Koneru Humpy wins Kaupthing GM Open!
Given her phenomenal performance in two recent tournaments, she might get close to 2600 in the October list.

Remarkable achievement by Koneru Humpy. Congratulations to her, especially for being only the second woman player to break (or get close to ) the 2600 ELO mark!!

Thats a remarkable achievement. Congratulations Koneru Humpy. I hope she soon makes some noise even in men's section. She is just 20 and she has a bright future. Go Humpy!

Very interesting writeup on Humpy in the NYT. Keep in mind that she was given a lot of grief by our men as well. This, of course, ended when she showed up at the men's National A and played every match to win (or lose) -- none of those friendly draws. It would be nice to see her move to the upper echelons of chess.

Polgar May Get Some Company as a Woman in the Elite Ranks

By DYLAN LOEB McCLAIN

A nagging question over the years has been: Why aren’t there more good players who are women?

Since the World Chess Federation began ranking players more than 40 years ago, only one, Judit Polgar of Hungary, has been in the top 100.

Some men, notably Garry Kasparov, the former champion, have suggested that women do not have the psychological makeup (meaning aggressiveness) or intellectual capacity to play high-level chess.

Late last year, a study in Psychological Science concluded that that was not necessarily true. It said a likely reason for the dearth of good women players was that not enough of them played competitive chess.

The study was by Christopher F. Chabris, a research associate in the psychology department at Harvard, and Mark E. Glickman, an associate professor of health policy and management at Boston University.

“If you look at boys and girls who started at roughly the same playing strength,” Professor Glickman said, “if you look at them at the start and follow them over time, there tends not to be a difference.”

Still, it is puzzling that Polgar has stood alone for so long. At long last, however, she may be about to get some help in the battle of the sexes.

Humpy Koneru, a 20-year-old from India, may be poised to break into the elite ranks. She is now the No. 2 woman in the world, one of just 10 to earn the title of grandmaster, which she did at 15 years 2 months, three months younger than Polgar was when she earned the title. Over the last 18 months, she has played a number of strong tournaments against men, including the second section of the elite Corus tournament in 2006, with good results.

Two weeks ago, in a field with 13 grandmasters, she tied for first at the Kaupthing Open in Luxembourg with Hannes Stefansson of Iceland. Going into the last round, she was in a six-way tie for first, but beat Sebastian Siebrecht of Germany. How’s that for lack of aggression?

After 3 Nf3, Siebrecht had a few options as Black, but steered the game into a Benoni opening, showing he was spoiling for a fight.

Koneru and Siebrecht showed that they knew recent theory, playing more than 20 moves that followed the course of recent games, in particular a 2001 encounter between Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov, which ended in a draw.

Siebrecht should have removed his king from in front of Koneru’s rook with 22 ... Kh8. Koneru’s 29 Rf1 was not the most accurate, as Siebrecht could have played 29 ... Qb2. Instead, 29 ... Qd5 opened the critical a2/g8 diagonal for White’s bishop.

Still, the position was not fatal. After 30 f5, Siebrecht could play 30 ... c4, when 31 Bc4 is met by 31 ... Rf5.

But 30 ... Ref7 was a critical error. Even after 31 ... Rf5 32 Rh4 Kg8 33 Rg1 Qb7 34 Bc3, Black is losing.

Siebrecht fell on his sword with 33... Be4 rather than play out a most likely hopeless position with 34 ... Qg2 35 Kg2 Bc2.

Re: Koneru Humpy - Player Thread

A couple of days back, the Hindu reported that Koneru Humpy became a super GM. I was wondering how and when her ELO rating crossed 2700. Well it looks like it has crossed 2600 which in the old days was enough to be called a super GM. But that is not true today.

There is a nice discussion of this issue in Chessbase. According to that article (written in 2004), in 1983 there were only 13 players with a 2600+ ELO rating. The number now exceeds 100 and hence it doesn't make sense to call someone with a 2600+ rating a super GM. Susan Polgar's blog also has some nice discussion on this especially in the comments section. Follow the link below:

http://susanpolgar.blogspot.com/2007/08 ... humpy.html

All in all, it is much ado about nothing. The Hindu reporter should have known better ....

I think no woman, with the exception of Judith Polgar, has reached 2600 so far. So, it is something of an achievement for Humpy.  This may not be such a landmark for women for much longer with upcoming talented girls like Hou Yifan (already at 2523 at a tender age of 13).The reporter must have reused the ancient Super-GM criterion for its sound bite value.

Viji, you are right that Humpy is second woman to cross the 2600 mark. The reporter also quotes Humpy as saying that she is the third Indian to cross 2600 after Anand and Sasi. How can she forget her statemate, Hari? I  think that she should focus on getting to 2700+ which is where Judith Polgar is rather than get carried away on reaching 2600. That is well within her reach because she has the drive and focus that is needed to achieve such a lofty goal. I am glad you brought up the name of Hou Yifan who is going break every record that Humpy has set in the various age groups.

Humpy shared the 3rd spot with Sargissian (2643) at Second Ruy López International Chess Festival in Mérida behing Michael Adams (2729) and Zhang Pengxiang (2640). She will come 4th in tiebreak though. She beat Caruana (2620) a rising junior, Granda (2609) and only local, Candelario (2537). She drew her game against Hou Yifan and Zhang Pengxiang and lost only to Adams.

Hou did not to that well in that tournament.

Humpy played at 2715 level! Her previous tournament, 3rd Kolkata International was an "even" performance. She needs to play like this if she is going to steadily make it to top 100 (which I think she would ).

Humpy (2622) is the top seed at North Urals Cup 2008.
http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=4789

She has disastrous start with two losses (to Gm Antoaneta Stefanova 2550, Bulgaria and IM Marie Sebag 2529, France).

http://www.northuralscup.ru/2008/tournamenteng.shtml

Hope she recovers from it and put up a good show in the remaining five(?) games.

A report on her first round loss.

Humpy opens her book with a win against Pia Cramling (2544 Sweden) who is also having a bad tournament so far. Seems like she faced the semi-slav once more, this time successfully. Winner of the first game against Humpy, Stefanova leads with 2.5 points.

After a day of restful group activities ( see http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=4802), everyone is feeling friendly and peaceful. All four draws today. Humpy at 1.5, Stefanova, the leader is at 3 points.

Humpy at 3pts after six games. A win tomorrow would be good to stop serious rating loss for her. Stefanova at is 4 pts (she lost one game). Anna Ushenina is at 3.5. Humpy has a chance of a tie for first if she beats Ushenina and Xu Yuhua beats Stefanova tomorrow.
