World Chess Olympiad/ World Team Chess

Basically a froum to cover chess now that we seem to have sufficient interest in the game.

van Wely took the draw by threefold repetition. He clearly didn't fancy playing Vidit. It was defensive positioning from the start for black.

The US will be very tough. Caruana has taken 4/5 points so far, and the US should start as heavy favorite on boards 1-3. We should be favorite on board 4 though. Also, Vidit now has something ridiculous like 5.5/6.0 so he is clearly in the form of his life.

Indian women team beat Latvia 2.5-1.5. Wins for Harika and Somya but another loss for Tania. They are not having as good a time as expected especially Harika. She just won her first match today.

So, as per the standing after the 6th round at chess Olympiad , we are at #1 in the open section being the only team with 6 out of 6 wins are #5 in the women with 4 out of 6 wins. This from among 150 nations in men and 140 among women. Whatever happens in the end, this is still a great achievement. Needs to be applauded even though some here do not consider chess as a sport. ;)

India is playing the US now at the top of the table.

Caruana slightly better position than Hari

Adhiban is losing to Nakamura

Vidit & So are equal & to my eye looks very drawish.

Conversely, the site seems to be rating India's chances very high on board 4 if one of our top two boards fight back to a draw.

This could end in a tie.

I have fewer hopes of salvaging anything on the 2nd and 3rd for Adhiban and Vidit against Naka and So resp...

One never knows though.... :goodluck:
Things are going according to my prediction....

I hope to see some fight from Vidit though to save the day for us....
A 2-2 result wouldn't be bad..., but we'll see... :goodluck:

Vidit had a major blunder & has lost, and Sethu seems to have taken himself from a certain win to a loss (how??).

Hari is putting up a good fight though.

Hari couldn't find the most precise moves and ended with a draw against Caru on the top board...

As expected, Adhiban and Vidit lost on the 2nd and 3rd boards..... :-(

So, we already lost the match .5-2.5 :damn:

Sethu looks like being able to salvage a draw in a Q+B ending where he is two pawns down....

On the women's side, Tania lost again... :damn:

Harika drew against a lowly rated Azeri... :damn:

So, trailing .5-1.5

Padmini on the 2nd board is equal and Soumya on the 4th board has winning chances....

Damn, looks like a bad day here after the high of yesterday.

Hari's performance is still very good against high level opposition that he is facing on top board.

Others are a bit inexperienced I think. Playing their first olympiad ?

Yes, Hari known to be a solid player on the circuit...

Vidit's might be his first appearance, but Sethu and Adhiban played the last one.... and Sethu help up quite remarkably on the 2nd board last time around....

Ugh. I don't mind a loss, but two boards were lost on pure blunders. That is frustrating.

Padmini lost and Somya won and we ended with a 1.5 to 2.5 loss. That is a disappointing result considering all our women players are rated higher than their Azeri opponents.
