2011 Asian tour - ICTSI Philippine Open

Post by ajay »

Himmat Rai has been jointly at the top of the leaderboard for first two days. Can he pull off this in the next two days?

In 2011 we already have four winners on various tours. SSP Chowrasia won jointly hosted European/Asian tour event (Avantha Masters ), and Anirban Lahiri won on Asian tour (Panasonic Open). We also had Gaganjeet Bhullar winning on European Challenge tour (The Gujarat Kensville Challenge) and Daniel Chopra winning on Nationwide tour(Fresh Express Classic). Except Daniel Chopra , all other wins were on Indian soil.

Overall good display by the Indians in this tournament as 6 out of 8 Indians made the cut.

1 Himmat RAI 68 70 -6
8 Digvijay SINGH 70 72 -2
22 Chiragh KUMAR 75 69 E
35 Sujjan SINGH 71 74 1
41 Manav JAINI 72 74 2
60 Vikrant CHOPRA 76 72 4
****** CUT (+4) ************
79 Amardip MALIK 74 76 6
79 Mandeo PATHANIA 75 75 6

:notworthy: CONGRATULATIONS Himmar Rai! :notworthy:
Among the upcoming crop of golf players like Lahiri and Bhullar, Himmat took a next step in his young golf career as he won Handa Singapore Classic after a tense five player playoff.

He becomes the third Indian player this year to win an Asian tour event. SSP was the first one to win Avantha Masters, the joint event with European tour. He was followed by Lahiri who won the Panasonic Open. Both of these events were in India. Himmat Rai now wins an event outside India.

Himmat jointly led the tournament from 2nd round onward. It is tough to lead multiple rounds and when he remained at joint top position after third round, I thought he will fall under pressure on the final day. After front nine, he was +1 in the final round and I thought my fears are coming alive as he had dropped to T6 position. He made a birdie on 11th seemed like clawing back, but a double bogey on 13th hole made me give up on him and I went to bed.

Now I just checked and to my pleasant surprise I found that he won the tourney. Well Himmat didn't give up (How can he when his name is Himmat!) and persisted. This is how it must have turned out (my imagined report :) ). The turning point of the event was 15th hole when he was 4 strokes behind the leader. On 15th, the leader made a double bogey and Himmat made a birdie - that is a swing of three strokes. Himmat at -8 must be still behind another player by 2 who playing 3 groups ahead at -10 must be about to complete his final hole. But Himmat was back in contention. With another birdie on 16th and the new leader dropping a shot on 18th, he got back the share of the lead. With 5 players tied at -9 and three players still on the course, it must be really tense finish as all three must be trying for that elusive birdie that can put their nose ahead of the rest. But no one could do it and it was a 5 player playoff.

The tension continued to brew as now there were 5 players trying to put their nose ahead. And they had to play 6 more holes to finally decide a winner when Himmat Rai sank a 25-foot birdie putt.

Anyway, here is more authentic report.

Congrats HIMMAT RAI. :notworthy:
Finally some good news for Golf fans after Jeev and Shiv continue to throw away halfway leads, with poor finishing rounds.
To win a play-off, you need nerves and Himmat showed that he can handle pressure.
Hope to see you soon in European Tour...

Final round has started, and Jeev in on the course and well in contention as he is T2 (with 3 other players) at -10, just a stroke behind the leader.

Jeev started well with an eagle on 2nd hole followed by a birdie on 3rd. He was on par in 4th hole and now playing the 5th hole. The overnight leader Chan has dropped two strokes and he is now tied with JEev on -19. Mo leads the field at -11.

As I was typing the above lines, Mo and Chan exchanged their positions with a bogey and a birdie respectively. Seems like it will be a really an interesting day.

Update
Chan dropped a stroke on 5th (Jeev had a par) and now 5 players, including JEEV have the share of the lead! The real move of the day so far is Wiratchant who is 5 under for the day after 8 holes and he his now a joint leader after starting the round at T12.

Update Jeev pars 6th, Mo birdies 6th to take sole lead. Karlberg drops a strike and the share of lead. The players in contention at this time are
POS Name To Par Holes
1 MO Joong-kyung -11 6
2 Thaworn WIRATCHANT -10 9
2 Jeev M SINGH -10 6
2 CHAN Yih-shin -10 6
5 Rikard KARLBERG -9 6
6 Adilson Da SILVA -8 8
6 David GLEESON -8 7
6 Zaw MOE -8 6
6 Joonas GRANBERG -8 6
