These are live ratings, got to wait for the quarterly FIDE ratings to confirm the career high or not. It looks like he is though, at a career high in terms of the world ranking.

That ranking area is really crowded and hence the significant jump for +17 rating points!

Yes, he will be in 3 days' time when the Feb list is out...., but not a big jump... He'll ring in at 2712, slightly better than his prev high......

Things have changed a lot in the recent past and the ratings list are now released every month. And the reason for the big jump in ranting points is because of the higher ratings of his opponents. Only 2 people were rated lower than Hari and the performance was better than that giving him a gain of ONLY 6 points...

Losses to Giri was ok, but to bottom rung players such as Rapport & Gelfand really hurt Hari...

You can check it on Hari's FIDE player page

He has around 11 points to gain from the 'Czech League' which will be added to the official points in May...

Ahh.. FIDE releases ratings every month - forgot about that change.

Why is FIDE not including 'Czech League' points?? It is confusing that FIDE folks are not using true ratings at end of a game. Instead they pick and choose. I bet it has something to do with, during what time-frame does that league run (possibly till end of May) and hence they won't update until then?!

That is non-sense. On the one hand they have increased the frequency of releasing Rating lists (now it is monthly, from being bi-monthly, quarterly, etc. in the past); while continuing to exclude certain games - especially the league ones.... How does that truly reflect the ratings of a person??

Yes, since Czech League runs until April, it will not be counted until after that... They also take into consideration the rating of the players at the start of the League, Nov/Dec - 2013... Same case with Bundesliga all other leagues...

For the true ratings, we can always refer to the live ratings.......

Tata Steel (Corus) Chess - 2015

Post by ajay »

Tata Steel Chess tournament 2015 is already coming to close (alas! no Indian this time, but Anish Giri is there :) ). And the youngsters have made big splash. Even Kasparov acknowledged it in his tweets.
Kasparov wrote:New chess generation ascendant. Old guard elite took status for granted, always fatal with hungry young sharks in the talent pool!
Kasparov wrote:Is a young field overall of course, but the top five in Wijk an Zee standings ages with one round to go are 24, 20, 21, 24, 22. Amazing.
Well Kasparov is slightly wrong as World # 2 Caruana(22) is tied 6th (surprisingly) with the veteran Ivanchuk(45) at 7.0 pts. And the top four are :
  • Carlsen (24) 8.5
    Anish Giri (20) 8.0
    Lagrave (24) 7.5
    Wesley So (21) 7.5
And the good news is that among the battle of two youngsters , Anish Giri won an important match against Wesley So today to snatch the sole 2nd place from him. The result also moved Giri to his highest (live) ranking at #5, just beating Anand to #6.
Kasparov wrote:Nice effort by Giri to win key game today at #TataSteelChess vs So. Some compensation for not winning similar endgame vs Ivanchuk!
Watch out Carlsen! Giri is coming right there!

Well Kasparov was talking about Ding(22) and not Caruana(22). So he was right about the top 5 as Ding was also at 7.5 points. And it so happens that Ding, Lagrave and So won in the last round while Giri drew his match, resulting in all four tied at 8.5 behind Carlsen at 9pts.

Code: Select all

1 (24)Carlsen, M. 9.0 / 13
2 (24)Vachier-Lagrave, M. 8.5 / 13
3 (20)Giri, A. 8.5 / 13
4 (21)So, W. 8.5 / 13
5 (22)Ding, L. 8.5 / 13
6 (45)Ivanchuk, V. 7.5 / 13
7 (24)Caruana, F. 7.0 / 13
8 (27)Radjabov, T. 6.0 / 13
9 (28)Wojtaszek, R. 5.5 / 13
10	(32)Aronian, L. 5.5 / 13
11	(20)Hou, Y. 5.0 / 13 Women world champ
12	(24)Saric, I. 4.5 / 13
13	(42)Van Wely, L. 4.0 / 13
14	(31)Jobava, B. 3.0 / 13
