Asian golfers shone in 2015, but tour outlook uncertain

The attempt to merge the Asian and European tours is being contested by the players on the Asian tour. A large number of Asian golfers have used the Asian tour to start their professional career before moving on to the bigger tours. This merger effectively gets rid of the Asian tour for the lower ranked players on the Asian tour. For every 2-3 Indians who might qualify for the combined tour, there will be 6-7 Indians who will miss out. The same will hold for so many countries in S/ SE Asia as well.

@Raj @Kumar @Prem @Ajay Your thoughts?

@ Suresh Although the merger looks good on paper, but it will be a nightmare for the middle and lower ranked Asian Tour players if their interests are not protected. Currently these players are making a good living because of the Tour and an average player makes an earning of $30,000-$40,000 a year. Influx of European players will certainly have impact on the earnings.

There has been some changes done to the Asian Tour Board and I hope the new members will do the needful for the Asian Tour golfers.

Suresh - I am also not sure whether this will go ahead. There are already few big events, which are co-sanctioned which attracts few big players from Europe but a huge Asian contingent gets to play these.
There are many Asian Tour events with total prize money of USD300-500k, which may not be attractive for European Tour players as they have bigger events during the same week.
The only worry will be if the schedule is merged and these so called Asian Tour smaller tournaments are dropped!!! Else, if all the events in both Tours are held- I would think that it shouldn't make much difference.
Personally I feel that Asian Tour should continue as is, since it has really promoted golf in the region and helped produce many good golfers. Let's wait and watch what happens....
