After a good Gibraltar tournament, where he missed qualifying for the play-off by a whisker, Hari came back with only a day's rest to play for his Bundesliga team and won two games and closed the gap to Anand to wihin one ELO..... 2761.2 to Vishy's 2762.1...

IMSA Elite Mind Games 2016

Hari had a great first two days in the Blitz tournament being within .5 points of the lead on the first day (10 rounds) and the joint leader on the second day (20 rounds), with only one loss on each day...
Had a set-back on the final day with 4 consecutive losses (Rd 22 - Rd 25), but came back strongly with 2 wins in the final 4 rounds to finish 3rd on tie-break....
He gains a mammoth 113.4 ELO to crack the Top-20 at #19 of the Blitz live ratings with 2774.2, 12 ELO adrift of Vishy who is #15...

Hari finished 7th in the previously contested Rapid tournament.....

This is huuuuuuuuuge!!!

Congratulations, Hari !!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

So, the baton changed hands for the first time in more than 30 years? This could be a short lived exchange, but pretty significant one nevertheless. Gives Hari good motivation to keep improving and inch closer to the elite crowd.

Vishy losing to Karjakin was only one part of Hari getting to the Top...

Another part was a quite couple of wins by Hari over the weekend in the Bundesliga for SG Solingen helping them to the top of the standings leaving behind the the legendary OSG Baden Baden....

Congrats Hari!!!

Having said that, I'm hoping to see some back and forth between Vishy and Hari and the baton changing hands..... :D

After his steady progress to the top over the last couple of years, Hari lands a chance to play his 2nd big closed tournament (Norway Chess 2016) in April alongside Magnus, Giri, Kramnik Aronian, MVL, Topalov, Karjakin, etc...

Hari played the Corus 'A' earlier after qualifying in by virtue of his Corus 'B' win the year before...

Harikrishna did not have a good start in the Norway Chess 2016 tournament as he lost his first round match to Carlsen. Carlsen took full use of his white color. Game was over in 41 moves, soon after the time control. Kramnik and Giri were other two who made the wining start.

Yes, bad start.... He is usually known for his solid play...

In the 2nd round, he drew with Eljanov with black pieces...

In the 3rd round, he drew with Topalov in 23 moves with white pieces... :frown:

In the 4th rounds today, Hari had a great opportunity to bring home his first win of the tournament with black pieces agains Nils... But he missed the right moves to get the game to a far superior Q and same colored bishop... and drew it in the end... :damn:

He's just one rung above the bottom with 1.5 points after 4 rounds... and already lost 5.5 ELO... A win today would have made it even for him in terms of ELO.. and would have brought him into the mid-field in terms of tournament standings... :goodluck:

Yes, a fantastic win for Hari against Li Chao with some very precise play... and brings him to 50% after 5 rounds and to the mid-field in the leaderboard...

And he follows it up with another stupendous win against Giri today.... :notworthy:

3.5/6 and joint first with Kramnik and Magnus. Magnus' game from today against MVL is still in progress alongside the game between Li Chao-Topalov

Hari would at least be joint 2nd after those results have been decided... :D

Tomorrow is a rest day...

Hari has whites against MVL in the next round and Aronian in the last round. He gets black pieces against Kramnik in the 8th round... :goodluck:

With today's win, he erases his ELO deficit from this tournament and bumps himself to within 2 ELO of Vishy's 2770.
Another win in the last 3 rounds without any hiccups would seal it for Hari as the Indian #1... But I want more... go for the tournament Hari!!! :goodluck:

Yes! A stupendous victory over Giri. Yeah!! :bounce: :bounce:
Harikrishna is now in the top half where Carlsen leads with 4.0 points and others (LVL, Kramnik, Hari and Topalov) are all tied 2nd with 3.5 points.

By the way Hari has beaten Giri earlier too, in 2014. But that was with white and this time it is with black which makes it sweeter.

@prasantham thanks. I've too short a memory to remember that. But I dd see some stats and in past few years he has had some impressive victories against the likes of Aronian, Topalov, Caruana.

With this victory, Harikrishna moves to his all time high rating of 2767.8. It has been long time in waiting, but finally Hari has arrived. His has been making steady progress up the rating for last few years. Look at his rating till the end of 2011 and from the beginning of 2012. He was stuck for years in the sub 2700 range [2650- 2685] and looked like he won't break thru 2700. But from the start of 2012, he took an entirely different path. He finally broke the 2700 barrier in in Feb 2013 and with steady progress he has now made it to the company of elite players. He is ranked 12th now and once again at the tail of Anand (2770) and knocking at the door for India#1 position. (He did get ahead of Anand for one day earlier). Let's see when he breaks into top 10. All the best Hari.
