Indian Basketball Thread ...

Post by BSharma »

India has a long way to go in basketball to become one of the top nations in this sport.

At the 22nd Men’s Asian Basketball Championship at Harbin, China, the home team humbled India 117-62.  India has lost the first two matches and next plays Japan and Lebanon.

The winner of the championship will qualify for the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Indian basket ball team over the last two decades have had very limited exposure to the international circuit. Basketball is not a rich sport (in India) and we have not had a international tournament in india to my limited knowledge for a long time (i may be wrong ). I guess that's why this could be a surprising news. But we have some very good players, with lot of international exposure, we could go places.

I guess there is another qualifying tournament (beginning ofnext year), when some more teams from Asia can qualify..

India beat Qatar today to remain unbeaten in the group.

They topped the group and entered the knockout qf. They are likely to meet Kazakh and if it happens they can even go to semis.

Let's see.

I think it is a remarkable show by the Indians to make to the last 8 even at the Asian
level. A top-4 finish will be even more remarkable.

A top four finish will be very difficult. But why not. The boys are playing a brilliant game and if they continue like this they can achieve their target (semis)

There are 16 teams and during the league we already qualified for the top two groups. The top 8 teams play for 1-8 places while the bottom 8 play for 9-16 places.

Now if we can beat two teams in we can play for the semifials.

I forgot to post about the huge controversy.

The championship was supposed to be held at Sree Kanteerava Stadium (National Games complex) but the wooden flooring for the new courts did not arrive in time due to the truckers strike.
Now it is being played at Rajiv Gandhi Indoor stadium in the suburbs. Though the stadium (with wooden floor) is new the facilities are not international standards and the electronic scoreboards are not working. International Federation stipulates air-conditioning for events of this stature (ABC)
Hopefully, the last three days...it will be shifted to Kanteerava. But we have to see how the players will adapt to the new courts.

Delayed post!

The tourney finally went off well. And the last couple of days they were indeed held at Kanteerava Stadium where the brand new flooring was installed.

India finished 7th. Iran won the title and S Korea finished second.

India is currently playing in the FIFA Stankovic Cup in Taiwan, featuring some of the best sides in Asia. Today, India upset South Korea and has a chance to reach the semifinals. Center S. Robinson once again carried the team scoring 30 something points. He is proving to be one of the best players in Asia. He currently plays abroad for club team Farsh Mashad of Iran. They are currently undefeated and in first place in group B of the Iran Superleague.

Even though Robinson is listed as a center, he is actually a small forward and
at best a power forward. He is around 6" 6"", I believe. He is the only Indian
player I have seen who can dunk the ball athletically. I do not count the seven
footers like Panda of yester years as dunkers ( I don't know if he could!).

The only thing it takes to do well in Asian basketball is one decent 7 footer. Right now only China and Iran have them. Our team needs to find another good big man to play in the middle alongside Robinson.
