Re: Indian Athletics Thread ...
Rohit Yadav also qualified for the finals in men's javelin with the 10th best throw and Paul qualified for the triple jump final with the 12th best.
No medals from them, but pretty good by Indian standards.
I haven't checked but would think that 6 finalists is an Indian record!

Re: Indian Athletics Thread ...
From the lot that went to Eugene, and looking at Asian Games standards,
Neeraj obviously is a crazy gold medal favourite in Asia, Rohit Yadav and Annu Rani would likely medal at bronze.
Avinash Sable should win gold in steeple but he has never won a big event
Sreeshankar will likely medal at bronze
Paul would likely medal at silver and India likely getting the bronze as well
Nothing special from this perspective given we won 8 golds in athletics at the 2018 Asian Games - I was expecting more when I started this exercise.

Re: Indian Athletics Thread ...
Well, there are many others ( like for say womens 400M) where our athletes are top in Asia but did not even qualify for world championships. So, we may still top that last Asiad tally in 2023 Asiad.
As of now for CWG which is is in few days time, we had only 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze in athletics this time. Apart from mens javelin, we seem to have a pretty good chance of gold this time in mens long jump and triple jump, some chance in womens javelin too. We should surely have a better tally this time around.

Yes, there are events in which we aren't world class, like womens 400m, all the 4x400 relays (W, M, and Mixed), women's heptathlon, random throwers (e.g., No Mark or groin injury Toor) where we might win Asiad medals (even gold).

Re: Indian Athletics Thread ...
Peters of Grenada was the top qualifier also with his only attempt with Neeraj second. Webber of Germany also had a 87+ throw in his only attempt. These three look like the best and hopefully Neeraj will emerge as the best of the best!

Thanks, Sufyan. I do not see any fencing thread. So, creating one and moving this thread there.ornatebrute wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 3:17 am Well we had our best ever outing at the world fencing championships just last week where Bhavani Devi, our best fencer ended at T21.

Annu Rani made the top-8 in the finals so well done to her for doing that for the second World Championships in a row.
Finished 7th so an improvement from 8th in Qatar though slightly missing field.

Yes, good effort by Annu Rani. There were 2 Australians ahead of her here. So, maybe a bronze at CWF is what she is slated for in couple of weeks time. Hope she can do better than that.
Re: Indian Athletics Thread ...
Neeraj so far standing at 2nd position behind Peters who did a 90.46.Neeraj's attempts are X ,82.39,86.37,88.13.
Two more attempts remaining....hope he gets better.
6 the attempt for all finalists going on now. Medal guaranteed...Final attempt a foul. It is Silver now!

Congratulations on the Silver Neeraj! Just by 0.04 over Bronze. The Gold winner was clearly a cut above.
First ever Indian male to win a medal at the World Athletics (and second ever medalist after Anju Bobby George's Bronze in 2003).

^^^ First ever silver at the World Athletics too!
Gosh, only one throw out of 6 was any good today, so he was actually in danger of missing a medal altogether. Thank God for that one throw!

On the expected lines unlike the Olympics where Vetter buckled under pressure. Congrats to Neeraj for being consistent.

Re: Indian Athletics Thread ...
It was a good performance. Anderson Peters was expected to win. He is consistently throwing 90+ this year. Neeraj did well to come back and get into the medals getting a silver. Normally I have seen him come up with a big one initially and then stay in the medal bracket. But this time he had to come from behind. So good performance overall.
