Absolutely, I agree.  I was saying that the previous decision taken after a bribe was consumed was crooked.

Two more weightlifter from India Sukhen Dey and Anup Deo Toppo are suspended for two years by the IWF for testing positive at the IWF continental clubs grand prix in Malaysia.

This problem seems to be rampant in our weight lifting circuit. Association has to take some strong steps. It is quite embarrassing to be testing positive on such frequent basis.

OK, we are back down to earth, where we should be, without the right spinach. So it seems to me. Jay

Indian women wightlifers win the team title in the Asian junior weightlifting

Indian women win team title

We managed to get ahead of China is something. Are we getting talent back in Weightlifting ?

With our past record in relation to doping in this sport, everything needs to be viewed with suspicion though.

Good result by our juniors.

However, it would be worth following their progression because our junior results are also often tainted by birth certificate issues...

Indian women weightlifters, without the spinach, is an oxymoron. Middle school girls in the west would kick grown Indian women's butt if they ever got into a tiff. Weightlifting championship is a joke. That being said, I am not very aware of the physical prowess of the East Indian girls/women (e.g. from Nagaland, Mizoram, etc.). I am aware that some of our women boxers/weightlifters are from that region. So, unless this junior team is comprised mostly of these gifted team members, I don't have much faith in the results.

In a creditable achievement, Indian women weightlifters won the team title in the just-concluded Asian junior championships at Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan ahead of powerhouses like China and Korea.

The junior women lifters had won seven medals (three silver and four bronze) to accumulate 463 points and top the standings. China collected 403 points to finish second, followed by Kyrgyzstan (359), Thailand (329) and Korea (297) in the July 2-8 event.

The junior men finished fourth in the final standings with 408 points after winning 10 medals (four silver and six bronze). The Indian team, consisting of six men and seven women, also won the biggest ever haul of medals in this event by bagging 17 medals. The earlier best was 14 medals in the 2005 Asian junior championships at Tashkent, Uzbekistan. — PTI
Here is the actual content of the article. So, we topped the table without winning any gold medals? Zero as in nada, zilch, ....? That is pretty hilarious.

For the record, our junior men did not win any gold either, but their fourth places makes sense in this context. But, six men won ten medals. Obviously they cannot be in multiple weight categories, so it must be multiple events (snatch, jerk, ???) in a given weight category for several of the team members.

Could our resident sleuths find the progression results of the aforementioned 2005 Asian junior championship medalists at Tashkent? That would give us a pretty good idea of the relevance of these latest results.

Most of middle school guys in New Zealand,Australia and England can kick the butt of an average Indian adult too, if ever they get into a fight :D . But that size advantage didnt help them in Commonwealth Games wrestling as our wrestlers humiliated them. In a country a like India where half the population is under poverty line and sports as culture is not ingrained much in our lifestyle, the size of an average Indian will considerably less than that of their western counterparts. But that doesn't mean we can't produce elite athletes who given the right nutrition and physical training can match international standards.

Also in weight lifting we have weight classes which negate the size advantage. That is an average Russian or American girl would whoop the butt of an Indian girl in a fight due to their size advantage, but it would be a pretty even fight between a 55 kg Indian women and 56 Kg American girl.

As you said, the most of weightlifters comes from AndhraPradesh, Orissa(most of them tribals) and North-East(mainly Manipur, but now Nagaland and Arunachal pradesh are also producing good lifters). And as far as i know ,our wins are mostly in the lower weights. Beating China(who has done tremendously well at last Olympics in Woman weightlifting) at least in point levels is great job done by our weightlifters who have been always marred by doping controversies.

I would disagree about England for sure. Very unfit nation for the most part.

However, an average Dutch middle-schooler would easily be the best athlete in any of our high schools.

By virtu of finishing among top 6 among non-qualified nations at the Asian weightlfiting championships recently, India have qualified 1 quota each in men and women for Rio olympics.

No chance of a medal but perhaps an outside one in the womens 48 kg for Mirabai Chanu who lifted 190 kg. to be seventh in Asian championships. Almost all the top 10 or so women in this weight category are Asians. So, she is essentially 7th in the world based on this performance. Will need an improvement by about 5 kgs. and can dream of a surprise medal.
