Excuse my starting yet another topic... the reason is juniors often get litle notice when clubbed with seniors. Years of working at newspapers have taught me that... so I thought a separate thread for them at least on a sports-loving forum should be their right.

GREAT NEWS FOR INDIAN JUNIOR GOLF
Corporate support for junior Tour
Nokia, one of the world leaders in mobile communications have been roped in to sponsor the Indian Junior Golf Tour for 2004. This is the first time, the corporate sector has stepped in to promote golf at the grass-root level.
Called the 'Nokia N-Gage QD All-India Junior Golf Tour', after its new model, Nokia N-Gage QD, which is to be launched soon, the Junior Tour which is run by the Indian Golf Union, will now be managed by Tiger Sports Marketing, who have for the last seven years managed and marketed the Hero Honda Indian Professional Golf Tour.
The junior Tour has a number of events, about a dozen, and Nokia have picked the five big ones – Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western and All India.
The 'N-Gage QD All-India Junior Golf Tour' tees off with the Northern India Juniors / Sub-Juniors' at the Army Golf Course on June 1, 2004. The tournament runs from June 1 to 4. It
features juniors competing in four categories namely - A (15-17 yrs), B (13-14 yrs), C (11-12 yrs) and D (ten yrs and below).
At another point of time, I will give some info on India’s leading juniors to give forum members an idea of the upcoming talent.
I will try and post news on junior golf here.

Excellent stuff, and I wish similar sponsorship could be organised in other sports such as tennis.
One big problem Indian sports have faced, though, is "graduating" players from the junior to the senior ranks. I recall that Gaurav Ghei was a spectacular prospect as a 15-16 year old, but he has hardly lived up to that potential...

India has a couple of spectacular young golfers though and I recall starting a Viraat thread sometime last year when he was at the world junior golf championships.
Lots of sponsorship these days (compared to 5-10 years ago) considering that the tobacco guys are out of sports completly. This can only help in the future.
PKB: A top 5 junior when he graduates to the senior ranks is playing agianst the (conservatively) the top 5 juniors of the last 10 years (50 players) + very many others who matured later or were not ranked very high in the juniors so a high junior ranking does not mean very much.

Ghuman fires 69 to lead Northern India Juniors
New Delhi, June 1: Balpreet Singh Ghuman fired the day's best round of three-under 69, to leap into the opening round lead in the senior-most category of the Northern India Juniors/Sub-juniors, being played at the Par-72, Army Golf Course today. The tournament is the first leg of the N-GAGE QD All India Junior Golf Tour.
While Ghuman stole the show in Category A, restricted to the 15-17 year age group, Fatehbir Singh Dhaliwal carded a level-par 72 to lead in Category-B in the 13-14 year boys. Zubin Nijhawah shot an 82 to lead the Category C in the 11-12 year age group.
Earlier, the tournament was jointly inaugurated by Sanjeev Sharma, MD Nokia India Limited and Lt. Gen. JJ Singh PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC, GOC-in-C, Western Command, the patron of the Army Golf Course.
Tied in a two-way lead in the second position in Category A were Himmat Singh Rai and Kunal Balhara. Amanjyot Singh was second in Category B at 4-over 76.
Ghuman's round was a lesson in course management. The 17-year-old erred just once in his round, that when he dropped a shot on the eighth. His outward journey, was otherwise studded with birdies on the second and fifth.
One-under on the 10th tee, the 16th ranked junior on the IGU Categroy A Merit List, played some attacking golf to birdie the 13th and 14th with series of pars thereafter handing him a two-stroke lead.
Dhaliwal, the top-ranked junior in Category B list, had an evenly matched outward journey. A 10th tee starter, the 14-year-old recorded birdies on the 12th and 14th, but lost focus immediately thereafter to bogey the 15th and 16th. On his return journey, Dhaliwal birdied his very first hole but unfortunate double bogey on the seventh paid put to the good work. He however, rectified the error with his fourth birdie of the day on his final
hole.

