is this sport growing internationally? i remember in bangkok it had been added to the asian games

Yes..but limited. Few Asian countries with limited following.

It is however one uniquely interesting game with certain athletic requirements that really has no parallels in world sports, and for the same reason it is one that *could* potentially become very popular if marketed well. Who will do such marketing, I don't know.

I read an article recently that Kabaddi is getting popular in Canada, after Cricket and a Kabaddi stadium of 20,000 capacity is coming in 2 years in Brampton.

I did not know that Canada is so good in kabaddi. I have not read the links posted in this forum but was the Canadian team composed of people of south-east asia origin?

I remember in the early 1970s the Delhi School kabaddi championship was won by the school run by the US embassy. These American children were good in playing "American football" and knew how to tackle players like they do in football. The Indian children were afraid of being tackled fiercely by the American children.

yeah.. kabaddi is popularaized mostly with peoples of south asian origin only.

Thanks Kathir for the information about Kabaddi and the web site. How popular is kabaddi in Malaysia?

After viewing the photos of kabaddi players from Canada (and ?UK) it appears that they follow the old Indian tradition of playing barefoot on grass or clay courts.

At the last Asian Games the Japanese kabaddi players wore special shoes, and there was talk about holding international matches on special mats similar to wretling mats.

What do you all think will happen to Indian kabaddi if the rules are changed to benefit players from countries other than India, Pakistan and Bangladesh? Field hockey became a different sport once it was moved to astroturf. Can it happen to kabaddi also?

kabaddi is a serious game among the peoples of indian origin in malaysia. Kabaddi Association of Malaysia promoting the game, conducting tournaments at national & international levels.

....last year hosted inagural Malaysian open participated by six countries
..... Asian championship for this year will be hosted from 18-20 Oct'03 (indoors), the participating countries including india, thailand, srilanka, iran, bangladesh.

as far as the special mat or gears are concerned definitely there must be some serious effect.... but no idea and also no latest news on implementing any such things..... can anyone enlight on this?

hey, if the qualification norm changed based on population, kabaddi will qualify indeed!!!

This is web page of a Japanese kabaddi club 'Esplanade kabaddi club'. Looks like these club team participating tournaments in India. Information of matches played and photograps including indian players are seen. But, this is in Japaness script and if anyone know Japanese can read and provide us more info...

I read in some other article that Kabaddi is included in Hirosima City University games. It is nice to know that Japan peoples are interested in kabaddi...

interesting to observe that for the sport to be Olympic sport it should be played in 75 countries and ..

Baseball is a demonstration or regular sport in olympics . If that is the case, I am surprised it is played in 75 countries.

I think if Kabaddi becomes a global sport, indians would find the going tough. Imagine the US team composed of all the 300 pound lineman that they have in NFL. it would requireall the guys in the team to prevent him from crossing over and it may still not be sufficient ..

The Malaysian kabaddi association web site reports the following;

The AAKF (Asian Aemtuer Kabaddi Federation) congress adopted the usage of synthetic surface as well as the introduction of the bonus line as of October 06, 2003.

sure....that the coming asian championship tournament in malaysia (Oct 18-20) would be conducted in synthetic surface. The million dollar question is... when will india develop such facilities?!!!!!!
