Chess World Cup 2021

Basically a froum to cover chess now that we seem to have sufficient interest in the game.

Chess World Cup 2021

Post by Sin Hombre »

This one has started better than the one in 2019. There is also a women's world cup happening in parallel.

R1

Gukesh 2.5 - 1.5 Teclaf
Iniyan 1.5 - 0.5 Bogner
Vidit (#13) bye
Adhiban 2 - 0 Chipanga
Aravindh 2 - 0 Concio
Nihal 1.5 - 0.5 Ssegwanyi
Hari (#11) bye
Praggna 1.5 - 0.5 Bersamina

All 8 qualified to Round 2

R2

Gukesh 1 - 1 Dubov (#17) (tiebreaks are tomorrow)
Iniyan 0 - 2 Tomashevsky (#21)
Vidit (#13) 1 - 1 Fier (tiebreaks)
Adhiban 2 - 0 Delgado
Aravindh 0.5 - 1.5 Abdusattorov
Nihal 1.5 - 0.5 Sjugirov
Hari (#11) 1.5 - 0.5 Quesada
Praggna 2 - 0 Sargissian

We have 4 qualifiers to Round 3, and 2 play a tiebreak.

If Vidit wins his tiebreak, he plays Adhiban next which would guarantee at least one Round 4 entrant. Note that both Vidit and Hari are seeded to get to R5.

R2 tiebreaks - Vidit won 1.5-0.5 and Gukesh lost 0.5-1.5

R3

Vidit (#13) 1 - 0 Adhiban
Nihal 0 - 1 Andreikin (#14)
Hari (#11) 1 - 0 Lupulescu
Praggna 1 - 0 Krasenkow

Will be very tough for Nihal to win with black tomorrow to force a tiebreak; hopefully Hari and Praggna will comfortably advance to R4.

R3

Vidit (#13) 4.5 - 3.5 Adhiban
Nihal 0.5 - 1.5 Andreikin (#14)
Hari (#11) 1.5 - 0.5 Lupulescu
Praggna 3 - 1 Krasenkow

I am going to jinx this but this is Hari's best chance to get to the Candidates with him being the highest remaining seed left in his quarter, and if seedings hold, will reach the semis.

As I feared, Hari lost his first match against the Iranian youngster and now needs to win on demand with white tomorrow.

Vidit won with black but is a bit of a choker so wouldn't surprise me if he went defensive tomorrow with white and struggle.

Praggna drew with white against MVL. Tomorrow will be a tough day for the 15-year old prodigy.

Vidit wins again and is now ranked above Hari in the live world rankings.

Hari tried hard against his lower rated Iranian opponent, but could not win today. Disappointing end.

Praggu lost as expected, but great job in getting the first game draw against such a strong opponent.

Vidit reaching the quarters is the only positive news for this week. It at least ensures qualification in the FIDE Grand Prix for 2022.

If he can somehow reach the finals, he will become the second Indian ever to qualify for the candidates but unlikely given our sporting fortunes.

Vidit was unlucky to lose in an equal endgame. But a QF was a good achievement and he gained rating points.

If young Praggu and Sarin both cross 2700 before the next 2022 Olympiad, we will have a crazy strong team. No-one below 2700.

There is no men's chess.

There is open chess for both men and women (and one lady in Judit Polgar got to the top 10) and women's section sections.
