The Wrestling Federation of India has split, with Kartar Singh, double gold medal winner in Asian Games, taking over as President of one of the factions. Along with him as Secretary is Prem Nath, Olympian. Kartar was the secretary of the existing federation. The original federation, headed by Mr. Malik, a Police officer from Haryana, has claimed that there was no special general meeting and no elections. The tussle now will be to select the wrestlers for Olympics. The Indian Olympic Association seems to support the Kartar Singh-headed faction.

Re: Indian Wrestling
Wonder if this is the same Sushil Kumar who also qualified in 2004?
Also, are any of these ranked in the top 10 or so to have a chance at winning a medal? I'm pretty sure we have no chance in the heavy weight categories but our middle weights may have a chance....

Third ranked Indian is Naveen in 96 kg/211.5 lbs category.

Yes, it is the same Sushil Kumar who qualified for 60 kg. in last olympics. He could not do much there finishing 13th among 19 competitiors.arjun2761 wrote: Wonder if this is the same Sushil Kumar who also qualified in 2004?
However, he along with Yogeshwar Dutt who has also qualified here ( as both of them did in last olympics) won bronze medals in doha asian games in 2006. Then, Sushil finished 7th in the world championships last year at Baku.
So, Sushil Kumar seems to be India's best bet in wrestling but still will have to raise his performance quite a bit to get among top 3 .

Re: Indian Wrestling
The disintegration of the USSR has made international wrestling a much tougher sport with competitive entries from 6-7 countries instead of just 1. Furthermore, several of these former Soviet countries are in Asia making Asiad medals in wrestling that much tougher...

Excellent prediction, Sameer.
Man, what a fantastic forum this is. Who could have known that one of the regulars here would actually have picked in advance the one wrestler who was likely to get us a bronze medal? In retrospect, the world #7 would certainly have stood a very good chance of finishing among the top-4 (which is what is required to win a bronze). He was unlucky with his first round opponent, but then fully lived upto his billing to come back with the bronze.
I love his attitude in particular, as seen in this story:
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1080821/j ... 722541.jsp
“The bronze medal is a great honour but my world does not come to an end here. I came to Beijing in search of a gold medal. I fell short of the gold…. Preparations for the London Olympics start tomorrow.” Wow!!!
Come on, man, celebrate for a few more days before starting preparations for London...!

Re: Indian Wrestling Thread ...
Love their spirit! I think in Athens they realized they could compete with the best. In Beijing, they have now realized that they can beat the best!!

I did not say much only saying that he was the best bet for India among the wrestlers & has an outside chance.
Sushil Kumar had finished 4th in 2003 world championships & also in Doha Asian games he lost narrowly to eventual gold medalist . So, he should have been certainly among at least top 6 or so seeds going into the contest. He performed even better then that.
Wresting still has quite a bit of following in Northern India & some parts of Maharashtra. If talent is identified early here & given proper training on modern techniques , we should be able to consistenly produce medal winners in Olympics in wrestling.

Re: Indian Wrestling Thread ...
Indeed it does, and there is a rather hoary wrestling tradition in north India. Mulayam Singh Yadav, for instance, was a wrestler before he became a politician!
We really need to harness that tradition more effectively and produce more world-class wrestlers. We have always had competitive Asian and Commonwealth-level wrestlers, but I hope Sushil heralds the start of a new era of world-beaters.

A very honest sounding article from 1998 Asian Games gold medallist Dingko Singh
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1080823/j ... 732205.jsp
You know what, Dingko has decided to make a comeback in 60kg boxing, thanks to Vijendar and company! .. Come on back, man. Why not?

The Steering Committee of Government of India has also identified 12 Indian and two foreign coaches in consultations with Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to be associated with the wrestlers.
AnkitTo enhance transparency and placing all information relating to the Scheme in public domain, the Committee has directed the WFI to start a comprehensive website within two months which should contain the names, profiles of players, compilation of various facilities for the sports available country-wide, list of major competitions in India and abroad, details of the National Federation and International Federation among others.
