Viswanathan Anand - World Champ for 8 Years.

Basically a froum to cover chess now that we seem to have sufficient interest in the game.

Anand drew with Rauf in 6th round and beats Adams in the seventh. Caruna got wins in both rounds while Carlson drew 6th and won 7th. All other games were draws.

So, these are the standing after 7th round -

Carlsen Magnus 5.5
Anand Viswanathan 4.5
So Wesley 4
Caruana Fabiano 4
Mamedyarov Shakhriyar 3.5
Giri Anish 3
Vachier-Lagrave Maxime 3
Mamedov Rauf 3
Kramnik Vladimir 2.5
Adams Michael 2

2 games left and It looks difficult to catch Carsen unless he blunders away. Anand has games left against Caruna and Mamedyarov which are not easy. with 2 draws he will have a fair chance of getting second place. A win in one of the 2 games will make it sure.

Anand is showing great form as he wins another game in the penultimate round to (a) close the gap with Carlsen to just 1/2 point with one round to go; (b) move to # 2 in the world ranking; (c) cross 2800 ELO rating mark once again.

Mamedyarov got in time trouble and somehow he manage to play his 40th move with 2 seconds left in the clock. But it was anyway a lost position for him and Anand got the full point. Earlier, Carlsen split the point with So and ensure that he enters the last round with at least half a point. So with one round to go, only two players are in running. The last round match up:

Carlsen vs Mamedov
Caruana vs Anand

Carlsen has an advantage with white against the lowest ranked player in the tournament, however, Mamedov has managed to draw all his games so far except one against So. Let's see if Mamedov can hold one more game against the best player in the world. If Mamedov manages to hold, it gives a window of opportunity for Anand to catch up by winning with black against Caruana - a tough task. Theoretically Anand can win it all if he wins and Carlsen loses tomorrow.

Anand is definitely enjoying his chess and playing at very high level. He won the last tournament (no Carlsen there) and once again in the running in this tournament. There was considerable dip in his chess when he was world champ. The pressure of defending crown inhibited his play. Still the gulf between Carlsen and Anand, matter of fact, any other player in the world, is huge. And that's because Carlsen is too good.

In a perfectly drawn position, Mamedov blundered and handed over the game to Carlsen. All other matches were drawn. Carlsen wins yet another tournament. He has won all the tournaments that he played this year so far. Carlsen and Anand were the only two unbeaten players in this tournament. While Carlsen won 5 of 9 games, Anand won 3 of them. So also won 3 games but lost 2.

Code: Select all

1 Carlsen 7.0/9
2 Anand 6.0/9
3 Caruana 5.0/9
4 So 5.0/9
5 Kramnik 4.0/9
6 Mamedyarov 4.0/9
7 Giri 3.5/9
8 Vachier-Lagrave 3.5/9
9 Adams 3.5/9
10	Mamedov 3.5/9

(4538) Vishyanand – Minor planet named after chess player

(4538) Vishyanand – Minor planet named after chess player
The Minor Planet Center, which operates at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, is an organization tasked with being the repository of all observations of minor planets and comets, and computing orbits for them. MPC is responsible for the identification, designation and orbit computation for all of these objects.
Recently staff member Michael Rudenko was invited to suggest a name for minor planet (4538), discovered back in 1988 and still unnamed.
"My two passions in life are astronomy and chess," says Mike, who has a Playchess account. "I thought it might be appropriate to name a minor planet in honor of a chess grandmaster. My thoughts at once turned to Viswanathan Anand who, in addition to being the fifteenth world chess champion, is also an astronomy buff."
Michael Rudenko proposed the name "Vishyanand" (adhering to rules requiring names to be 16 characters or fewer, and preferably without spaces), along with a brief citation explaining the reason for the name. To his delight, the committee gave its approval, and minor planet (4538) is now officially known as "(4538) Vishyanand". The citation reads: "Viswanathan (Vishy) Anand (b. 1969) was India's first chess grandmaster. He went on to become the fifteenth undisputed world chess champion. In addition to his passion for chess, he is also an avid astrophotography enthusiast."
If anyone knows how to compute orbit using orbital elements, here is the informaiton:

Code: Select all

Number	Name/desig.	MeanAnomaly M	Long.ofPerihelionArg w	Long.ofPerihelion L	Long.ofAsce.Node o	Inclination. i
4538 Vishyanand 4.27439° 162.93917° 22.27148° 219.33231° 3.948644°

Not so good LCC for Vishy.... He was 2.5/5 with a loss to Naka and a win to Topalov, but lost the next two rounds to Grischuk and MVL which put him on the back foot and he finished 3.5/9, just .5 points ahead of Topalov, who hit rock bottom.....

There was a 3-way tie at the top between Giri, MVL and Carlsen... Carlsen won it in the tie-break games...

With this performance Vishy dropped about 12 Elo and dropped from 2796 (#3) to 2784(#8) in the live ratings list....

Hopefully Vishy will find some resources to bounce back... :goodluck:

Anand did fairly well in the Zurich Blitz where he beat Nakamura but lost to Aronian. With 3 pts he finished tied second behind Nakmura (3.5) in a field of 6 players. The second position means Anand will have three whites and two blacks in following Zurich 2016 Rapid tournament.

Good to see Anand still competitive with the 10 best players in the world behind the world champion, and finishing second in this strong field.

10th Tal Memorial

Vishy is playing in the 10th Tal Memorial this week.

It is a 10-player all-play-all round-robin event featuring Kramnik, Aronian, Shak and Giri among others...

After a draw in R1 against Giri, Vishy gave a study like performance with white pieces refuting Shak's piece sac to come out on top and is in joint lead with 1.5/2 along with Anish and Nepo...

That moves him up in the rating list to 2780.5, clear of the fast approaching Hari with a cushion of 11.6 ELO....

After the rest day today (they had to play the blitz before the main event started, hence the rest day after R2), he'll be up against Li Chao with black pieces... :goodluck:

In the third round, Vishy drew with Li Chao, in the fourth round he lost to Kramnik but came back well in the fifth round to beat Gelfand. He is currently tied third along with Chao. Anish Giri is at the top with 4 points.

Vishy drew with Li Chao in the 3rd round and lost to Kramnik today in the 4th round...

Won with white pieces against Gelfand in the 5th round and drew with black pieces against Tomashevsky.....

So far, he had 2 whites and 4 blacks - won both his white games... (due to get two more whites in the last 3 rounds)

He is currently 3.5/6 and is in the mid-group tied for 3rd, .5 points behind Giri and 1 point behind the leader Nepo...

2779.4 in the live ratings at #8..., well clear of Hari...
