US PGA Tour 2022-23

Post by arjun2761 »

Couple of PIO success stories on the US PGA Tour.

1. Sahith Theegala (25 year old) has broken in the top 30 OWGR and is 11th in the current Fedex Cup standings. His 5 Top 10s is second on the PGA tour this year, so he has been consistently good.

2. Akshay Bhatia (21 year old) has gained special temporary membership for the rest of the year after finishing 2nd in the Puerto Rico Open where he won $414K. I believe he is the youngest player on the PGA tour with some form of membership.

Akshay Bhatia has a very strong 4th place finish in last week's PGA tour event in Mexico for a $377K payout in which he played in the final pairing with Jon Rahm and eventual winner Tony Finau (respectively #1 and #11 in OWGR). He is on track age wise to be among the very best although not all younger players achieve their potential.

Akshay Bhatia wins the Barracuda chamionship on the PGA tour (played using a stableford scoring system). He's now in the top 60 on the PGA tour this year and is tracking (age-wise) with many that became stars. WIll be interesting to see if he can realize his immense potential!

Awesome performance from Bhatia. Hope he wins the grandslam in future. He was considered one of the can’t miss prospects when he turned pro.

Sahith Theegala shot a final-round 4-under par 68 on Sunday to win the Fortinet Championship by two shots over S.H. Kim. It’s Theegala’s first PGA Tour victory.

Awesome win by Sahith who led throughout the final round and was a comfortable winner in his first win on the PGA tour. He has been in contention on the final day a few times before, so this is a breakthrough for him. Moves to #29 in the world rankings which is still behind his career high of #23.

On the PGA Tour, Akshay Bhatia shot an excellent -6 in the first round, and is tied for 4th (2 shots behind the leader). The 1st round was a very low scoring one with 125 players (out of 144) at even par or better!!

Good see that Akshay Bhatia and Ludwig Aberg were the featured pairing on the Golf TV coverage today. He was getting some very positive comments from the commentators. They noted that his while his stock shot was a lefty cut, he was adept at moving the ball in other ways as well when needed.

Yes, Akshay (and Sahith) are the real deal!

Ludvig Aberg is the latest young star on the men's side who also has a very bright future. The 23-year old Swede (who went to Texas Tech U for college) just turned pro this year (2023) and has only played 16 tournaments that give world ranking points and he is already ranked #79 in the world!

At the Sanderson Farms Championship, Akshay had a ho-hum 2nd round on a day when the field again went low (cut was at -5) and he could only manage an even par round and fell from tied-4th to Tied-41 position at -6. Of the 78 players who made the cut, only 1 person was over-par today! Hope he fares better in the final 2 rounds - he is totally capable of going very low based on his past performances, so that is something to look out for.

At the PGA Champions Tour event, Vijay Singh had a good 1st round of -3 and is tied-11th (leader is at -8) in the 78-player field consisting of several "Who's Who" of yesteryears including former world #1s Ernie Els and David Duval in addition to Vijay. Arjun birdied his last hole to finish at even-par and is tied-44th.

Another disappointing even-par 3rd round from Akshay and he slips an additional 9 spots to tied-50th at -6. The leader is at -20, so all he can aim for in the final round on Sunday is to improve his position as much as he can to go higher in the FedEx cup rankings, and gain some valuable world ranking points.

I saw another Indian name come up for this week's PGA Tour's Shriners Children Open tournament.

Vijay Srinivasan of USA Monday qualified into the tournament. Here is an interesting article about him: https://www.pgatour.com/article/news/mo ... -summerlin

So now we have Akshay, Aaron and Vijay S. competing at this tournament.

:Offtopic: Speaking of Vijay Srinivasan, if we just go by his first name, it not only means victory, but it bodes well for him that there have been some great sportspeople by that name too! Vijay Singh in golf and Vijay Amritraj in Tennis to name a couple. Even film star Amitabh Bachchan's name in many Hindi movies was Vijay :) And speaking of Amitabh, it brings me a smile when I think of his comedic monologues in the Hindi movie Namak Halaal referencing Indian test cricketers Vijay Merchant and Vijay Hazare. Here is a quote published in IMDb: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084385/ch ... /nm0000821
OK, enough of my monologue about "Vijay" :)

Looks like Vijay (Srinivasan) will not be "Vijayee" (victorious) in this tournament :) In fact he was tied for dead last after the 1st round at +10, and is still last with 9 holes to go in his 2nd round. But he at least got a taste for playing on the PGA Tour with the big guys!

Akshay and Aaron are having an ordinary tournament so far. They are both at -4 as I type and cut line is projected to be at -2, so right now they both have a 2 shots cushion after playing 14 and 16 holes respectively. The leaders are at -12.

Akshay and Aaron both made the cut, and after 3 rounds they are both at -7 (Tied 42nd). The leaders are 8 shots better at -15.
