Viswanathan Anand - World Champ for 8 Years.

Basically a froum to cover chess now that we seem to have sufficient interest in the game.

Viswanathan Anand - World Champ for 8 Years.

Post by Kumar »

Initially I thought of starting with Humpy's thread, but that would be disservice to Great Master !!! So here we go !!!

Anand, known also as Vishy (to the chess fraternity) is going to be representing India in the coming olympics, giving us a very good chance of a medal!!!

Mr.Krishnaswamy, what are Anand's future plans (as far as chess is concerned?)

ANAND TO LEAD A WORLD TEAM

Anand followers might like to know that Vishy will be leading a ‘Rest of the World’ team against a team called “The Petrosyan Team” between July 10-15 in Moscow.

The event is part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of Tigran Petrosyan, one of the great exponents of the game and a former world champion.

The World team will have Anand, Peter Svidler and Michael Adams and three others.

“The Petrosyan Team” will have players, who have a ‘Armenian link’, and will include Garry Kasparov, who is half Armenian. It will also have Boris Gelfand, a trainee of Petrosyan, Peter Leko, who is married to a Petrosyan (Arshak, Peter’s father-in-law, will be the coach of the Petrosyan team, but is no relative of Tigran).

An article on Anand's marriage and recent India visit has appeared here below. It features interesting interview with Anand and Aruna. They have some interesting (& unseen by most members I think) photos from Anand's marriage as well.

And Vishwanathan Anand has become the first non-Russian to win the coveted Chess Oscar for the fourth time ... Well deserving highest most chess award.

Check link and some quotes from Rediff site ...
http://in.rediff.com/sports/2005/apr/13anand.htm
Anand said, "It is always an honour to be acknowledged for your performance. In Chess winning an Oscar means the pundits have acclaimed your success. In 2004 I played the best and I silenced the classical chess critics by also winning all the classical events I played in. Chess has historically been seen as a Russian game and I think as an Indian to win the award four times over it is indeed an awesome feeling."

This year 445 chess specialists people from 75 countries voted for the winner. Anand figured on every list, and was voted the first among 279 contenders. Last year Anand had received 232 firsts.
Check the margin of points between Anand and Garry ...

1. Vishwanathan Anand (India) - 5205 pts. (279 first places) ... :notworthy:
2. Garry Kasparov (Russia) - 3664 pts. (60 first places)
3. Peter Leko (Hungary) 3485 pts. (43 first places)
4. Vladimir Kramnik (Russia) 3344 pts. (37 first places)

Expected one. Congrats Anand!! Further secures his standing as one of the all time chess greats. It's a pity he has had to play in an era when FIDE is in a mess about world championships. But, still he showed his greatness by being in worlds's top 3 players for around 10 years. And, he came from a country where Chess wan't a big sport in his time. Only Bobby Fischer has done something similar before.

Red: Guess Russians still prefer one of their own. How else you can explain 37 first places vote to Kramnik, who has had one of the worst year for him recently.

Great achievement!! :notworthy: Another interesting record to note is that Kasparov (5) and Anand(4) have won it 9 times in last ten year, Karmnik winning once in 2000.

FIDE is again holding a world championship (in October this year) in an attempt to unify the world title. Anand has agreed to participate.
The world's top-8 players (including Kasparov and Kramnik) have been invited to participate in a double round-robin format. But since Kasparov has retired, he's unlikely to be there. And Kramnik has yet to confirm participation (with two days to go before the deadline). Here's the story from rediff:
