INDIAN GOLFERS ON THE MOVE - PLAYING ON FOREIGN TOURS

Post by BSharma »

US Open sectional qualifying tournament:

Shiv Kapur played at the Wynstone Golf Club in North Barrington, Illinois today and he was so close yet so far.

In a field of 38 golfers, Shiv finished third - only the top two qualify for the US Open. :(

Shiv is the first alternate and can play in the US Open if Carl Paulson or Robert Garrigus cannot go.

DANIEL QUALIFIES FOR US OPEN

DANIEL QUALIFIES FOR US OPEN

Hello everybody,
This morning I got a call from Praveen Chopra, who is Daniel's uncle, and with whom Danny spent a lot of his childhood in New Delhi. He informed me that Daniel has qualified for the US Open shooting 68 and 65 in Columbus.
I have not been able to check this on official site, because the scores have not been put up -- at least till I checked.

Shiv, as Bhushan posted sometime back, just failed, finishing third and he is first alternate from his qualifier.

WYNSTONE GOLF CLUB, NORTH BARRINGTON, IL
MONDAY - JUNE 7, 2004

36-36-72 7051 yards

Carl Paulson, Windermere, Fla., 71-70--141
Robert Garrigus, San Diego, Calif., 68-73--141
Shiv Kapur, West Lafayette, Ind., 70-74--144

Among players behind him were Ahmed Bateman (74, 73 - 147, who used to play on Asian Tour but now plays Nationwide, Scott Gutchewski (75, 73-148) (Nationwide), James Driscoll (74, 78 - 152) (Nationwide).

Daniel tied for fourth and came through US Open qualies

Post by V Krishnaswamy »

So, finally the offical result is out

Horrible playing conditions, I believe with 184 players for 33 spots. Big hold-ups.

Daniel was tied for fourth with scores of 68 and 65. He tied with Alex Cejka and Tom Pernice Jr.

Timothy Clark, Chapel Hill, N.C., 67-62--129
Duffy Waldorf, Canyon Country, Calif., 64-68--132
a-Chez Reavie, Mesa, Ariz., 67-66--133
Alex Cejka, Munich, 67-67--134
Daniel Chopra, Orlando, Fla., 69-65--134
Tom Pernice Jr, Murrieta, Calif., 67-67--134

By the way, Arjun Atwal also played. He played a first round of 73 and withdrew.

The last score to qualify was 138, which included John Rollins (Bhushan, your fav.), John Senden, and Brendan Jones (who by the way made the British Open through International qualifiers) and Steve Stricker.
At 139 there are 10 people, who went in for a play-off for sevn spots and the 10 included Bob Estes and Joe Ogilvie.

Among those missing the way were Jesper Parnevik (70, 70) and Luke Donald (70, 73). I mention them, because they have said NO to Ryder Cup spots on European team, because of a rule that requires them to play at 11 EPGA events, including Majors and WGC events.

The PGA Tour puts out a daily dozen every day and today there is a report about Daniel written by "take a guess". Finally we have a writer in India who does not refer to Daniel as Indian-born!

The Daily Dozen this link gets updated daily and you will miss the article about Daniel unless you visit this site today.

Sports India : Golf > Major breakthrough for Swedish-born Daniel Chopra

Scroll up and you will know the identity of the writer.

Thanks V Krishnaswamy for a nice article on Daniel and Shiv Kapur's exploits. It was an appropriate article at an appropriate time as Daniel's, as well as Shiv Kapur effort in US Open qualifier in such a difficult field is indeed need to be noted. We need more articles like that, which not only gives news but also present truthful facts and reflect the personality of the player so that people can connect with the players.

Sorry for moving away from golf to take a bow.

Thank you gentlemen (and ladies, if any out on the forum).

Remember, sports writing is my job -- all of us need to do something to earn a living. And if along the way, we also happen to love what we make a living from, all the more better.

My favourite quote in life:
"Happy is the man, who makes a living by his hobby" - Prof. Higgins in GB Shaw's Pygmallion.

Simi yet to finish first round

Post by V Krishnaswamy »

Simi Mehra and Nisha Sadekar are among the 30-odd yet o finish their first round in Lima Memorial Hospital Futures Classic at Lost Creek Country Club. The first day (Friday) had heavy rains leading many stoppages. The second day was washed out, cancelled without first round still being complete.
The cut will now come at enmd of 18 holes in this $ 65,000 event.
The leader is Sung Ah Yim with a brilliant 67.

Of course everyone knows that both Atwal and Daniel made the cut.

This is Atwal's first cut after nine straight misses. Young Krishen has at brought some luck, it seems.

After a modest two-over 73 in first round, Atwal played a great second round of four-under 67, but then went the other side with a five-over 76 in next. He had five bogeys in a seven hole stretch from 11th to 17th on back nine. After three rounds, Atwal (73, 67, 76) is lying tied 77th

Daniel is more consistent. His rounds have been 69, 70, 71. Please don't keep the sequence. Or come to 68 at least. He is tied 39th.
After two doubles on 10th and 11th and a bogey on 13th (five strokes dropped in four holes); he moved into top gear with an eagle on 15th, birdie on 16th and again a birdie on 18th to gain four strokes in four holes to be -3 for three days and tied 39th.

As mentioned earlier in the week Jeev and Jyoti have taken the week off.