The event is the opening leg of the N.GAGE QD Junior Golf Tour.
Overnight leader Fatehbir S. Dhaliwal assumed a five-stroke lead in Category ‘B’ (13-14 years) at a score of 5-over 147. The duo of Ajay and Kapil led in Category ‘C’ (11-12 years) at a score of 166 while golfing sensation Viraat Bhadwar shot a 7-over 79 for a ten stroke lead in the opening round of Category ‘D’ (10 years and under)
The cut was applied at 21-over 165 in Category ‘A’ with 24 golfers proceeding to the final two rounds. Category ‘B’ witnessed the cut applied at 26-over 170 while Category ‘C’ saw cut applied at 37-over 181.
Akshay Butta, a 10th -Tee starter, began well with birdies on the 11th and 12th and another on the 14th but bogies on the 15th and 17th nullified to an extent the early advantage. He however made up with a birdie finish to his front nine. On his return journey, Akshay birdied the 1st, 3rd and 6th but dropped shots on the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 9th saw him finish the day at level par 72.

NEW DELHI, June 3: Overnight joint leader, Akshay Butta fired a career best six-under 66 to gain a six-stroke lead going into the final round, in the senior most Category ‘A’ (15-17 years) of the Northern India Junior / Sub-Junior being played at the Army Golf Course.
Another talented golfer Ajeetesh Sandhu was placed second at 218 after firing a third round one-under 71. The event is the opening leg of the N.GAGE QD Junior Golf Tour.
Meanwhile, Fatehbir Dhaliwal, led category ‘B’ (13-14 years) by three strokes, at nine-over 225. Category ‘C’ (11-12 years) witnessed another overnight leader Ajay assume the sole lead at 244. Boy wonder Viraat Badhwar opened up an astounding 19-stroke lead in category ‘D’ (10 years and below) at 17-over 161.
Akshay Butta was in ominous form today, especially on and around the greens. The 17-year student of St. James School, Kolkata returned 27 putts and hit 16 greens in regulation. “I hit the ball very well today and putted even better,” said the Royal Calcutta Golf Club player. “I also had my share of luck like on the 18th where my tee shot hit the left boundary wall and ricocheted back onto the fairway,” he said. “This is my best ever round in tournament golf and I will try my best to win tomorrow,” added the
ninth ranked junior in the IGU Merit List, who has one win and two second place finishes in a three year career in junior golf. Butta’s win came at the 2002 Eastern India Juniors on his home course, while he finished second at the Northern India Juniors at the Army Golf Course and the All-India Juniors at the KGA course in Bangalore.
Today, Butta’s round included birdies on the third, fourth (a 25 feet effort) and fifth before making the turn. Thereafter he eagled the 12th where a driver, 7-iron combination was followed by a well judged left to right 25 feet putt. Another birdie on the 14th placed him at six-under at that stage. Butta would have dropped a shot on the 15th, but saved
himself with an excellent chip in for par from 60 yards.
Meanwhile Dhaliwal’s outward journey included bogeys on the first and seventh with a birdie on the second and a double bogey on the fifth placing him at three-over on the tenth tee. On his back-nine, the top-ranked golfer on the IGU category ‘B’ Merit List dropped a shot on the very first hole but made up with a birdie on the 12th. Thereafter an unfortunate string of three bogeys on the 15th, 16th and 17th prevented him from leading by a bigger margin.

NEW DELHI, June 4: Himmat Rai launched a patient assault to upstage overnight leader Akshay Butta by a solitary stroke and claim his maiden career title in the senior-most category ‘A’ (15-17 years) of the N.GAGE Northern India Junior / Sub Junior event played at the par-72 Army Golf Course.
Rai, who shot a one-under 71 today, returned a tournament tally of two-over 290, while Butta at 291 and Ajeetesh Sandhu at 292 occupied the second and third positions respectively.

