Anirban Lahiri finished T30 at the (British) Open championships this year, his best performance in a Major (slightly better than his previous-best T31 at the 2012 Open). Anirban has played all four Majors, although he has only made the mid-tournament cut at two (the big ones, Masters and the Open). That he has done all this in his 20s (he is still only 28) means that he could yet become India's first contender at a Major. Arjun Atwal and Jeev Milkha Singh "made" it to the Majors and the big tours (PGA and EPGA respectively) when they were quite a bit older, in their 30s.
And, of course, Anirban has won TWO tournaments on the EPGA tour this year -- albeit both in Asia(!), the Maybank Malaysian Open, and the Hero Indian Open (both in February 2015).

To cap his breakthrough year, Anirban Lahiri finished T5 (with just one other player, Brooks Koepka) at the 2015 PGA Championships (where he made the cut for the first time too!). With scores of 70-67-70-68, Anirban played superbly throughout this Major, and thoroughly deserved his top-5 finish, which is easily the best performance by an Indian at a major golf championship. It caps a year in which he has finished T49 at the Masters and T30 at the British Open.

He is also certain to be picked for the President's Cup team. He is also likely to finish in the top 50 which will guarantee participation in the majors next years as well.
A big win in either the Europe or the US and he will already be India's best ever golfer. He is also back up to 38th in the world.

Also noticed that Anirban is back to being Asia's #1 ranked golfer. Japanese Matsuyama is ahead but Japan is counted separately.

It has been a barren couple of years for our players not named Anirban Lahiri. Shiv/SSP/Gagan have not had good results -- Gagan was out with an injury. Let us hope that Anirban inspires them to do better.

Arjun Atwal won a title on tha PGA tour and one more title on the European tour(Dubai). SSP won one on the European tour. So not barren.

Atwal's PGA tour win came 5 years ago. The golf rankings reflect the results of the last 2 years.

Phenomenal achievement by Anirban to finish T5.
Hats off to a solid week of golf and it should give him the confidence to do well in Majors and PGA events.
Anirban could have got his PGA tour card for 2016 with a top 3 finish, which he was so close.
I was expecting to see him get an invite this week at Wyndham as he finished top 5 the previous week...but he is not in the entry list. That would have given him one last chance as it's the last event - but not to be. He is 5th in the Non Members earnings now and I think the top 3 get cards??
Anirban is the entry list in the European Tour events from next week onwards after a week's rest this week. He is 7th in ranking for the Presidents Cup, which he should now qualify and that's a first for an Indian.

Amazing achievement ... Like the way he recovered in the last round at 10 hole he needed 3 shots from 6-7 feet ... Instead of going down he stood tall and remained on four under for the day.

Re: Anirban Lahiri - PB WR #33 (28-Mar-15), India #1
Anirban has decided to play the Web.com Tour finals starting on 10th September to try and get PGA card for 2016.
He has withdrawn from the European Tour events and will play for 4 weeks in the web.com Tour.
So he will few big events in Europe in pursuit of PGA card - hope he finished Top 25 to secure his card.
Looks like he is taking 3 weeks off now....could have come over to Europe and played 1-2 events...

Congratulations to Anirban on such a wonderful performance in a Major. Top 5 for the first time ever by an Indian player in a Golf major!!
The grind of PGA tour can wait another year... If he is more focused on winning a major (or other PGA events) as a PGA outsider and have enough breaks between majors, I think that would be better....

I think trying out web.com tour is a great move. One win, which would be worth $180K in four tournaments can put him in top 25 and earn a PGA card. He surely has the potential to do that.
