Chess: World Team Championship 2022, Jerusalem

Basically a froum to cover chess now that we seem to have sufficient interest in the game.

This is not a relevant tournament, despite the name. No top-10 player.

You mean we just lost to a couple of small countries (Uzbekistan and Spain?) even in an irrelevant tournament without a top-10 player? Were we missing our top-10 players?

(I don't follow chess either, like cricket, though it doesn't seem as irrelevant as cricket in the world. Regardless, I often feel that no tournament is ever irrelevant for India in sports and games, knowing our history of not being good at anything much. No tournament is irrelevant, even in irrelevant sports like cricket :) )

I follow chess..... Uzbekistan players are strong. They are not in top 20 because they don't play much international tournaments, most of time they play in Russia and Former Soviet states.....They were winner of chess Olympiad, 2022 Chennai.....We miss our top players, VD is the only top 25 player in our team...Nihal is around ranking 70, other twos in 90..

Here is a guaranteed way to avoid sadness, Saffron. As soon as you see an Indian tagged as favorite, expect they will lay an egg. You will not be sad then except just at the beginning when you accept this expectation. It will work in any sport anywhere when Indians are involved. I give you money back guarantee—no questions asked.

If that doesn't work, just look around how Pakistan did. If you see names like Arshad Nadeem or Aisam ul Haq Quereshi as their current best or best ever, just don't worry. Look above in the rankings and you will see some Indian better than them. Then you drink a nice chai and be happy.

We had one player who would qualify for our A-team and one who would qualify for our B-team in the 5-man roster. US had no one who qualify for their A or B squads, and same for China who actually won but whatever.

I think a lot of Indians have gotten into chess and especially following Vidit over the pandemic, and I think Saffron is one of them given they all call him VD. Vidit is not someone I would look towards to drive India to a win, he has always been a bit underwhelming throughout his career.

That said, this is a completely irrelevant tournament. Would find it hard to even place it in the top-25. Even the Asian Games will actually have a stronger field and fought over harder.

For casual followers which is most of this board, these are the only 6 tournaments that matter -

FIDE World Championship - nothing to add here, Anand last won in 2012.
FIDE Candidates - final qualifying tournament to the WC, Anand last won in 2013 and last played in 2013. No other Indian has ever played in this.
FIDE World Rapid and Blitz - Anand last won the Rapid in 2017, where he also won the Bronze in Blitz.
Chess Olympiad - we won a bronze hosting it this time with the young guns playing well. This was our best chance for a gold with Russia and China not participating.
FIDE Chess World Cup - Anand last won this in 2002. Vidit got to the quarters in the last edition in 2021.
Wijk an Zee sponsored by Tata these days - the so-called Wimbledon of chess. Anand last won in 2006. Our top 3 young guns in Gukesh, Arjun and Pragg are participating in the next edition in Jan.

Now adding some more modern tournaments which are gaining importance including online ones

Norway chess - invitational, becoming big because of Magnus
Sinquefield cup - invitational, Rex / St Louis supported
^ the above 2 tournaments are part of the Grand Chess tour
Speed chess championship - #1 tournament online ; Nihal reached the semifinals last year and this is ongoing right now!
C24 Champions chess tour - also online but who knows if this will last with C24 being bought by chess.com

Thanks for the roundup and update, Sin Hombre. Now I realize that we are no good in chess either. Okay, need to look for how Pakistan has been doing :)

Based on the top 10 player rankings per country, India is 4th in the world behind Russia, US, and China in a “sport” that has well over a hundred countries participating with locally born players. That is arguably the best ranking for us in any sport.

^^^Yet we don’t win much of anything commendable. Even in depleted fields or at home tournaments although there may not be much of a home turf advantage in chess. Not sure if that is an indictment of the rankings or a cruel irony. What’s your thinking, Arjun?

If you bring women's chess into the mix Humpy and Harika have been regulars at the World Championships. Humpy has been a runner up and Harika has been a semi finalist. Humpy has also won the World Rapid Chess Championship. However in the men's section the gap between Anand and the rest has been huge.
