It would be a huge upset if Karjakin holds on.

Carlsen equalizes in 10th round. Wow! Can't get any more exciting with only two rounds left for this championship.

Carlsen escaped in 9th round when Karjakin failed to take advantage of a blunder by Carlsen in time pressure by missing 39.Qb3. And in 10th Karjakin had a chance to draw by repetition on move 20th but chose not to draw and got punished by Carlsen.

No fireworks in 11th and the World Championship is into the last game. Carlsen has white and he is going to press for a win and avoid tie-breaker.

Tie-breaks will start on Wednesday 2 pm - we can expect up to 15 games, the last one being the famous Armageddon or Sudden-Death blitz game. Carlsen plays black first.

Rapid

First, the players start with a match consisting of four rapid games (25 min + 10 sec/move) - Karjakin will have the white pieces in the 1st game. If the score is level after these four games, we enter the 2nd stage.

Blitz

This consists of a two-game-blitz-match (5 min + 3 sec/move), which will in case of a level score be repeated for four time. So in total this could sum up to ten blitz games.

Armageddon

If the score is level after the 2nd stage, an Armageddon game will be played. This format guarantess a winner, as in case of a draw the player with the black pieces will be declared as the winner. In this format, white has five minutes, black only four. An increment of three seconds is given from move 61.

Carlsen was seen an unstoppable and the greatest chess player of all time, etc, but he looks to be on the verge of being knocked off his perch by Karjakin (who finished second to Anand in the candidates tournament in 2014). Good for chess to have this kind of rapid turnover. Apparently, blitz is Karajakin's greatest strength, so the pressure is on Carlsen to finish it at the first stage.

Game starts soon and I am cheering for Karjakin!

At least they have a tiebreaker these days. Remember when a tie would result in the current world champion retaining his crown automatically!?

First rapid game is a draw. I'm cheering for Karjakin too. I guess most of the Indians must be cheering for Karjakin.

Followed by a win to Carlsen in 3rd game and now Karjakin has to win Game 4 (with black pieces) to tie this championship match!

Magnus won the last tie-break game too, to take the tie-break 3-1 and retain the title.

I am honestly surprised that Karjakin got this close, kudos to him for the way he played the regular 12 games. I hope Caruana gets the next challenge - I see him as the biggest threat to Carlsen.

I'm not surprised by Karjakin at all. He has the distinction of being the youngest EVER grandmaster at the age of 12. In fact sometime back during a discussion in this forum I did include Karjakin in my list of players who can challenge Carlsen.

He is just 26 and more than half of his age, he has been a GM.

And, Karjakin's highest ever live rating is 2799.9 after that 8th game win and 9th game draw before he lost the 10th game...
Will he shake this off and make another move towards 2800? :goodluck:

Currently at #5 with 2798.2...
