Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Sumit lost to the Russian. I saw the last round. It seemed that the Russian got some clearly good punches. He won 3-0.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Yes, the Russian was clearly technically the better boxer although Sumit had an advantage of height but he was beaten fair and square.
Sumit still has a chance for the quota though. There are 5 quotas available in his category. So, if the Russian wins the next 2 bouts and goes on to win gold, Sumit will get the quota.
We will have to wait for a couple of days to see if that happens.
In the meantime, Devendro will fight his SF tomorrow and he will need a win to qualify for Rio.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Missed the fight but a little disappointed that Sumit was beaten fair and square. In the 2011-2013 time frame, it seemed that he had the potential to be a medal contender in 2016 but it seems injuries have derailed his progress and he's clearly not a medal prospect even if he does make it as the 5th qualifier.sameerph wrote:Yes, the Russian was clearly technically the better boxer although Sumit had an advantage of height but he was beaten fair and square.

At this point, Shiva Thapa and Vikas Krishan seem like our best medal bets (they are both ranked #6 in events which have 4 medal winners).

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
True, Shiva Thapa did win a bronze in the 2015 world championships where the level of competition would be same as Rio. So, he is our best medal contender in boxing.
Vikash Krishnan lost in the QF there, just 1 bout away from a medal. So, he too is a realistic medal contender.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Both Manoj and Devendro settled for bronze losing their SFs. No problem for Manoj but heartbreak for Devendro losing out of an Olympic berth.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
I did not see this. But, have seen the reports that Devendro completely dominated the bout and all 3 judges gave 2 of the 3 rounds to the Spaniard. That is what I said earlier that the new system of scoring makes the result too subjective.
Also the Russian boxer who beat Sumit yesterday gave a walkover in the QF and so Sumit's chances for Rio are over. This is a result of another silly rule. Those who have already qualified for Rio will have no interest in winning their subsequent bouts. So, fate of others should not be dependent on them.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Looks like Vikas Krishan also gave a w/o in the SF perhaps because he doesn't have much to gain after qualification.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
So we end with 3 qualifiers? And we had 8 qualifiers (out of 13 weight classes) last time? Quite depressing.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
I think the entry of the pro-boxers is the main cause of it since it bit into the no. of qualifiers.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Yes, that is one of the causes. But, I think the bigger reason is our administrative mess. Due to that our boxers have not been able to get sufficient international exposure in last 4 years. Otherwise, I am sure we would have got at least 3-4 more to qualify. The biggest disappointment has been not being able to get any women boxers to qualify. The best chances of medal are there due to smaller field.
There is one more opportunity for a few Indian boxers at the qualifying event for professional boxers in Venezuela in early July.
According to reports, 3 Indian boxers- Gaurav Bhiduri, Neeraj Goyat and Dilbagh Singh have signed up for this event.
Is there any way to get Devendro to get eligible for this event ? He twice came very close to qualifying and missed and deserves one more chance to qualify.

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Yes, the number of qualifiers is quite low. Ideally, Mary Kom and one other woman as well as perhaps Devendro and Sumit Sangwan should have been there as they would have at least been long shot medal chances (with Mary Kom having the best chance).

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
Another 3 Indians fight for a Rio berth in APB/WSB Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Jul 3 - 8 in Vargas, Venezuela.
They are Bidhuri(52kg), Neeraj(69kg) & Dilbagh(81kg).

Re: Indian Boxing Thread
There are incredibly small player fields in these olympics qualifiers for pro boxers. For instance, in 49 kgs, there are only 7 competitors and 3 will get quota. When Devendro was robbed in the last olympic qualifiers there were as many as 30 boxers and only 2 qualifiers. I wish we had more boxers competing here.
Our boxers need to win 2 bouts to qualify. I hope we get at least 1 qualifier from here.

Both Gaurav Bidhuri & Dilbagh Singh crashes out in R1. Only Neeraj left in the fray.
