I know. They are quick to critique the performance without knowing the facts. The personal bests, their world rankings etc. But then again, it is much easier to be critical and create controversy, and we might have been guilty of that in the past on the boards as well though we are not truly journalists, without doing the homework rather than write a truly informed opinion.

Women's 75 kg weight class:

1. SHANG Shichun China Snatch 120 kg; clean and jerk 153 kg; Total 272.5 kg
2. RAMADAN Nahla Egypt 117 kg; 145 kg; Total 262.5 kg
3. RUZHINSKA Slaveyka Bulgaria 112.5 kg; 140 kg; Total 252.5 kg
12. MALLESWARI Karnam India 105 kg; 130 kg; Total 235 kg

The Indian captain moved up from the 69 kg weight class to the 75 kg weight class and found herself unable to compete well with the best in the new weight class. Her personal best is 245 kg and in the 69 kg weight class she is ranked 6th.

Karnam MALLESWARI weighed 69.23 kg and was a mere 1/2 pound above the weight limit for the 69 kg weight class! However, with her today's performance she would have finished 9th in the 69 kg weight class.

Women's team classification:

1. China points 159; # of athletes qualified for Olympics 4
2. Thailand 135; 4
3. Bulgaria 123; 4
4. Russia 108; 4
5. India 104; 4 :D
6. Ukraine 87; 4
7. Colombia 86; 4
8. Indonesia 84; 4
9. South Korea 84; 4
10. Turkey 77; 3

In the men's events India has not qualified any weight lifters. :(

I am not sure how the points system works and so I am unable to understand how India accumulated so many points even though none of our lifters earned any medals.

Good to see 4 women weightlifters qualified for olympics. But, now we know the standings of our girls and if these girls perform upto their best still a medal is not in sight. So, what's up in terms of plan for next one year? Whether our weightlifters are a real pet to compete for medals in olympics next year or not?

Pretty sobering and, to me, a bit of an unpleasant surprise to find our women so far behind the best in the world. The best ones probably need to lose a bit of weight and compete in lower weight categories...

Yes Basu, you were right in saying our lifters have not improved over the years.

In 1995, Malleswari was doing very well and was ranked No.1 in the world. If women's event was introduced in Atlanta Olympics, she would have surely won the gold. But I was happy she sustained herself for four years to bag a medal at Sydney. Even in Sydney she would have got a gold but our coaches (infighting between foreing and indian coaches) messed up the card and went for a sure bet of a medal instead of trying for a gold. But then if she had missed the gold, she would have missed a medal totally.

I don't think any of our lifters will be in the picture for Athens. A big loss is Sailaja Pujari, who is now banned for drugs. She had the potential. Prasmita too is young and should develop as a good lifter with proper guidance

Our women had a lot of above 12th (in top 12) positions in individual events and so gathered as manypoints.

Now Indian Weighlifting federation has the choice to select four women for the Oly. It would be interesting to watch their choice.

before sydney there was a lot of criticism after Sanamacha Chanu was selected ahead of Kunju.

Thanks David. Unfortunately, the picture that emerges is of a precipitous decline in women's weightlifting in India. We need to find new stars quickly, or our chances of a medal in this sport will be practically nil.

Good night. I am "Made" in India, Born in Mozambique, and I live in Portugal. Congratultions to Kunjurani Devi and her colleagues. I am very pride of you. Indian newspapers are sold to british-cricket. Those "men"??? (are them really??, because they are always fear of the colonialists -all people can read books about psychology-) are chicken. VICTORY to BHARAT. VICTORY to all Indian People. Is enough read nonsenses about this Country. No money, no sport. Money - Sport. This is the realitty! I hope see the Indian Football Team, in thr next World Championship. God Bless You People of Nectar.

Yes, Simple is very young and has a lot of potential.

I only posted women's results because I felt they have a better chance at the Olympics than men. But I have posted the World Records for every weight so that we can see how much we need to improve.

However, the best of the lot did not take part in the Nationals as they were undergoing training at the camp in Patiala.

There was a newspaper report yesterday where Kunjarani basically said flat-out that there WILL BE MEDALS in weightlifting at Athens for us. Hope she is right!
