Daniel is the first alternate now and hence has a great chance of making the field for the last Major of 2007.
Jyoti was first alternate at British open.....

So we will have Jeev, Jyoti, VJ & hopefully Daniel in the playing field.

Tiger Woods came to Tulsa on Tuesday to play a practice round at the Southern Hills Country Club to get a feel of the golf course that has been laid out for the PGA Championship.  He left for Akron in the afternoon after playing a round in the morning.  Phil Mickelson also came for a day to get in some practice.

Daniel Chopra remains one spot away from making the field of PGA Championship.  Jeev will be reaching Tulsa on Monday night to compete at the PGA Championship.

Let's hope Daniel gets in and completes the Indian threesome (Jeev, Jyoti and Daniel) at the PGA championships -- plus the NRI Vijay Singh. Indian golf has really come a long way. If only Arjun Atwal would regain his form soon...

Jeev has started well as he is even par after 13 holes. He has two bogeys and two birdies in his round so far. The joint leaders including Tiger are at -2.
Update: Jeev bogeyed the par 3 5th hole :( and now he is T21

World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational - Round One

Post by BSharma »

Jeev Milkha Singh did reasonably well to finish his round at two-over-par 72 and currently is tied for 36th place out of 83 golfers.  There are no cuts at this tournament and hence he gets to play all four rounds to consolidate his position on the next three days.

Meanwhile Vijay Singh opened with two birdies in the first five holes, but his game started going south after the 7th hole.  He made bogeys on 8th and 13th holes and double bogeys on the 12th and 14th holes, which has left him at four-over-par after 14 holes.

Tiger Woods and Mark Calcacecchia are tied for second place at two-under-par 68 and Hunter Mahan is the current clubhouse leader after carding 67.  The Oklahoma State University alumnus has been hot since June and has one win and three other top ten finish in his last four starts.  Watch out for Hunter Mahan at PGA Championship this year at Southern Hills, a golf course he should be familiar with, ever since he played collegiate golf only an hour away.

Daniel Chopra has made the field of the PGA Championship.  woohoo  He was the first alternate and got the nod from the PGA Championship officials when Paul Azinger withdrew from the tournament.

While Vijay Singh continued to struggle at World Golf Championships – Bridgestone Invitational with his three day total of eleven-over-par 221, Jeev Milkha Singh continues to stay in the upper half of the list of golfers.  With rounds of 72, 74 and 72, he is at eight-over-par 218 and tied for 34th place.

Rory Sabbatini leads the group of 83 golfers with a three round score of 206 and Tiger is one stroke behind at 207 going into the last round on Sunday.

Jeev has played in 11 PGA tournaments this year and he appears to thrive on the difficult golf courses.  He finished 33rd and 28th at the two previous World Golf Championships this year and ended up tied for 37th and 36th places at The Masters and US Open respectively.  He missed five cuts and placed 78th at Shell Houston Open.

Does it mean that he will do well at next week’s PGA Championship?  I hope so.

I believe that Jeev's good performance on tough courses may have something to do with his JPGA experience. The courses there play really tough and very few players come up with sub-par scores. I guess Jeev doesn't get fazed by a +8 thru three rounds.

What has happened to Olazabal and Allenby in this tournament?  Their scores are unbelievable (+30 and +25 as of this writing).  I'm glad we didn't have our contest using this tournament this week.  Tiger haters and Olazabal/Allenby lovers would have been scratching their heads.

It's pretty amazing how Tiger manages to end up winning almost every tournament, even if others dominate the first 2 or 3 rounds! Sabatini must be tearing his hair out, as Tiger swept to victory again. Jeev had a poor final round to slide down to T51.

Tiger Woods versus Southern Hills

Tiger Woods decimated the field at the World Golf Championship-Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio on last Sunday and sent a subtle message to his opponents that they may be playing for second place at the PGA Championship.  The talk in Tulsa is not about Tiger versus Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, Jeev Milkha Singh, Sergio Garcia, Jim Furyk, Luke Donald, or local boy Bo Van Pelt, but about his match-up with Southern Hills Country Club golf course, the site of 2007 PGA Championship.

Tiger has conquered all types of golf courses and in all types of conditions.  He has beaten the best golfers all over the world and is closing on Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major championship victories.  No one doubts that Tiger will one day have a better record than Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.  So what does Tiger share with his two famous predecessors?  None of them have beaten Southern Hills CC golf course.

Tiger’s introduction with Southern Hills golf course began in 1996 when the much-heralded PGA Tour rookie came to Tulsa to play in the PGA Tour Championship and finished tied for 21st in a field of 30 golfers.  He returned to Tulsa in 2001 after having won the previous four majors - Tiger Slam, as he called it - to compete at the US Open and try to win all four majors in a single year.  His opening round of 74 at Southern Hills was too much of a deficit to overcome and despite his spectacular plays on the next three days, Retief Goosen won the title.  Similarly Nicklaus found Southern Hills difficult to conquer at the 1958 and 1977 US Open and the PGA Championships in 1970, 1982 and 1994.

Tiger does not want to go 0 and 3 against Southern Hills.  He played a practice round in Tulsa on Monday last week before the WGC in Akron, Ohio and barely 18 hours after winning the title on Sunday, he was back at Southern Hills at 6:20 a.m. Monday morning to practice for four hours.

There are billboards all over Tulsa that read “Tiger vs Southern Hills”.  No one in Tulsa is betting against Tiger this time.
