Viswanathan Anand - World Champ for 8 Years.

Basically a froum to cover chess now that we seem to have sufficient interest in the game.

To add to Kujo's excellent points above - Carlsen's greatest strength is that he is very non-textbook compared to the generation around him (particularly all the Russian players). He excels at positions that are beyond and/or outside the norms, on both imaginative & calculative dimensions. Conversely, opening theory isn't what he really excels at. I think Anand will indeed prepare some more complex opening lines as Kujo suggests, but with the advantage of several months to prepare, Carlsen may be able to neutralize that edge.

I hate to be a pessimist, but I think it will be very hard for Anand.

Suresh, this is nothing new. Topalov did the same, I believe. Actually Karjakin did not give much of a taste of Carlsen --- as kujo pointed out. It is just that Carlsen does it so much better. Again, imho -- I'm a novice.

Anand has climbed back into the top 3 ranks of FIDE list, as of April 2014 with 2785 ELO rating. He is now ranked number 3. This is happening after a gap of 2.5 years. The last time he was in top 3 was in Nov 2011 list, as number 2.

In the March rating list 21 ELO points separated 7 of the top 9 GMs. Now, only 13 points separate these 7 GMs! they are all incredibly bunched together. Carlsen is nearly 96 points ahead of Anand, and Aronian is 27 points ahead.

Tolamu, why this old news?

This happened in December 2013 and Anand lost his match against Kramnik in the quarters ... After drawing first game with White, Kramnik defeated Anand in 2nd game playing with Black.

Uh! So sorry! I found that news item when peruse news.google.com today. Their bot must have inserted it by mistake. I was so excited that I didn't check the date. I, a great critic of bhagatghavri, just acted like him.

Well, this is current news for sure. Anand is doing well as he wins Bilbao Master with a round to spare :) . The 4-player tournament also had Aronian, along with Vallejo and Ponomariov. Unbeaten Anand has won 3 times and drawn 2 times. In the last round Anand plays Aronian with black.
Again, it looks like Anand is playing with some new found energy since losing the World Championship. His live rating has also gone up and he is #4 with 2796.5, just 0.2 behind #3 Grischuk. This is his highest rating since March 2012. Can he climb back to 2800 level ( if he beats Aronian in next round)?

With Carlsen losing a rare tournament to Caruana, the Anand-Carlsen World Championship-2 becomes more attractive.

And Vishy lost to Aronian pretty badly in the last round, getting down to 2791.8 in the live ratings, although he ended up winning the Bilbao Masters with a slender margin of 1 point (3-1-0 scoring system)....
