I guess the only real hope was Sandeep Mann. Hopefully, he'll have one other chance to qualify.

In the heaviest weight classes our wrestlers aren't really world class.

Asian wrestling championships began 3 days ago in Kazakhstan.

Our greco roman guys drew a blank. Many of the olympic qualfied wrestlers are not competing here and still they could not win even a medal. They have really regressed this year.

Women wrestling started today. Again weak field here with Japan and China missing. On the first day, gold in non olympic 59 kg category for Sarita Mor. She had also won a gold in last year's Asian championships in same weight category. So, she appears a good talent. But, will have to move up or down a category if she has to go olympics in future. But, India has strong contenders in 57 and 62 kgs in Anshu and Sonam who have qualified for Tokyo. Still, it is good to build some depth there. 2 more bronze medals - Seema in 50 kgs and Pooja in 76 kgs. Both of them are olympic weight categories . So, these 2 wrestlers will most likely fight for last available 2 quotas next month.

Tomorrow, Vinesh will up in 53 kgs and should not be much a challenge for her with no China and Japan. Our other 2 olympic qualfied wrestlers, Anshu and Sonam are also there in the draw ( not sure if Sonam will participate though as she was injured after qualfying last week) . And Sakshi Malik and Divya Kakran in non olympic weight classes. So, hopefully, tomorrow will be a good day for us.

3 golds for our women today for Vinesh, Anshu and Divya Kakran. Silver for Sakshi Malik. Sonam did not compete due to injury.

The competition was not really good here for Visnesh and Anshu. No Japanese and Chinese and Mongolia also did not field their olympic qualfiers wrestlers here. So, it was like 3 out of top 4 wrestlers were not here and Vinesh/Anshu could win gold easily.

Tomorrow, mens freestyle starts and our 2 best wrestlers, Bajarang and Ravi Kumar will be in action tomorrow. Barring major upsets, Bajrang will meet Japanese Otoguru in the final who has beaten him twice before.

Ravi Kumar and Bajarang thru to their respective final. Ravi will be up against an Iranian and Bajarang against Japanese Otoguru whom he lost to twice - 2018 world championships and last year's Asian champioships. Real test for both particularly Bajarang.

Our other 3 wrestlers today- Karan, Narsingh Yadav and Satawart Kadian will all fight for bronze medals.

Anti climax as Bajrang gave a walkover to Otoguru due to injury. Really wonder if it was really an injury or it was a tactical walkover by Bajarang not wanting to reveal too much to Otaguru before Tokyo. But, then why did he play here as he anyway was expected to beat everyone else.

Ravi Kumar easily beat the Iranaian 9-3 to win gold. Not much olympic level competition here for Ravi but still he won all his bouts easily which is a relief as he had went off form a bit in couple of tournaments he had played after covid break.

Bronze medals for Narsingh Yadav, Karan and Kadian.

Today silver for Deepak Punia ( our other olympic qualified wrestler) and bronze for Sanjit in non-olympic weight class. Other wrestlers disappointed.

Deepak got thrashed by Olympic gold medal favorite Hasan Yazdani from Iran. There are at least 3 wrestlers in his weight category who appear far ahead of Deepak - Yazdani, American Taylor and Russian Naifanov. Deepak may be more or less equal to 3-4 others in the field. As there are 4 medals given out at olympics, Deepak will need luck of draw and lot of other things to fall in place for a chance to pick up bronze.

Ravi, Bajarang and Vinesh are our reasonable medal prospects for Tokyo. With North Korean in her category pulling out, I would Vinesh as most favoured of the 3. Ravi and Bajarang are a bit below but none of the 3 are in sure medal category like say Mirabai Chanu is now.

Final world olympics qualifier began today in Sofia, Bulgaria with 2 spots available in each weight class for those wrestlers who have not yet qualfied for Tokyo olympics.

It was mens freestyle day today. And we have a super heavy weight wrestler qualifying for the olympics probably for the first time. In 125Kgs, Sumit Malik won 4 bouts to reach the final and thus get us a quota place for Tokyo olympics. Very good show by Sumit.

Satywart Kadian lost narrowly in QF and Amit Dhankar lost in first round.

So, we will have 4 mens freestyle wrestlers in Tokyo- Ravi Dahiya (57 kg), Bajarang (65 kg), Deepak Punia (86 kg) and Sumit Malik (125 kg.)

Tomorrow, we have womens events and lets us see if we can add anyone to the 3 which we have already qualified.

We did not get any qualifiers in Greco Roman.

In mens freestyle, the only countries which got more qualfiers than us are Russia and Iran ( full team with 6 quotas), US and Kazkstahan ( with 5 each). With 4 quotas we are tied with Japan, Alegeria, Belarus, Turkey and Uzbekistan.

In Womens freestyle, China, Japan, USA, Russia and Mongolia all have full team with 6 qualfiers. We are tied with Tunisia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and Nigeria with 4 spots.

If we assume that counties will win medals in proportion to the quotas earned, we have 75% probability of a medal each in men and women. If we consider that some African countires have got quotas from easier qualficiation pools, our expectation should be 2 medals from Tokyo.

I don't if you all followed this story of Sushil Kumar being suspected to be involved in a murder of another wrestler. This is an article on it-

The Downfall of Sushil Kumar: From Olympic Champion to a Murder Accused

What a fall from grace for India's only 2 time individual medalist.

Sushil has flirted with danger earlier also. Before the last Olympics he was accused by one of this rivals of mixing dope in his food. Nothing was proven but if incidents keep repeating it makes you wonder.

Yeah, there has been so much of smoke all along on Sushil Kumar. There must be fire. Now he is absconding (hiding?) or something, right?

It is sad. He is such a hero for all of us, but he is apparently such a criminal too.

Indian cadet boys ( under 17) had a great run at cadet world championships in freestyle with 2 golds, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals and won the overall freestyle title for the first time in any world championships.
