Adhiban Baskaran (the 2008 World Under-16 Champion)

Post by jaydeep »

In January 23 yrs old Adhiban won the 2016 Tata Steel Challengers Tournament in a 3-way tie, which qualified him to play in the 2017 Tata Steel Masters Tournament ... The co-leaders GM Alexei Dreev and GM Eltaj Safarli, all of whom earned 9 points out of 13 ... However Adhiban defeated them both, he had the better tiebreaks and, therefore, guaranteed the spot in the next Tata Steel Masters tournament.

Adhiban won Reykjavik Open title in Iceland.

Adhiban wins Reykjavik Open

I am not really sure what level title this is and if it will improve his rating.

High challenger / low 250 is the level I would put it at.

Adhiban is back in the top 100 after this but he is still some ways off his peak rating and ranking. Hopefully it a turnaround of fortunes of him after many months of very poor form.

The most exciting thing for me in this tournament was Nihal's performance. He was leading after the round 5 and was the better player in almost every game he played until round 8. Tiredness, both physical and mental, cost him points in the last couple of rounds but that is nothing concerning for a 13-year old.

He got his second GM norm and his rating goes past 2550 after a string of very good performances (but no norms like in Russia where he played at a high level for 5 rounds before collapsing in the last few).

That said, his performance in the first 5 rounds in his previous few tournaments is ridiculously good for his age. Very mature playing style with solid positional understanding.
