Ok, when I first read this I was taken aback to read that Indian women table tennis players have reached the QF of world team table tennis championships.

It turned that they have reached QF of the second division which comprises of those nations ranked below top 24 who are in top division. So, essentially they are fighting it out for places 25-32 in the world. Not bad but it poured water over my initial enthusiasm reading that they have reached the top 8 in the world. :D

I will try to update full results later when I get time.

Rather disappointing end to the campaign on both mens' and womens side. Mens team was ranked 21st, and seeded to advance to the Championship division. Also womens team was ranked 25th, and so had a good shot at making it to the Championship division. However men finished a disappointing 33rd and women 29th; and so doomed to the 2nd division for quite some time.

Here are the results of the crucial knockout match with rankings at the start of the tournament:
Mens:
Achanta Sharath Kamal[39] lost to Omar Assar[73] 8-11 11-5 11-7 4-11 6-11
Soumyajit Ghosh[118] lost to El-Sayed Lashin[108] 9-11 11-9 11-13 5-11
Harmeet Desai[136] lost to Ahmed Saleh[148] 5-11 4-11 11-7 7-11

Womens:
Shamini Kumaresan[167] lost to Gui Lin[195] 8-11 11-7 5-11 11-9 7-11
Manika Batra[138] beat Ligia Silva[212] 13-11 7-11 11-4 12-10
Ankita Das[171] lost to Caroline Kumahara[135] 4-11 8-11 11-7 6-11
Manika Batra[138] lost to Gui Lin[195] 12-14 7-11 12-10 5-11

As you can see, almost all our players underperformed, so they are probably overranked.

Asian Cup Table Tennis started today in Jaipur and Achanta Sharat Kalam had one of the best days of his career when beat world no. 8 and world no. 16 back to back to reach the QF.

This is the report -

Asian Cup TT: Giant-killer Sharath sizzles into quarter-finals

"It has to be one of the biggest days of (my) career. To beat these world class players in a matter of hours is extremely satisfying. Beating Joo was definitely tougher as he is the best defender around. I really had to dig deep," said a drained out Sharath, who made the last-eight stage of the premier continental event for the second year in a row.

That is a good showing by Sharath. Playing in Europe has definitely helped him improve -- this is something that our TT association doesn't appreciate.

Good time for Indian table tennis players as Achantha Sharath Kamal reaches a career high ranking of 32 and Soumyajit Ghosh becomes only the 4th player to reach top 100 in the world after Kamlesh Mehta, Chetan Baboor and Shrarath Kamal.

Pinnacle for Sharath in Summer of 32

Indian TT League next year
The Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) have announced that they are planning an Indian Table Tennis League, and the tournament is set to take off on 28 May, 2016, and will continue until 12 June. Eight franchisee sides will be competing for the prize money of Rs 1 crore.

The eight teams will constitute of a foreign male and female player each, besides an Indian in both the gender categories.

And according to the TFFI, this franchisee league will get a dedicated window by world table tennis body International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).
Hope this one actually materializes.

I haven't followed TableTennis much but its interesting that inspite of TT being such a popular sport in India, we have so few professionals. Is this a case of lack of organized structure through which budding players can be funneled?
