Saffronization of Sports??? -- Archery/Olympics

Post by jayakris »

Isn't this saffronization of sports? .. Swamis, Gurukuls, Yoga, etc etc...

Jay

PS: I have always had a bit of a soft corner for Archery and have always felt that Indians would one day do well in that event, though I don't know much of the details of the sport. Could Dola and party do something this time?

Saffronization of Sports??? -- Archery/Olympics

Post by Kumar »

As long as runup to the event is lowkey, chances are better..

AS per Times of India
Last month, five public schools in Meerut including DAV Public School adopted archery. It certainly seems that archery is moving towards its target.
Good TO SEE schools taking up archery ... Sign of good things to come??

Saffronization of Sports??? -- Archery/Olympics

Post by PKBasu »

VK Malhotra, the long-time head of the Archery federation of India, is of course a senior BJP functionary. But this is very apt use of "saffronisation". India's heritage -- yoga, meditation, etc. -- is proving beneficial to practitioners around the world, so it is apposite that it should be used to the benefit of India's own sportsmen, especially in an event that finds many echoes in our ancient epics. The epics should be used as a means to inspire our archers...

Saffronization of Sports??? -- Archery/Olympics

Post by mugu »

The Gurukuls got seriously involved in the Indian archery teams about six years ago. The Gurukul academy in Meerut had been providing some of the best archers in recent years, the most prominent being Satyadev Prasad. I doubt whether Saffronization was the intention ever when the Gurukul authorities came forward to suggest some years ago that they were capable of providing the country with some very talented archers.

Indian Archery thread

Post by sameerph »

I do not know if already there is a thread on archery but I did not find any.
Any way after this news, it certainly desreves a thread. Indian men's team reach the final of world championships for first time . Indian women's team & Tarundeep Rai also performed creditably & would be fighting for the bronze.

Here is the rediff news :-
http://in.rediff.com/sports/2005/jun/24archers.htm

If such progress continues India can certainly expect medal from archery in Olympics.

You beat me to it. I was planning to start a thread. We had a lot of archery discussion during the Olymics time, but I can;t remember if there was a thread we started. I will check and merge this leater, if needed.

Great show so far by the two teams. Go India, beat Korea in the final!!!

There is an archery thread at Sports-India. :D

Jay, can you merge the two threads, please. I messed up when I tried to merge two threads last time and I have lost confidence in my abilities. :kookoo:

Impressive performance by the Indian archers. Is this the first time India has won a team medal at the Archery World Championships?

Archery

Post by PKBasu »

Fantastic achievement by the Indian archers. We have been on the verge of producing world-class archers for over a decade now -- starting with Limbu Ram. The terrific achievement of winning the team silver at the world championships is a terrific emblem of the progress a large number of our archers have made. And the women have steadily improved. Marvellous to see systematic hard work and administrative effort begin paying off handsomely.

These were the qualifier scores. After the elimination rounds, the India men had finished a very creditable fourth and the women had finsihed sixth.
