Jeremy Lalrinnunga, the young prodigy who won gold in youth olympics last year also participated in the above competition and won a silver.
The 16-year-old boy lifted 131kg in snatch and 157kg in clean and jerk for a total of 288kg. However, Lalrinnunga was far behind the gold medal winner, Deni of Indonesia who lifted 303kg (132+171).

In comparison the weight he lifted last year in oct for his gold is 124+150 = 274kg.

Big improvement in a short time for Jeremy. He'll have to be over 320+ for medal contention in his weight class, so he has a long way to go at the senior levels. Given that he's improved by 14 kgs in 3 months, perhaps he can get close in another year...

I have not observed it but he has actually gone up in weight categories from 62kg to 67kg.

In the Asian Weightlifting championships in Ningbo,China, Meerabai Chanu lifted her personal best of overall weight of 199Kg but narrowly missed out on medal to a Chinese lifter who lifted the same weight on tie break. Another Chinese won gold with a lift of 208 kg. and North Korean Asian gold medalist Ri Song-gum clinched the silver with a lift of 200 kg. ( just 1 kg above 199).

These Asian women lifters are the best in the world and only 1 Chinese can compete at Tokyo olympics. So, Meerabai is still very much in line for a medal at Tokyo. Also she has started completing just 6 months back after a long injury lay off. So, her coaches have set a target of 210 kg for her at Tokyo which will surely win a medal with a chance for gold too.

At the same event, 16 year old Jeremy Lalrinnunga broke youth world record with a total lift of 297 kgs in 67 kgs. Of course, Jeremy still has to lift 20 kgs or so more to be in any medal reckoning at world level. But, he has improved 23 kgs in last 6 months since youth olympics.

Realistically though he can aim to be in that range at 2024 olympics when he will be around 21.

Thanks for the update.

I think Jeremy will need to improve by 25kg to be in medal contention imo.

Mirabai finished 4th in the 49kg.

She lifted 201kg (87+114)

The Chinese winner did 212, Chinese runner-up did 211 and the North Korean bronze winner did 203. 5th placed Colombian did 188.

With only one Chinese allowed at the Olympics, no medal for Mirabai here but she is looking good for a bronze in Tokyo with a small chance at a silver. Just needs to stay fit, healthy and not get caught taking spinach.

Think we can move her to the top category in our projections.

If I am not wrong, she went up a weight category. Is it because the previous category was non-Olympic or did she have problems with weight like Vinesh?
Anyways a commendable effort, also a new National record I think.

Also only 4 weightlifters are allowed per country between 7 weight categories. China has good weightlifters in other categories too and in last olympics they skipped this weight category of 49 kgs. I have not looked at their other weightlifters but there is a chance that they may decide to skip this category this time too. Then, Mirabai's chances of medal go up.

As Thailand is out and if China pulls out of this category, medal is assured for us. Only color to be decided. But considering sure gold chance, China mayn't let this category go, as others have higher competition

I can't see China pulling out of this category when they have the two best (by a mile) weightlifters.

There is an Indonesian who we shouldn't completely ignore, Sri Wahyuni Agustiani won the silver lifting 195kg at the Asian Games last year; weight category was 48kg then. She can realistically expect to lift another 4kg at a personal weight of 49 so that brings her to 199.

Mirabai should still win bronze as long as she lifts 201+ in Tokyo.

Jeremy is up tomorrow.

This is one of the stupidest things I can think of in sports.

Jeremy lifted 296 which is one less than his competition best of 297 from April. I was hoping to see him get to 300+ by now as he rapidly improves.

Another 35kg gain by Tokyo is impossible so 2024 will be his time.

Needs to work on clean&jerk which is more of a struggle for him.

Just analysing results of China and North Korea in womens weightlifting championships which ended today. This is from the perspective to see if they are likely to skip 49 kg which is Meerabai Chanu's weight category. ( since a country can field weightlifters only in 4 of the 7 weight categories in Tokyo olympics)

China won golds in 49 kgs,55 kgs,64 kgs,87 kgs and 87+kg. i.e 5 of the 7 olympic weight categories. Their weight difference with next best competitor from another country in those 5 were - 49-8kgs, 55-13kgs,64-10kgs,87-9kg, 87+-14kg. So, it is tough and go for China between 49 kg and 87 kg.

North Korea won gold only in 76 kgs. So, they will surely send a lifter there. 59 they got a silver but with just a Kg difference with the Taipei lifter they have good chance of gold.in 87 they have absolutely sure of silver with a 17 kg difference with the next and a light chance to fight for the gold ( a 9 kg difference ) in 64 they have sure silver with a huge 11 kg difference with the next lifter. Whereas in 49 kgs their lifter was just 4 kgs ahead if Meerabai which not an insurmountable difference.

So, there is very real chance that North Korea will give a miss to 49 kgs and a small chance that China may miss that category too. But, I think China decides to give this category a miss, North Korea will field a lifer here. Either way there is good chance of Meerabai for a silver in this category at Tokyo. Just needs to stay fit till Tokyo.

I know you provide so much analysis. And the raw differences are a measure. But, wrt the 49 kg and the 87 kg weight differentials, what is the % difference. Assuming say, the 87kg lifts 250 kg, then 241 is closer than the 49 kg lifting 200kg and 192kg. The 87 kg then becomes 96.4% vs the 49 kg becomes 96%. That is a larger gap in the 49kg. Of course, I made up the numbers. If you have the numbers handy the % difference would be more useful. But, they will also look at the consistency of their lifters and maybe the averages of a few meets and not just one meet. I am not asking you to do all that math. But, if you can let us know the % or the raw numbers, we can get a better feel wrt China.
