Yes, no doubt Deepika is talented. Yesterday, at PQF stage she was almost on the verge of elimination. She hit a poor 22 ( 7 & 6 in second and third arrows) in the fourth end to and got tied at 4-4 with an Iraninan archer. I thought she would be totally demoralised by that and lose but than she came up with 10,9 and 9 when it mattered in the last end to win. So,apparently she can put behind nervousness and shoot well. Only if she can do it consistently ( with the help of a mental coach) we may finally hope for a medal from her in Tokyo. Hope is eternal. :D

Looks like these two have been aiming their cupid arrows at each other... Now they are hooked!

pictures of Deepika Kumari wedding with Atanu Das

They look great!... Even the chief minister Soren was there for the wedding. Nice.

This week first archery world cup after long time is happening in Guatemala. Weak field here with Top nations like Korea, China, Taiwab not participating.

In the individial events, the husband/ wife pair of Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari have reached semi finals in their respective events. Both will be up against Mexican opponents on Sunday.

In team events, Indian womens team has reached the final beating Guatemala and Spain easily. They will meet Mexico in the final.

Our mens team ( which has qualfied for Tokyo olympics) had a close loss of 4-5 against Spain in the quarter final. That is a bad result.

In mixed team surprisngly, pair of Atanu and Ankita Bhakat was fielded instead of husband/ wife team. They lost in the SF to Mexico. Now, they will meet USA for bronze.

It doesn't work like that in archery I think. The one's who have the highest score in qualifying from both men's and women's side automatically forms a team. Ankita Bhakat was 2nd while Deepika finished 3rd in qualifying, so Ankita was fielded. It's how it always happened.

Thanks, Depleter for that clarification.

Our womens team has still not qualfied for the Tokyo olympics and will look to do so as being part of top 3 in the final olympic qualfier from non qualfied nations at Paris in June.

Mexico has also not qualified. So, this final here will show us where we stand against our possible opponents in qualfying for Tokyo ( although there are 3 olympic spot available, so both us and Mexico can qualify).

Excellent world cup for our recurve archers at Guatemala.

Our womens team won gold and the husband/ wife team of Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari won golds in individual events. Mixed team of Atanu and Ankita Bhakat won bronze.

But, again this was a depleted field. In mens, out of the 8 nations who have qualfied their teams for Tokyo, only us and Netherlands were there here and among women only Germany was there.

So, one cannot judge much in terms of our medal chances at Tokyo based on these results.

Mostly, still an outside chance of a medal in any of the events for us. We will have to wait to see how we do against stronger competition to see if we can upgrade that expectation.

Archery has always flattered to deceive. But, maybe we are getting there such that we have enough volume that someone will hit one of these days at the Olympics.

If anyone is going to finally do something at olympics, it has to be this girl Deepika Kumari. She has been our best at these world cups which are a level below Olympics and world championships. She has numerous medals in world cups right from 2010 when she was just 16, also a couple of team silvers in world championships and a team bronze in Asian games. She will have to up that level to win a medal in olympics.

Deepika is easily our best bet. Though if we had a 3rd good female archer, women's team would have been our best bet. Ankita Bhakat looks good, but the third spot is still up for the taking. Bari who shot with the team is the current under 18 world champion but she still does need to improve. Atanu looks good and improved but still a bit inconsistent. But one thing which impressed me is, both Deepika and Atanu shot amazingly well in crunch times. That's a good improvement.

Yes, Atanu had 10,10,10 in the last end of both semi final and final. Deepika also somewhat similar. That is very good in crunch and will help against stronger opponents. Yes, if our womens third archer gets good, we may have a real chance in womens team event first to qualify for olympics and then a medal.

The less said and expected from our Arhers, the better. They have disappointed way too many times and their waywardness starts right from the "Ranking rounds" where they manage to stand bottom of the lot and draw the highest ranked opponents right from Round of 16. I would rather be fine with putting a ZERO in our Tokyo medal count expectations from Archers and be happy to be proven wrong.

Agree with Srini. Who can forget the meltdown of Deepika at the Olympics. Of course, it would be great to be totally wrong.

I think there is a decent chance this time of a medal. Anything can happen at the Olympics and it is usually bad when the players get overwhelmed but I see a decent chance.
