Re: Indian Athletics Thread ...
Really good performance by the Indian teams in both relays to make the Olympics.
In the mens, the last runner came back from 4th to win us the second. Our opening runner had us at second, to perhaps we need to look at other options for the 2nd and 3rd runners. I believe the normal 2nd runner was injured on the previous day, so hopefully he'll be back if his injury was cramping.

Neeraj and Vadelich were top 2 at Tokyo 3 years back and they still seem to be top 2 in the world after 3 years. Today, Vadelich just sneaked ahead, hope Neeraj sneaked ahead at the right time.

Yeah, these two seem to be the most consistent when it comes to the bigger events.

Pretty good effort by Neeraj for his first competition of the year! I think Neeraj will beat the Czech in the Olympics and other big events. Good to see that no one else appears to be emerging…

Re: Indian Athletics Thread ...
Neeraj will be participating in a domestic meet for the first time since long at the Federation cup which starts today at Bhubaneswar.
In the meantime, some encouraging performances in meets abroad- New National Record & PB for KM Deeksha in the Women's 1500m at the Sound Running Track fest with a 4:04::78. The Olympic qualification mark is 4:02:50.
Men's 5000m: Avinash Sable misses the NR & PB mark by just over a second, clocking 13:20:37.
Women's 5000m: Parul Chaudhary misses her Personal best & the NR by a whisker clocking 15:10:69.

Re: Indian Athletics Thread ...
Perhaps you said it too soon Jay!
Jena did 76.31m to finish ninth out of ten throwers. We will have to see whether this slump is going to continue in the Fed Cup that started today.
Apart from Chopra, javelin throwers seem to have hit a tough. Sahil Silwal 77.81 (1st) and Vikrant Malik 75.28 (2nd) in a meet in Slovenia. Malik did 81.68 at Patiala in March. For Silwal this was a season best. He has a PB of 80-plus.

^^^ Actually I was talking about Neeraj and Vadelich. I had not taken Jena seriously at all, but I am glad to know that you feel he has potential to even be considered in a company with Neeraj though!

Re: Indian Athletics Thread ...
I thought you were referring to Chopra and Jena.
As for Jena being of the same calibre, no I never thought he or for that matter any other Indian athlete was in the same class.
But Jena's 2023 performance cannot be sniffed at : Fifth in World championships on debut with a PB (then) of 84.77. Then silver in the Asian Games behind Chopra with a PB of 87.54m.
I can guess the reasons for this spike, as I can of several others among Indian athletes. Yet, if one looks up performances at world level, Jena is right up there (or was), whether we take him seriously or not. He is 53rd on the world all-time lists; Chopra is 24th.
By Indian standards Jena has been an achiever. The only problem for me has been his improvement from 78.93m to 87.54m in the space of about eight months in 2023.

Parvej Khan also continuing to do well in high level collegiate events in the US winning the SEC title in the 1500 meters. However, his timings still seem very average although these are tactical races where he is likely doing just enough to win. He is surprisingly 3rd best in Asia this year in 800m and only 9th best in 1500m which I think is his better event.
