Last time there was only one qualification slot available through Asian championships, not one each in men and women, if I recall correctly. Have they changed rules this time?

I checked and last time we had 2 weightlifters competing in London. Not quite sure if they both came thru Asian championships though.

I checked again and found that one male and one female competitor can indeed qualify from the continental qualification meet. Thus India has ensured two competitors, one male and one female. But unlike what several reports are suggesting, I think there cannot be any more slots based on Olympic ranking list. That invitation place is only for countries which do not have a qualified athlete through World Championships (2014 plus 2015) or continental qualification meets. If by chance the eight individual ranking qualification slots are not filled up then there could be a chance through the 'redistribution of unused quotas' rules depending on where our lifters could be placed in June according to the ranking list.

She is not the favorite but she has a chance to medal. Girl from Thailand who lifted 200Kg is the fav. After that we have JPN hiroke( 194 ) and VIE Voung ( 193). Mirabai lifted 192 at the trails.

And maybe if some of those others are on spinach, we may be able to bounce up.

After the badminton draw and the Narsingh fiasco, this is a pleasant surprise for our medal prospects. My expected value for our medal count is back to 3-4.

Chinese withdrew from 48 kgs, weight category as there are restrictions on total no. of competitors in weightlifting. So, it looks they view lesser of a chance of winning a gold in this category than others. Thai girl seems to be the favourite for the gold. 4-5 others all appear close in 194-190 range. If Mirabai Chanu can improve couple of Kgs, from the 192 kgs. which she lifted in trials , there is real chance of a medal for her.

Old people like me take 1 medal at a time. No firm expectations from anyone. Maybe Rai in shooting. Expect 2-3 medals total. Will be happy if we get more.

All these quotas and restrictions are useless. They should just let the top "k" players go out and play for as large a "k" as can be scheduled/paid for.

Mirabai Chanu becomes only the 2nd Indian after Karnam Malleshwari to win a GOLD at the Weightlifting World Championships ... Her total lift of 194kg is also the new National Record.

After the Snatch round, Thai girl Sukcharoen was leading by one kilogram after lifting 86 kg, but Chanu lifted 109 kg in the Clean and Jerk, those were two kilograms more than Thai girl for winning a Gold.

At the World Weightlifting Championships 2017, Anaheim, United States

Women's 48 kg
Gold - Saikhom Mirabai Chanu(IND) (85+109) 194 kg
Silver - Thunya Sukcharoen (THA) (86+107) 193 kg
Bronze - Ana Iris Segura (COL) (81+101) 182 kg

Wow, that is great news. Winning a gold in a world championship in an Olympic event is excellent. Mirabai Chanu was considered an outside contender medal at Rio but she faltered there. Now, she makes it up for this with this effort today.

I am sorry to ask, but how can I not? She is not a vegetarian or anything, is she? If not, then this is indeed some great news.
