Good performance by Indian boxing team at the Asian Boxing Championships at Tashkent. We won 2 silver ( Shiva Thapa and Sumit Sangwan) and 2 bronze medals ( Amit Pangal and Vikas Krishnan). 3 other Indian boxers qualified for world boxing championships after they won the box off after losing the quarter finals.

Overall, following 7 boxers qualified for world boxing championships at London in August.

Amit Pangal(49kg)
Kavinder Bisht(52kg)
Shiva Thapa (60kg)
Manoj Kumar(69kg)
Vikas Krishanan(75kg)
Sumit Sangwan(91kg)
Satish Kumar(+91kg)

This is 1 more than the last world championships. It does seem that Indian boxing is slowly getting back on track after the association mess was resolved.

Sameer, it is Vikas Krishan (Yadav). Weird thing was that he did not turn up for the weigh-in for the semis and thus his South Korean opponent got a walkover. BFI is asking him to show cause for why he did that. I suppose he turned up for the bronze medal match and salvaged a medal.

So now a foreign coach for or women boxers, Frenchman Stephane Cottalorda.

Indian women boxers get first foreign coach
Cottalorda, an AIBA three-star coach, will be in charge of the women's pugilists till December 2018.Over the course of nearly one and half years, his two biggest assignments will be the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. He will be joined by Italian coach Raffaele Bergamasco, in charge of the youth women boxers.

The Boxing Federation of India handed men's foreign coach Santiago Nieva a contract till December 2020 same as Bergamasco, while Cottalorda will be in charge till December 2018. "All the three coaches have been recommended by the AIBA. The president had spoken to AIBA officials during a meet held here in New Delhi last year. All three are AIBA 'three-star' coaches and have plenty of experience. The Sports Authority of India and the sports secretary finalised the contract of all three foreign coaches yesterday," a BFI official told.

8 Indian boxers are participating in the world championships at Hamburg, Germany.

3 of the Indians are seeded - Vikas Krishan (3rd), Shiva Thapa (4th) and Sumit Sangwan (6th). All 3 of are getting first round bye.

Out of other 5 boxers - 4 got first round wins - Amit, Kavinder Bisht, Gaurav Bhiduri and Manoj Kumar. In 91+Kg, Satish Kumar lost to a seeded Azerbeijani boxer.

Overall, 7 of our boxers are in last 16. Need 2 wins to assure of a medal. Amit, Gaurav, Vikas and Sumit will fight their R16 bouts today.

Wow, did these Indians get such gaudy rankings? I don't recall them winning much in the last few years at the world level...

I was also surprised and it seems the our guys were indeed overs seeded as both Vikas Krishan and Sumit Sangwan lost in the QF to their British and Australian opponents respectively. Thankfully Amit Panghal and Gaurav Bhiduri upset their seeded opponents from Ukraine and Equador to salvage something for us today.

Amit and Gaurav are now in QF's, 1 win away from medal.

Shiva Thapa, Manoj Kumar and Kavinder Bisht fight their R16 bouts today.

Well, our best hope Shiva Thapa had to pull out today due to food poisoning. Manoj Kumar lost his bout a Venezuelan boxer.

But, surprisingly in 52 Kg, Kavinder Bisht upset third seeded Algerian boxer to reach the QF. :D

So, despite our experiences boxers, Vikash, Shiva and Manoj Kumar we have 3 boxers in QF. These are the QF match-ups.

At World boxing Championships, Hamburg, Germany

[QF] 49 kg- Amit Panchal (IND) vs. (2) Hasanboy Dusmatov (UZB)

[QF] 52 kg - Kavinder Bisht (IND) vs. Inkyu Kim (KOR)

[QF] 56 kg. -Gaurav Bhiduri (IND) vs. Bilel Mhamdi (TUN)

Hope we get at least 1 medal here.

Good to see 3 in the QFs. All 3 are in the lighter weight classes where we tend to have better chances although some of our middle weights have also done well in the recent past. Getting at least 1 medal will be a good sign of progress with newer boxers who could do well in the future...

And Gaurav Bhiduri ensures our first medal in this world championships as he beats the Tunisian boxer to reach SF. :D He won 3-0 as 3 judges scored in his favour and for 2 judges the scores were tied.

Earlier Amit Panchal put up a good fight against Olympic gold medalists from Uzbekistan before losing. Although all 5 judges gave the win to Uzbek, the commentators were saying that Amit had won 1 of the 3 rounds of the bout which is not bad against an olympic champion.

At World boxing Championships, Hamburg, Germany

[QF] 49 kg- Amit Panchal (IND) l. (2) Hasanboy Dusmatov (UZB) 0-5

[QF] 56 kg. -Gaurav Bhiduri (IND) d. Bilel Mhamdi (TUN) 3-0

Gaurav is our 4th ever world championship medalist after Vijender (2009), Vikas Krishnan (2011) and Shiva Thapa (2015). All 3 were bronze medals.

Kavinder Bisht will have his bout later today. Can he surprise with a medal too ?

The Bisht didn't win - losing 4-0 (with a tie on one judge's scorecard). Hopefully, medalist Gaurav Bhiduri can go one further here to get a gold or silver...
