Well done Negi! Only if one of the loss was a win, or, if he escaped with a draw in two of the losses. But any way, this was brilliant performance and bode's well for his future.

Congratulations Parimarjan! What a feat! We all knew of course he was on way to becoming the youngest GM in the country. How long, was always the question.

Congratulations Parimarjan Negi.
For once the Indian news channels (via satellite TV in USA) reported Negi's feat before the print press or Internet based press wrote about it.

BS, could you please elaborate? Which channels reported Negi's feat in the US? Were they Indian channels? If so, were their reports based on Indian/Foreign wire services?BSharma wrote:Congratulations Parimarjan Negi.

I am yet to come across a TV channel in India which reports sports news ahead of the wire agencies (PTI/UNI/AFP/AP/Reuters).
Thus, interested in this bit of news for academic purposes. (Of course, TV channels are always ahead of the newspapers in the sence they report then and there while papers can come out only next day)

Thanks, Jaydeep. Yeah, that report from Hindu was a bit misleading . Perhaps what it meant that he is currently the youngest grand master. ( since Karakajin & Carlseen are now older then him).
Nonetheless , commendable feat & hopefully we have another Anand in the making.

There is a discrepancy in the age credited to Magnus Carlsen when he became GM (gained his last GM norm). And thus the list (probably based on an original list on chessbase.com) is wrong.
Magnus Carlsen was born 30 Nov, 1990. He became GM on 26 April, 2004.
Parimarjan Negi was born 9 Feb 1993. He became GM on July 1, 2006.

Yes Mugu, u r right ... I m also confused, how they calculate age ... Bcoz if we calculated with given data it comes to "13-yrs, 4-m, 27-d" ... That means Negi bettered his record to become 2nd youngest GM in history of Chess.
And I searched on Wikipedia, and they r bingo on this age calculation ... Which is dispalying wrong on chessbase.com.
Magnus Carlsen - From Wikipedia
So Negi indeed 2nd youngest GM in history of chess ...
Jaydeep.
PS. Sameer, I was talking from the list of chessbase.com ... Hindu was right in declaring Negi 2nd yongest GM.

The record never crossed my mind: Negi - Interview with Rakesh Rao of Hindu.

Negi and Barua are in Hogeschool Zeeland International Chess Tournament in Netherlands.
After round 6 of 9, Negi (14th seed here) is jointly leading with whopping 5.5 points!!
Divyendu Barua drew his 6th round game and is 0.5 points behind the leaders.
Other three joint leaders are the 2nd seed Michal Krasenkow of Poland, 4th seed GM Friso Nijboer from Holland and 5th seed GM Vyacheslav Ikonnikov of Russia.

Negi is playing in the Young stars of the World 2007 at Kirishi.
http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3874
After the ninth round he seems to be jointly in lead with
Ian Nepomniachtchi (the sensation at the last Corus C group) and Andrisian Zaven.
They all have 6/9 score now with two more rounds to go.
http://www.somovs-memorial.ru/table_eng.html
Negi lost to Nepomniachtchi in an earlier game.
http://sify.com/news/fullstory.php?id=14457306
Negi needs to figure this guy out. His record against this Russian phenom, a 16-17yr old IM with the rating of 2602, is 3 losses and one draw so far.
The ninth round saw Nepomnichtchi lose letting the others catch up with him.
The "official" English coverage site seems to be pretty useless.
http://www.bs-chess.com/latin/english.html
Most of the above are inferences from a website mostly in Russian.
