH 13 PAR

Tiger following Jeev's card so far with birdies on 1st and 4th. Daniel Chopra opens his campaign with a bogey. Vijay goes to +2 with a bogey on 6th. Lawrie drops a shot to join Tiger and Adam Scott for a 3-way tie at -2. Jeev strikes back with a birdie on 14th

T1 Paul LAWRIE 8 -2
T1 Adam SCOTT 7 -2
T1 Tiger WOODS 4 -2
T4 Jeev Milkha SINGH 14 -1
T4 Thongchai JAIDEE 12 -1
T4 Ian POULTER 6 -1
T4 Bubba WATSON 5 -1
T4 Graeme McDOWELL 5 -1
T4 Aaron BADDELEY 3 -1
T4 Charl SCHWARTZEL 3 -1

Jeev has played last 4 holes without a par at 1 over. Vijay makes his first birdie to go to +1. Jeev pars the 15th

T1 Paul LAWRIE 9 -2
T1 Adam SCOTT 8 -2
T1 Tiger WOODS 5 -2
T4 Adilson DA SILVA 17 -1
T4 Jeev Milkha SINGH 15 -1
T4 Thongchai JAIDEE 13 -1
T4 Zach JOHNSON 7 -1
T4 Bubba WATSON 6 -1
T4 Graeme McDOWELL 5 -1
T4 Aaron BADDELEY 3 -1

Tiger is hot with his 3rd birdie and now the sole leader.
1 Tiger WOODS 6 -3
T2 Paul LAWRIE 10 -2
T2 Adam SCOTT 9 -2
T2 Bubba WATSON 7 -2
T5 Adilson DA SILVA 17 -1
T5 Jeev Milkha SINGH 15 -1
T5 Thongchai JAIDEE 14 -1
T5 Simon KHAN 14 -1
T5 Zach JOHNSON 7 -1
T5 Charl SCHWARTZEL 4 -1

A bogey on 17th means Jeev is back on par and out of top 10 :(

1 Tiger WOODS 7 -4
T2 Adam SCOTT 11 -3
T2 Bubba WATSON 9 -3
T4 Paul LAWRIE 11 -2
T4 Zach JOHNSON 9 -2
T4 Graeme McDOWELL 8 -2
T7 Matthew BALDWIN 18 -1
T7 Adilson DA SILVA 18 -1
T7 Thongchai JAIDEE 15 -1
T7 Matt KUCHAR 11 -1
...

T18 Jeev Milkha SINGH 17 PAR

Jeev finishes the first day at par. Currently T20th
Jeev played well in first 11 holes, but last 7 holes turned out to be difficult.

After 8 holes, Anirban Lahiri has made a pretty decent start to his first Open championships, and is placed T22 on 1-under par. Jeev Milkha Singh and Fiji's Vijay Singh had even-par rounds, and now sit at T38.

Super debut round for Anirban!!!
2 under to be T14 and no bogeys in the card.
It was a dream round with no blemishes and 2 birdies.
Jeev messes it up on 12 and 13 or else he would have been in top 10.
Daniel had a poor round.
Good luck for tomorrow when the cut line is drawn.
Hope all of them make it to the weekend.
