After a good tournament last week, Shiv Kapur misses cut this week. But other upcoming star Ashok Kumar is doing good. Its good to see the new names mking their presence felt. Ashok had a decent last week and that must be quiet encouraging. This time at halfway mark he is in the top 10, 5 strokes behind the leader. Go Ashok!!!!!!
Here are the top performers and the Indian player performances.

Jaydeep, actually you stumbled to these articles that are quiet old. There were lot of uncertainties in the beginning of this year when Asian players broke away from the previous organization to take control of the tour. The Indian golf player Amandeep Johl was one of the player who was in forefront of these changes.jaydeep wrote:Today I stumbled on to this article about 'The Asian PGA members decided to form a new organisation called Tournament
Players Division – Asian Tour from 2005.' Check this article at http://www.golftoday.co.uk/news/yeartod ... anpga.html
Another good news for Asian PGA golfer is players who compete in its events will be awarded world-ranking points ... This declare when Federation of PGA Tours accpted Asian PGA as their sixth member ... This definetly boost golf in asia and we will see more top players playing in Asia ... Check the news link ... http://www.golftoday.co.uk/news/yeartod ... anpga.html
Jaydeep.
Second article is also many years old as Asian tournaments have been getting world ranking points for quiet a while.

A good day for Ashok as he moves up into top 5. With a second best round of the day Ashok moves to T4 at 7 under. His 4 under included 6 birdies and two bogies. The best round of the day belonged to Thongchai Jaidee who had 8 birdies and no bogies and he now leads the field by two.
The Asian version of Jay Haas, 48 year old Boonchu RUANGKIT of Thailand is at par with Ashok, while former US open winner Corey Pavin is one behind Ashok.
A top 3 finish will bring Ashok close to 2005 APGA card. Go Ashok!!!
The scores after the 3rd day are:

What's Corey Pavin doing in an APGA event? Perhaps he wanted to see Vietnam...
Very good to see that Ashok Kumar is above Pavin on the leaderboard!

Ashok had a disappointing final round of one-over 73, and finished fifth overall. Here's a rediff report:

Ashok Kumar could not improve further and finally finished sole 6th after closing out with his first over par round (+1). He went birdieless today and scored one bogie on the 15th hole. This must be his biggest paycheck on the golf field and there may be some nervousness to hold on to his position. He almost doubles his earning on the Asian tour with $7000, and climbed to 90th position on the moneylist, but still around $16,000 behind the 70th position. The final scores are:

Ashok Kumar, who was a rookie this year as he came through APGA qualifying tournament early this year, will have to head back to the qualifying tournament again. The problem with rookies is that they get limited number of opportunities. This was the last tournament with full field for AAsian tour. There are two more open tournaments ( Volvo China Open, Omega Hongkong Open) that are jointly hosted with EPGA. But this also means that there will be limited number of openings for APGA members. The final tournament would be Volvo Masters of Asia for the top 60 players in the money list. These 60 players also get the 2005 playing rights.
Ashok Kumar finishes 90th on the money list. Arjun Singh, who is 79th on the money list is also fighting for 2005 card. He still has a chance to get it as he is eligible to play next two tournaments. Check out herehow are the other Indians doing in the APGA tour.

The New York Times sports page appears to think that Indians can't be sportsmen. The first time Leander's name appeared on that sports page (when he beat top-seeded Jan Kodes Jr. in the first round of the Australian Open junior singles in 1990), he was mentioned as Leander Paes (Indonesia).
By contrast, when the NYT first mentioned the then-Indonesia-based LN Mittal in its business pages, its headline said "Calcutta-based company bids for Bethlehem Steel" (in 1992; the bid for its wire and rod units was unsuccessful). It was right about Mittal's business origins, but he was based in Jakarta and Surabaya then, not Calcutta.

The abbreviation that the sports officials use for India is "IND" and the US newspaper editors get it confused with Indonesia. Today's report in my local newspaper has Ashok Kumar listed as a golfer from Indonesia!
I will not try to call my local newspaper editor about the confusion with Indonesia because I do not think more then half of the Americans have any idea where Indonesia is!
It reminds me about the plight of a Pakistani friend in the 1970s when I lived in Dallas, Texas. He was trying to explain to his college graduate friend about the location of Pakistan, and after getting frustrated by the lack of his American friend's knowledge of the world geography he simply told him that Pakistan is located just north of Dallas and one can get there by taking highway I-35. The American friend informed him that he would visit Pakistan shortly after that conversation.

Ha ... ha ... LOL ... Simply hilarious Bhushan ... But yes many people misunderstood Ind as Indonesia or vice versa.
Ashok Kumar played well to get Top 10 position but if he made under par round then he would be in Top 3 ... Anyway this would be good experiance and confidence boosting performance for Ashok Kumar in just ahead of his APGA Qualies.
Jaydeep.

A talk radio guy here in the US was commenting yesterday about Corey Pavin being at Vietnam. It was rather unthinkable for him. He was hoping to see the Fallujah Open or Baghdad Open in 20-30 years in Iraq where Americans would be playing Golf ...
By the way, the Ho Chi Minh city challenger in tennis has been on since 1998 and those like Srichaphan, Paes, Bhupathi, Marin, Sa, Salzenstein, Woodbridge, Ullyett, etc have all played there (Bhupathi-Tramacchi won the doubles in the first verison in 1998)