The prizes were jointly given away by Chandan Dang of Nokia India, Prakash Bhandari, Vice President, the Indian Golf Union and Maj Gen Mathew of the Army Golf Course.
If the 1st of June 2004 was a special day for Indian junior golf, with the Tour acquiring a sponsor for the first ever time in its several decade long history, the 4th of June held a special significance for Himmat Singh Rai.
The 17-year old Modern School Barakhamba Road student started playing the
Junior circuit three years ago, but had failed to record a single win despite coming a whisker’s breadth close to it on more than one occasion.
On the 4th of June, he got that monkey off his back once and for all. The final round started with Akshay Butta teeing off with a six stroke cushion. This was however whittled down when the Kolkata based golfer carded a double bogey on the fourth followed by another bogey on the sixth.
A birdie on the seventh was the only silver lining in an otherwise gloomy round of seven-over 79, which included as many as five more bogeys on the back-nine. Rai however, played it safe, dropping only two shots, these on the eighth and 16th. He birdied the fifth, seventh and 15th on his way to a round of 71. “I didn’t think I would win even on the 18th tee box when I was tied with Akshay. However, when he left his third shot ten feet short of the pin, I realized I could win,” said the quiet youngster, who credited his
calm temperament to his early morning yoga exercises.
Dhaliwal’s round started with a bogey and included four more on the third, fourth, 11th and 16th. A lone birdie on the fifth handed him a card of four-over 76, which proved good enough to hand him a win in his category.

NEW DELHI, June 4: Himmat Rai launched a patient assault to upstage overnight leader Akshay Butta by a solitary stroke and claim his maiden career title in the senior-most category ‘A’ (15-17 years) of the N.GAGE Northern India Junior / Sub Junior event played at the par-72 Army Golf Course.
Rai, who shot a one-under 71 today, returned a tournament tally of two-over 290, while Butta at 291 and Ajeetesh Sandhu at 292 occupied the second and third positions respectively.

NEW DELHI, July2: Amateur golf, considered to be the precursor of excellence in professional golf, received a huge boost in the country when
corporate giants Shaw Wallace announced a comprehensive umbrella sponsorship of Indian Golf Union's (IGU) National Amateur Golf Tour.
The circuit will be called the Royal Challenge Indian Golf Tour. This marks
the first time in the history of Indian amateur golf that such a sponsorship
has been signed. Speaking to the media while announcing the details of the new sponsorship on Thursday, Mr AKMA Shamsuddin, President, Shaw Wallace, said: "Shaw Wallace is very happy to announce its new association with the national amateur circuit. We hope to make this a very meaningful support to what is really the grass-root level of Indian golf."
"On behalf of the Indian Golf Union, I welcome Royal Challenge as the new Tour sponsor of the amateur circuit. Organising amateur tournaments also cost a lot of money and I am sure with corporate support such as the one provided by Royal Challenge, we will be able to develop the game further in the country," said Capt KN Harsh, President, IGU, the apex body for golf in India.
Under the sponsorship, Royal Challenge comes in as umbrella sponsors of the four regionals, the Inter-Zonals, one event at Chandigarh and Pune, and the Eveready All-India Amateur Championship.
"Royal Challenge have been magnanimous supporters of golf, and it is great that they have decided to broaden their sponsorship by embracing amateur golf. For any sport to flourish, money has to be pumped in, and it is fantastic news that Shaw Wallace is looking into amateur circuit, which will produce the Atwals, Jeevs and Randhawas of the future," said Brandon de Souza, President, Tiger Sports Marketing, which has the commercial rights of the IGU events.
The strength of Indian amateur golf can be gauged by the fact that Shiv
Kapur won the 2002 Asian Games individual gold medal at Busan, and in April this year, Harinder Gupta stunned a quality field en route to winning the Rs 10-lakh Hero Golf Chandigarh Open as an amateur.
Among the many innovations that Royal Challenge is planning to bring to the Tour is the staging of a one-day 'Handicap Golf Challenge' at each venue. The top player in each handicap category - 7-12, 13-18, 19 and above - will be felicitated by the IGU with a certificate and trophy. This unique tournament will help broadbase the game and send out a message that golf is not limited by skills and can be enjoyed by one and all. The circuit will also benefit from an accountable Tour structure and there are plans of holding clinics by leading pros for the club members during the tournaments.
