Achantha Sharath Kamal won his first pro title after 10 years beating 2 higher ranked players in semi final and final-

Sharath Kamal bags Oman Open crown, ends decade-long wait for Pro Tour title

Sharath Kamal is now 37. Longevity may be a bit more in table tennis. But, still quite noteworthy that is able to fight on with top 30 players of world at this age.

The Indian men's team is in Division II, Group E with Slovenia, Slovakis, Egypt, Portugal and Vietnam.

The Indian women's team is in Division II, Group E with Slovenia, Bulgaria, Austria, Denmark and Nigeria.

There is a Championship Division with 12 teams. It is composed of the top 8 teams from the previous World Championship plus the 4 highest ranked team as of January 2004.

There are first, second, third and fourth Divisions, and each of the first three divisions will have 12 teams based on the computer team ranking. The remaining teams will be put in the fourth division and these teams will play for 49th position and worse.

Medals will be awarded in each division. The top 6 teams from the Championship Division and the winner of First Division will automatically qualify for the Championship Division for the next World Championship.

PKB, you are correct that the Indian teams used to rank in the 12th to 16th spots in the 1970s but our ranking has gone down recently based on the placement of the team at this world championship. In the next day or so I am planning to write in this forum about the rise and fall of Indian table-tennis.
The Champions Tennis League (CTL) was a team tennis tournament in India held two times only in November 2014 and in late 2015, across six Indian cities

Sathiyan Ganashekhran and Sutirtha Mukherjee qualfied for the Tokyo olympics by winning the Asian qualfying tournament in Doha today.

Achanta Sharath Kamal and more fancied Manika Batra finished runner up but they are almost sure to qualify by virtue of their ranking after they are updated in April.

In mixed double qualification tournament pair of Achanta Sharath KAmal and Manika Batra are thru to the SF. They will have to win 2 matches tomorrow if they have to qualify as a pair.

Well, to make it clear, from olympicchannel.com
How the qualifying process works at Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament
The Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament will offer Tokyo 2020 spots in the singles and mixed doubles categories.

Six players each in the men’s and women’s singles will qualify for Tokyo from this event.

Players will be divided into groups based on geographical regions – Central Asia, South Asia, East Asia and Southeast Asia. Players from West Asia have already qualified for Tokyo, so they will not play in this Doha tournament.

Players will take part in a round-robin format in their respective groups, and the winner of each group will qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

The runner-up in each group will be on the reserves list to make the Tokyo Olympics.

With five group winners (including West Asia) being given an Olympic spot, the sixth and final spot will be given to the highest-ranked player in the reserves list, which will be decided according to the ITTF Olympic Qualification Ranking Lists in April.
So, Sharath and Manika will be in the reserve list but they are surely going to be the top ranked players in the reserve list as of April. So, techincally they have not qualified but practically they have qualified. :D

For mixed doubles-
In the mixed doubles, there is only one Tokyo spot up for grabs, which will be decided by the winner of a knockout tournament, with the runners-up being the reserve pair.
And Sharath and Manika are thru to the final beating a pair from Singapore. 12-10, 9-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-8, 13-11.

Now our 19th ranked pair will meet world 5th ranked Korean pair in the final on Saturday. It will be a repeat of their clash from the 2018 Asian Games where Sharath and Batra had defeated this pair on their way to a historic bronze medal. So, hoping for a similar upset win tomorrow.

Was Manika asked to lose against fellow Indian, so both of them could get in? I think her opponent's ranking was much lower. Someone should investigate this.
