Just read that Abhishek Verma won the world championship in compound archery. Unfortunately not an Olympic event.

It is world Cup, not world Championships.

Deepika is in 3 finals tomorrow.- individual, team and mixed team.

She won yet another world cup gold in individual. Two more events to go for her

And she wins all 3 golds. And her scores were very very good throughout. In the semis she shot 29,29,29,27 and in the finals she shot 29,29,28. But she really needs to get in some 30's in there as the conditions were perfect. There was hardly any wind there, and with those conditions if she faces some Korean or anyone from China or Taipei there would be some 30's from the others.

So, when there is Olympics qualifying pressure and nobody cares, Deepika and party come through winning Golds. Is that what happened in France? I am confused, which is why I am asking. All these Golds don't mean anything, right?

Yes, there was no Olympic qualifying pressure here and our team came thru and beat 2 teams who have qualified for Olympics.

But, I think we should give credit to Deepika for coming thru repeatedly at these world cups.

Deepika still gets to compete in individual and mixed team at Tokyo. Hope she makes amends there.

Nah, I am not going to give Deepika any credit. She only performs when nobody cares. She knows very well which events people (including her own team-mates) care for, and when she knows it, she can't control herself. Too bad. But mind is such an important part of archery. She doesn't have it.

It is rare for me to criticize any Indian sportsperson, but in Deepika's case, the truth has been established so many times that there is no getting around it. She can't handle mental pressure when she feels that others care. If we can make her live in some sort of a virtual-reality information bubble, she will be the world's best Archer.

I'm with Jay. Deepika is not mentally strong. It would be wonderful if she can prove us wrong.

^^^ But then again, I am not even saying that she is not mentally strong. I will say it more positively as "she cares too much for others and their opinions". Just be selfish and think that it matters only to herself, and that she can't give a damn for the rest of the world. Somebody should teach her to be a ruthless and selfish person, and she will perform well. Because many top sports persons are like that. They may give the big talk that they are doing it for the team-mates and the country and all that but ultimately they are just competitive and want to beat others (and make money etc) - and they don't give a damn what others think about them, their behavior, or their performance. Deepika doesn't seem to be like that, unfortunately.

Yes, it is a mental issue. Not sure it can be called a mental "weakness". She has shown many times that she CAN focus on the job at hand, but that is when her mind is clear. It is a mental background or mental makeup issue. But it is mental. It is probably not wrong to call it a weakness either. The inability in taking unnecessary thoughts out of the mind, because the basic makeup is not too selfish. That is a weakness.

The problem with Archery in India is that people are more obsessed about who was a better archer 5000 years ago- Arjun or Karna? Nobody is bothered about the present state of archery in India. Unfortunately Arjun was also mentally fragile like the present set of archers and could not perform at the time of the biggest battle. Fortunately he had someone who could give him a pep talk and coach him right through the battle. Our team today needs a modern day version of Sri Krishna.

Deepika Kumari's Netflix documentary is excellent in case anyone has not seen it yet. I think we have a great future in archery. It is sad how society demeaned Kumari just because she failed in the last Olympics.
