Yes,6th world championships gold for her which is legendary.

Sonia Chahal lost in the final of 57 kg.So, we ended up with 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals.

Olympic weight categories are still to be confirmed. But, as loof now they are proposed to be 51-57-60-69-75. So,Marykom will have to move up to 51 for that as she did when she won her Olympic bronze.Sonia and Lovlina also won medals in the proposed Olympic weight classes.

Should we include these 2 and Marykom in our list of Tokyo medal hopefuls ?

I think will wait a bit for them to produce these results outside India. There is always a home country positive effect in boxing which may have worked here.

Yes, I would wait as well.

Mary also had a lot of positive media coverage with her bid to be a record setter which helps a lot in amateur boxing.

We also of course won a lot of medals the last time we hosted these championships.

BTW Mary was in the last category along with Srikanth and the Indian men's hockey team to begin with.

Did some research and this world champ didn't beat anyone of note in his world championship run.

Unfortunately, as much as I would like to get excited, nowhere near an Olympic medal performance yet.

Amit of course continues to show Olympic potential.

But, he was a still became a world champion, right ? :D So, he would have beaten at least some decent boxers.

Kavinder Bisht also reached the QF at the world championships. So, he seems to have some potential. Lets see if he wins the gold here. Then, we can start taking about Olympics medal winning potential.

We have 7 men and 6 women thru to the SF's here at the Asian boxing championships here in Thailand. So, looks quite a good performance as of now.

4 Indian men and 2 women are thru to the finals of the Asian championships.

Deepak Singh | 49kg
Ashish Kumar | 75kg
Amit Panghal | 52 kg
Kavinder Bisht | 56 kg
Pooja Rani | 81kg
Simranjit Kaur | 64kg

Mens 52, 56, 75 and womens 64 are olympic weight classes. So, those finals would be the ones to watch tomorrow. Kavinder Bisht up against Asian games gold medalists Uzbek Mirazizbek Mirzakhalilov, Amit Panghal who was Asian games gold medalist at 49 kg against South Korean 2017 world championship bronze medalist Kim In Kyu would be the ones to look forward to most.

Nice resurgence by our boxers at the Asian level! Hopefully, 3-4 of them will win gold in the finals. All of these boxers appears to be on the younger side, so they could continue to improve.

In the last Asian boxing championship for men, I think we went 1-1-2 (G-S-B), so this should be a significant improvement with 4 battling for G/S and 3 bronzes for the SF losers.

We end up with 2 Gold, 4 Silver & 7 Bronze Medals overall.

Only Amit Panghal and Pooja Rani could win their bouts today to win golds. As per reports, Deepak Singh was clearly superior to his Uzbek opponent in final but lost by a split decision.

Amit Panghal appears as the clear prospect for an olympic medal in Tokyo while Kavinder Bisht is an outside hope. There is also talk that Vikas Krishan may try to qualify for Tokyo via pro route. He and may be Shiva Thapa may be outside hopes as would be Marykom who did not participate here.

Duryodhan Negi won his prelim bout today in a split decision 4-1. So 3/3 in the prelims so far.

Tomorrow's the first big day of action with the action moving to the last 32. Amit and Ashish who had a bye have their first bouts and Manish has his second.

Brijesh also lost, while Kavinder had a hard fought win over a Chinese boxer. Amit, Kavinder and Ashish were our best 3, hence would be surprised to see any more qualifiers into round of 16. Was expecting a few more. Disappointed given the pre-tournament hype.
