Daniel Chopra

Post by BSharma »

Well I caved in and decided that it is time to have a "Daniel Chopra" thread.  We have been following him for sometime in Jeev Milkha Singh's thread because both of them were playing in the same tournaments.  Daniel's name appears in the field for the next Nationwide tournament - 2003 Albertsons Boise Open (starting this week) but Jeev is not playing in Boise.

Daniel's bio has been mentioned in Jeev Milkha Singh's thread also but since we are starting a new thread for him, I am summarising that information.

Daniel's father is Indian and his mother is Swedish.  He was born in 1973 and turned pro in 1992.  He moved to India at age 7 and was raised by his grandparents, and apparently speaks Hindi fluently.  He won the All-India Junior Golf Championship at the age of 14 and won two more Indian Junior titles plus the Doug Sanders World Junior title.

He ranks 19th on the Nationwide Money Leader list this week (he was ranked 17th last week but did not play last week also).  The top 20 golfers from the Nationwide Tour get PGA Tour Cards for the next year.  There is a good chance that Daniel may play in the PGA-USA next year.

Ajay has been following the golf forum very closely and regularly updates it with the latest scores.   :D

Daniel Chopra - PGA Tour

Post by ajay »

Thanks Bhushan for starting a thread on Daniel. Here is the link to follow Daniel's earlier exploits in Jeev's thread.

Daniel needs at least one more top 5 finish to make it to PGA. Right now he is on the bubble. Let us watch how this tournament turns out. He finished first day at even paar

Daniel will have to crank up his game a notch or two to finish in the top 20 on the money leaderboard. There are only five more tournaments left after the Boise Open before the Nationwide Tour Championship.

He had a double bogey and an eagle today! Cut out the bogeys and double bogeys the rest of the way. Boise Open has one of the larger purses and a good showing will pay higher dividends.

Looks like, Daniel did listen to us. With a card of -5 today, he is in the running for a high spot in the tournament. :)
He had only one bogey against six birdies. Well done Daniel!!
Lets hope he keeps same form over the weekend.

Way to go, Daniel! Win one of the remaining tournaments and you will be home free and playing on the PGA Tour next year.

Ajay, one of the remaining tournaments on the Nationwide Tour is in Texas. May be Daniel will listen to us and win in Texas. :D

I didn't realize that. It would be great if he wins in Texas :)

Ok, the TX tournament is in the desert (Midland/Odessa). (A golf course in desset?!! It's too far from here, almost like another state.

Daniel had the second best round (66) of the day and is now tied for 9th place. He was tied for 57th place at the end of the first day. His tee time is 12:35 pm (local time in Boise, Idaho) and his playing partner will be Jason Bohn. Jason is ranked 7th on the money leader list.

Ajay, many people do not realize that the distance from the north-east part of Texas to the south-west part is over 800 miles! I used to live in Texas until I moved north of the Red River. Jay is an ex-Texan also, although a longhorn. I guess there is still comradre amongst the "aggie", "longhorn" and "sooners" at this website.

After playing brilliantly yesterday Daniel faltered today with a round of 75 (4 over par). He has dropped from 9th to 43rd place. He had a triple bogey today on the 12th hole :( . He needs another great day tomorrow to finish high in the money list.

On the last day Daniel had better result with a score of 68 (four birdies and one bogey). He has moved up but there are some players still on the course, and we will know his final placing later in the day.

T24 finishand a paycheck of $5000 was not good enough as he slipped from 19th spot in moneylist to 21st. Three more people are very closely following him (with in $3000). Daniel need $12000 just to catch up the person on the 20th spot. Daniel badly needs a top 5 finish soon. The triple bogey on the third day proved to be very costly.

On a par 71 course Daniel shot a one under par 70 and is tied for 58th spot at the end of the first day. The leader is at minus 6.

Come on Daniel, it is time to get some birdies and move up the leader board.

Daniel had a great day today - 6 birdies and 1 bogey - to shoot a round of 66! He is now at minus 6 for two days and the projected cut is at minus 2. Several players are still on the golf course and we will know his final standing of the day later.

Update:

Daniel moved up from 58th place to 10th spot on the second day. Go Daniel!!!

Daniel Chopra - PGA Tour

Well done Daniel, keep it up!!

But this is only half job done, two more days to go. As I mentioned earlier, Daniel needs around 12K to catch up with Tjaart van der Walt at 20th spot in the money list. Since Tjaart is not playing here, it is possible for Daniel to come back in top 20.

But there are few other players that Daniel has to watch out. One is Chris Tidland who is placed 3rd in this tournament andother is Jason Dufner who is T4. If any of them comes in top 3, they can also enter top 20 list, making it more competitve and that much difficult for Daniel.

I feel the contest is still open for last six spots as the players lying in 15th to 20th position are in the range of $148 - 160K. Right now one can easily identify two groups of golfers: the six golfers (in top 20) ranging from 148K to 160K, and another six golfers ($126-136K) that Daniel is leading. Daniel needs to distance himself from the later group and join the first group. Good news is that only one of the six player from the first group, Kyle Thompson, and two players from thr later group, Daniel along with Jason Dufner are left in the money round. So Daniel (as well as Jason Dufner) has a chance to catch up with the first group if he makes around $15-20K money in this tournament. But for that he need to finish in top 6-7 position. Any thing better is always welcome. But even if he makes $ 10K, he can at least close the gap and distance himself from the later group. So this is the equation right now. Things will change as still few tournaments are there. Let us watch how all this unfolds.

Daniel had a bogey free round of 67 (-4) today and it has propelled him to a tie for 3rd place although some of the golfers are still on the course and his position may change later on.

I agree with Ajay that the leaderboard (between 10th and 30th place) is very fluid and it can change dramatically with a few tournaments left on the schedule. A tournament victory can move a player several places on the money leader. I have a gut feeling that Daniel is going to win in Texas, and I hope he wins in California also tomorrow.

Go Daniel and play a bogey free round tomorrow and shoot a few birdies on the way.
