Encouraging news :

Don't know what the standard of the competition was.
I hope we can win several Golds at the Commonwealth Games. Are we going to have both freestyle & greco-roman at the CWG?
Ultimately we should be looking at wrestling as a sport that can bring us medals consistently at the Olympics.

Re: Indian Wrestling Thread ...
Yes, wrestling could be a regular medal winner for us especially in the middle and lighter middle weights.
However, I think the CG games wrestling standards will be very low. We used to dominate the CG games in the past when our wrestlers were quite far from world class. I think the Asian competitions would be a good barometer for judging world class performances and our top guys should be sent for international competitions in Europe and Asia on a periodic basis.

Nice performance by Sushil! He is clearly one of the top wrestlers in his weight category.
A little dissapointed by the tame losses of the others. It doesn't appear that we have much world class depth in wrestling beyond Sushil.

Just as you said that, in 74 Kg, Ramesh Kumar went on to win the bronze. I think is the first medal for an Indian in world championships after a long time.arjun2761 wrote:Nice performance by Sushil! He is clearly one of the top wrestlers in his weight category.

These are his results -
[R1] KUMAR, Ramesh (IND) d. SCHLATTER, Dustin (USA) 2-1 ( 0-1, 2-0, 1-1)
[R2] KUMAR, Ramesh (IND) d. GRUNDY, Michael (GBR) 2-0 (1-0, 3-2)
[QF] KUMAR, Ramesh (IND) d. TERZIEV, Kiril (BUL) 2-1 (1-0, 2-3, 4-1)
[SF] KUMAR, Ramesh (IND) l. CHAMSULVARAYEV, Chamsulvara (AZE) 0-2 (0-3 , 0-5)
Rapachanges
Bornze medal match - KUMAR, Ramesh (IND) d. BURCA, Alexandr (MDA) 2-1 (0-3, 2-0, 5-4)
Close wins in most of the ties but importantly can on top when it mattered.

Re: Indian Wrestling Thread ...
Congratulations to R. Kumar! R. Kumar and S. Kumar, our wrestling hopes got world-class medals. P. Kumar almost became a wrestler. Perhaps, our coaches should focus on people with the lastname Kumars while talent-hunting

Really very good result for Indian wrestling considering Ramesh Kumar's bronze medal was our only 3rd medal at World champiuonship before this we won 1 bronze medal in 1960 and 1 silver in 1967.

Re: Indian Wrestling Thread ...
Yes, very pleasantly surprised by this medal which is one of the few sports in which we have medals in multiple olympics (1952 and 2008). With a 3rd and 4th place finish, we did pretty well. In the 2008 olympics, we had one medallist and only one other wrestler (Yogeshwar Dutt?) who seemed to get close to a medal.
Hopefully, this can become a sport in which we are regularly in contention for olympic and world championship medals.

Ramesh Kumar's bronze winning bout in this link. Showed very good toughness to come back from behind twice. Wonder why the back of jersey lists his name as Sunil.

nice link arjun! it is a must see video. anyone who has not watched it please do.
down by 4 points (3 - 7) with less than 30 seconds to go in 3rd round, Ramesh comes back with a terrific performance to equalize and win the bronze medal match.

Re: Indian Wrestling Thread ...
India's Sushil Kumar created history when he became the first Indian wrestler to win a gold medal at the world championships when he won the gold today in the 66Kg category at the World Wrestling Championship in Moscow.
These are Sushil's results from this event-
[R1] SUSHIL, Kumar (IND) bye
[R2] SUSHIL, Kumar (IND) d. AKRITIDIS, Anastasios (GRE) 2-0 ( 4-0, 2-0)
[PQF] SUSHIL, Kumar (IND) d. DAUM, Martin Sebastian (GER) 2-0 (2-1,2-0)
[QF] SUSHIL, Kumar (IND) d. BUYANJAV, Batzorig (MGL) 2-0 (6-0, 3-1)
[SF] SUSHIL, Kumar (IND) d. HASANOV, Jabrayil (AZE) 2-1 (0-1,1-0, 3-2)
[F] SUSHIL, Kumar (IND) d. GOGAEV, Alan (RUS) 2-0 (2-1,1-0)
Well done, Sushil.
Sushil is going from strength to strength now. After the historic bronze in 2008 Olympics, he had a bit of low period. But, eariler this year he won the gold at the Asian championships & now comes this world championships gold. Now, looking forward to Asiad gold from him. ( Commomwealth games of course should be easy.)
