The reason for this point system is to fuse classical game points with rapid games point to determine overall tournament winner. The rapid games being weighted at half of classical games,

Congratulations to Vishy on a nice recovery from his disastrous showing in the last tournament.

Yeah, what is the world coming to? If rational numbers are a problem, what does one do with irrational numbers? Should one legislate that Pi=3?. ;-)

LOL! Well my opinion is that that the world is still OK and coexist harmoniously with irrational numbers, however, the bigger problem is what do you do with irrational people? ;)
Anyway, the chess world will be back in order today itself with fractions back in rapid games. The rapid games score will be added to the existing tally from classical games to determine the overall tournament winner.

And Nihal Sarin with his first GM norm

He will likely be the second fastest to reach GM status.

Thanks Sin Hombre for posting info about the young Nihal Sarin. He looks to be amazing talent, who we likely are going to follow for many years.

Still haven't seen more about this.

Quick perusal of fide norms makes me think that Nihal missed out by half a point.

Pragga missed out on a GM norm by half a point again after a loss to 2660 rated Venezuelan GM in the last round. His rise in ELO continues unabated though and he is now past 2500 (on his 12th birthday).

Nihal will have another attempt at 2500 and the second GM norm in Abu Dhabi in the coming weeks.

I saw this comment on chessbase and I have to agree with it

There is too much unnecessary pressure on this highly gifted kid to achieve the youngest GM title. He is World Champion material.
Over the past 1 year, he has played several tournaments with good performances but also made mistakes preventing him from earning the GM norms. Vlissingen is no different except his energy levels ran out in the last round; also his quick draws with white in some earlier rounds did not make sense? IMO, his play is not yet consistent against 2600+ players.
At his so young age, he needs a more qualified coach to guide and raise his playing level.

12-year Pragga with the best win of his career beating England #1 Howell with an elo rating of 2701.

He has started well in the isle of man tournament as well; let's see if he can maintain the level, something which he struggled to in recent tournaments.
