Re: Indian Volleyball (2012 Asian Junior Championships)
India playing China currently which is the last group match for both the teams, just won the first game 25-21
In the end we finished it in straight sets, thats a pretty good
India def China 25-21,25-23,25-18
so with 3 wins, 1 loss we finished second in the group behind Turkey (yet to play the final match but rankings wont change). Possible Round of 16 match against Japan..
A2 vs B3
Last time we played them in the semifinal of the asian championship in 2012 and lost after winning the first 2 games...

Re: Indian Volleyball (2012 Asian Junior Championships)
So, we will finish 2nd in the pool behind Turkey. We will get a 3rd place team from another pool in the final 16 now (I think pool B -- in which case it should be Japan, barring upsets today). It will be a knockout from here on, it seems. Anyway, a very good job in the pool, after losing the first 4 sets of the tournament, and then turning it around to win 9 of the next 10 sets.

Nice to see us beating China in a sport other than cricket, tennis (men's), women's badminton, and hockey.

Re: Indian Volleyball (2012 Asian Junior Championships)
Good to see a strong performance by the Indian youth team in world level event. Making the top-8 in a sport as widely played as volleyball would be strong achievement.
IIRC, our junior teams have done well in the past as well but that success has not generally translated into the senior teams play.

Sorry to be cynical, but we are fairly likely to be playing overage players.

Re: Indian Volleyball (2012 Asian Junior Championships)
Probably not much. I believe that problem has substantially reduced in recent years. This is 21-and-under anyway, and the age effect is a little less at this level than the 19-and-under case (where we used to often have world top-8 type results that looked suspicious for precisely the reason you say, but we are no longer the force we used to be, in the last 3-4 years). Re: Indian Volleyball (2012 Asian Junior Championships)
This has been a surprising performance for me. I had thought that our nice run in the juniors since around 2003 had ground to a halt when we did not make the u19 world finals in 2011 and 2013 (and the u19 team finished 7th in Asia last year). The u21 team last year also had finished only 4th behind Japan, China and Iran in that order in Asia (which qualified them into this event). Not having the u19 team behind them doing anything great for some 3 years to have some good players join u21, and this u21 team itself being only 4th in Asia last year, I am rather shocked to see that they have now already beaten the #1 and #2 Asian teams this summarily (JPN and CHN both in straight sets!). May be coach TC Jothish is doing his job?

Re: Indian Volleyball (2012 Asian Junior Championships)
Iran is in the other half of the draw, so assuming we keep winning, we can't meet them before the finals. Feeling more hopeful now.
Also, Russia beat Tunisia easily in straight sets so we face them next. They won their group, with 3 wins & a loss vs Italy.

The title of this thread must be old. Else, how are Russia and Italy in this championship? We should correct the title or move the relevant posts to a new 2013 thread.

Re: Indian Volleyball-Men's u21 World Championship 2013, Tur
Yes, checked the 2012 Asian junior championship results, and we had an up-and-down performance. We lost our SF to Japan by 2-3 after being 2-0 up on them but then lost abjectly (0-3) to Iran in the 3rd place match. So, we almost reached the final there. Nevertheless, this performance has been a very pleasant surprise!
