I didn’t realise that Anderson Peters was injured in an altercation and will be missing diamond league finals happening in Zurich today. I thought he skipped the last diamond league meet in Luasanne to prepare for finals.
Anderson altercation

So Neeraj will be starting as favourite for Finals

Very solid performance from Neeraj. He had the top 3 throws in the competition, so was a dominant winner in the final.

Yea he completed the formality with another of his staple 88 ish throw and brings a cup (for a change not a medal) to decorate his cabinet. "There is a saying Fortune favors the Brave" which can be attributed to Neeraj's bold decision of going for a surgery in 2019 barely enough to recover for Olympics (in spite of knowing he could have continued throwing up to Olympics with the niggle) if they were to start at original schedule. But Covid happened and gave him the time needed for full recovery. It's not only Stars which align for his best outcome, but when he competes usually other champion throwers some how miss the competitions or perform their worst when it matters. What ever it is Neeraj continues to build up an impressive profile with diverse trophies and medals.

I think more than anything else it is his consistency. Other people show huge variation in their performance. So unless someone is very jot he is likely to win. And also even if he does not win he'll atleast medal with his consistency.

Jyoti Yarraji clocks 12.82 secs in the 100m hurdles in open nationals and creates a new National Record. She becomes the first Indian to go below 13 sec in 100M hurders and is only second among Asians in the top lists for this year behind a Japanese. So, a medal at Asian games is certainly a strong possibility, gold also within reach.

P. T. Usha has been elected president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) today. Following the expiry of the deadline for nominations today (Sunday) Usha was the only candidate for president. This is the first time an Olympian, an accomplished athlete at that, has been chosen to head the IOA. The elections are scheduled for December 10 as approved and ordered by the Supreme Court. It was not known immediately how many others had filed nominations for rest of the posts. From the looks of it, sportspersons would be expected to dominate the IOA Executive.

^^^ Wow that is great news. But does she have the abilities to survive all the politics and manage the IOA?

Yes, that is a worry Jay. Since there would be a CEO to run the office instead of the Secretary-General, Usha can hope to have a smoother management without frictions between the top two officials of the IOA (as it happened with Batra and Mehta in the outgoing regime). Too much expectations can weigh her down a bit and the dependence on the Govt can be productive as well as damaging in the longer run. The Asian Games next year, if it happens, would be her first real test.

Let us wish her well. She has always been an honest and decent person. Go Usha!

How far the girl my uncle told me about in 1978 as a 14 year old who ate half of the ice cream at the Milma booth at the Kollam national junior athletic meet has come! Now an MP and the IOA president too... (My uncle was the Kollam head for the state dairy development board running that booth and he was in awe about the girl who would run miles ahead of everybody on track and then even faster to the free ice cream booth!)

Even more important, is she a good administrator? Does she have a track record of doing things at the state level or national level at a smaller scale? She knows how to run because of her muscles, etc. She knows what it takes to win and be world class. Or maybe knew. Has she coached people to heights? I am not so sure this is so great. But, given the bottom-feeders who run our sports, this may be a better thing than garbage. Here's hoping she can actually change things.

Outside of Javelin, these look like difficult marks for the Indians. Perhaps, the 3000 steeplechase and long jump are the others which are reasonably. Toor will throw 21.50 in Belarus. The rest will have to make it on world rankings.
