Vidit Santosh Gujrathi
Congratulations Vidit for breaking into top 50 of the live world chess ranking at WR#47. With his 3rd victory in 3rd round at ongoing Isle of Man Open tournament, Vidit's live ELO ratings entered in the 2690s at 2693.2. Another coveted landmark of 2700 is in sight. For a while it looked Adhiban will be the next Indian to join Anand and Harikrishna in top 50 when he reached as high as 52, but he stalled and slipped a little while Vidit continued his good form from recently held Chess Olympiad and overtook Adhiban to become Indian #3.
Vidit who will be celebrating his 22nd birthday later this month (Oct 24th), became GM at age 18 years and 3 months in January 2013. In 2013 and 2014 World Junior Championships, Vidit came 3rd ( winner Yu Yangyi is already a top player) and 5th. In 2013 Sethuraman (5th) and 2014 Murali Karthikeyan(5th) were other Indian juniors who did well.

Seems like Vidit is the 4th Indian to reach top 50. After Anand, Sasikiran was probably the second Indian to make it to top 50 and he was ranked as high as 26th in May 2012. Later Harikrishna joined the club and made it to top 10 just few days back.

@ajay, thanks for creating the thread...
I was thinking of doing it yesterday, after his 3rd round win at IOM ...
Also, on Adhiban - he had a better live rating of 2693.4, than what Vidit has right now, after the R1 win of the Spanish Div 1 League... and might have touched Top-50 then...

Prashanthm, it may be very well true that Adhiban cracked Top 50 earlier. I hope he makes a comeback to top 50 soon.

Re: Vidit Santosh Gujrathi WR#47 Oct 2016
Vidit lost to Shirov on the top board in R4, won against Lalith in R5...
Had a very adventurous ride in R6 against Max Illingworth, where he gambled a couple of pawns for an all out king side attack and eventually came out on top in the end and is current joint 2nd with 5 points after 6 rounds...
He will play against the leader Eljanov on the top board in R7...
Vidit is currently at #48, albeit at a higher personal best of 2693.9...
A win today will gain him 5.8 ELO, taking him within half-an-ELO to 2700....

Vidit lost to Eljanov Pavel. Eljanov (2754.8) is a top 20 player and playing great in this tournament, keeping the likes of Caruana, Nakamura and Wesley So behind. With this 2nd loss of the tournament (5 victories), Vidit falls from tied 2nd spot to 4th spot tied (in points) with 12 other players including two more Indians, Harika and Sunilduth and also Hikaru Nakamura.
Today Harika had a great victory over world #1 women player Hou Yifan. This is the first victory of Harika over Yifan. Harika has just lost one match in this tournament so far, and two draws. The 18 yr old junior Sunilduth is having his best tournament losing only once to World #2 Caruana. He also has two draws
Here is the current status of the top players in the tournament after 7 rounds (with two rounds to go)

Re: Vidit Santosh Gujrathi WR#47 Oct 2016
Yes, painful loss for Vidit today, especially with white pieces...
He played some sub-optimal moves in time scramble going into the first time control and could not stage a comeback...
Down to 2689.7 now... and at #52... in the live rating list...
Up against David Howell in the penultimate round...

Re: Vidit Santosh Gujrathi WR#47 Oct 2016
Vidit is again close to the magical 2700 mark with a live ELO rating of 2691.5 after a 3rd place at the Asian chess championships, which also guarantees a spot at the chess world cup.
Others from that generation like Adhiban continue to flounder. Aravindh Chithambaram looks to be the next hope for hitting 2700.

Re: Vidit Santosh Gujrathi WR#47 Oct 2016
Vidit finally breaks 2700. Live rank of #41 if someone wants to update the thread title.
India number three GM Vidit Gujrathi had been knocking on the doors of 2700 for quite some time now. He finally achieved that milestone at the Spanish Team Championship 2017 in Linares. Vidit played for board one of Team Solvay and scored 4.5/7 against some super strong opponents. He gained 8.7 Elo points and reach 2701.7 on the live rating lists. As he won't be playing any events in August, his published rating on 1st September will be 2702. He is the fourth Indian after Anand, Sasikiran and Harikrishna to achieve this coveted feat of crossing 2700 Elo.

Congratulations Vidit for joining 2700 club. He is 22 and currently the 3rd youngest in this club behind 18 yr old Wei Yi ( Live Rating 17) and 22 yr old Fedoseev ( Live Rating 28 - who is around 4 months younger). But there are also couple of 19 yr olds (Duda who just fell out of 2700, & Artemiev) very close to him in ratings.

Vidit in to the third round of World Cup Knockout after beating Le Quang Liem in 2nd round. He moves to a new high with his live rating #36 and ELO points 2710.6.
He may likely play #12 Ding Liren(2766.4) in the third round
Update: Vidit drew the two classical games but lost in tie-breaker. He got two more rating points for the draw, moving him to career high #34 with PB ELO points 2712.6
