Good to see someone started this thread. I thought about it but I've been too lazy. Thanks Suresh!

Yeah! A good surprise start from Padmini Rout. She is in last 16 now. But life doesn't get any easy now. She vanquished one Chinese, but here comes another. And if she does manage to upset this one, another Chinese, in fact #1 seed Wenjun Ju, is lurking around the corner.
I think Padmini is playing without fear, without any weight of expectation, and that has really helped her so far. Goodluck in 3rd round.

On the other hand, Harika has identical result, two wins in tie-break, but she was expected to win these easily. Its worth recalling that in last two knockout format women's world championship (2012, 2015), Harika reached the semi-final rounds.
Hopefully, she has warmed up and her display will only become better.

Game 1 of R3 ends in draw for both our players. Both Harika and Padmini play Game 2 with white pieces.

This time games extended to second tie-breaker for both Harika and Padmini. Unfortunately, Padmini (2½-3½) could not pull another upset while Harika (3½ - 2½) once again made it to the 4th round.

Although Padmini took the 1st tie-break game, but couldn't hold on in second and lost and moved to the next rapid tie-break. This time she lost the first game and drew the next. Harika, after four drawn games, finally one in the 5th and drew the 6th.

All the top 4 seeds are in Quarters. Here is the draw for the remaining 8 players.

Ju Wenjun (1)
China Tan Zhongyi (9)

Harika Dronavalli (4)
Georgia (country) Nana Dzagnidze (5)

Anna Muzychuk (2)
Bulgaria Antoaneta Stefanova (7)

Alexandra Kosteniuk (3)
China Ni Shiqun (38)

It is a pity that Padmini couldn't hold on to the win in the tie-break game. She must have gained a ton of rating points in this tournament but might not be adding to the GM norm that she earned last year. Hope Harika's game picks up in the QF as she is playing the 5th seed. Three Chinese in the QF with one guaranteed place in the SF. Of course, the top-ranked woman is Chinese (Hou Yifan).

A lot of top ranked players are not competing.

Hou Yifan because of protest against FIDE, a lot of others because this is being held in Iran and everyone is being forced to wear a hijab/headscarf. Humpy never confirmed the reason but likely the latter.

But, Humpy was going in November. This article says that she was "not considering it suitable to play in Tehran". Did not say explicitly why. But, I would guess because of the hijab rules. She did go to Iran before and did get used to the hijab she had said. See here. So, although it seems that was the reason, neither article confirms that fully.

Finally, Harika wins in a regular game. Hopefully she gets at least a draw to win the match too in regular games. Go Harika!

Four rounds and four tie-breakers! Anyway, once again she is in Semis! Now a milestone round as she tries to become second Indian after Humpy to reach finals. The top seed Chinese Ju Wenjun is out as she was beaten by other Chinese Zhongyi in quarters, who incidentally also stopped the run of Padmini in the 3rd round. So if Harika wins, she also takes a revenge for Padmini :D . Rating wise Harika is favorite going into semi-finals. The other semifinal is between the second seed Anna Muzychuk (2558) and third seed Alexandra Kosteniuk (2549).

ps: Humpy lost to Yifan when they played a 10 game championship match in 2011. The match was over in the 8th round with score 5.5-2.5. Earlier, Humpy was twice stopped by Yifan in semi-finals of 2008 and 2010.
