On current world rankings, India is #26, while Korea is #10 and Australia is #22. So qualifying among the two from that group of three is not very easy, I suppose. These are 4 year rolling rankings and so, nopt exactly a reflection of current form (India may be somewhat better than our ranking right now, I would reckon)
Here is how the three Asian qualifiers (each with 4 teams) went.
#15 CHN topped the Chennai (IND) qualies with #26 IND second.
#31 KAZ topped tha Almaaty (KAZ) qualies with #10 KOR second.
#23 IRI topped the Teheran (IRI) qualies with #22 AUS second.
#10 Korea not advancing at Almaaty and getting upset in 4 sets by the home team Kazakhstan, did not help us at all.
The good news is that this three-team playoff for the final two Asian spots will be in India. At Chennai, starting July 1st.
So. let us get ready to rumble next weekend in Chennai!!!!!!

It appears that the Chennai residents and volleyball lovers from all over are turning out in large numbers to watch the Indian team. There were over 8,000 fans when India played matches in phase one.
The Chennai residents are doing a superb job of cheering for the home team. Where are the sponsors who can help the Indian team reach the top at the Olympics and World Championships? The #1 ranking in the world does not come with ONLY determination, talent and hard work. Will some big sponsors come up with big bucks to help the team and make the game more popular among the masses?
Indians lament the lack of talent, but when some real gems are identified then where is help that these diamonds need?

Knowing that some of these gems are from Kerala, I would not expect anybody to help from India (that is how it has always gone for Kerala athletes/sportsmen in the past) - somebody from the Gulf would hopefully come through.

An interesting article in Hindu lambasting the preparation for these qualifier..

Just pathetic !!!Dhronacharya awardee Ramana Rao has been insisting that the players invited for the camp must maintain fitness when they go back. The Indian chief coach G.E. Sridharan seemed to have spent a lot of time on reducing their weight. This was an unnecessary waste of time.

What is pathetic is that The Hindu and its correspondent would stoop this low to speak badly of our team that is getting ready to play next weekend to make it into 2 of the 3 spots!! .. That they at least kept themselves in the reckoning is not worth anything?
Just pathetic.
Can't these people wait for just one week before writing an obituary on the team like this? I just can't believe this kind of crap. What do they think Indian volleyball is - Brazilizan volleyball?
It is not like we lost to some nobody. There is a reason why China is ranked better than us. Perhaps there is some truth to the fact that more juniors should have played but that is an argument that can be discussed after the next weekend. To try to kill the morale of the team is mind-boggling. Hopefully the players would rather take the local newspaper writing this junk, as the proper motivation.
The more I see this kind of crap, the more convinced I get that the sports writers and sports fans in India are still much behind the athletes they complain about, in appreciating how a "winning sports mentality" is built up in the society at all levels. What the newspaper just did shows the society's "loser mentality". You just don't do this before a big event that comes up. Period. The Hindu and MC Raman should know better
[and Kumar, I should slap you on your finger for saying that the article was ineteresting.. you should know better too ]

Oh Jay,
Take it easy on Kumar. He has a right express his opinion whether you and I agree or not with his views.
The Indian volleyball team has been one of the hardest working Indian sports teams in the past, and it surprised me that the players had not worked hard prior to the tournament. However, the phase one tournament should get the players into better shape, and the match practice against China, Thailand and Indonesia would help the team win key matches against against Korea and/or Australia.
Go Indian team and win a place at the 2006 World Championship.

Oh, I was not going after Kumar .. Just doing some good-natured banter, that's all. He probably did not see the particular angle about the article the way I did.
To me, some of these basic aspects of the "sports culture" such as bad-mouthing the team just BEFORE an event, are cardinal crimes. Wait till it is over and anything can be done to address the issues. The Hindu reporter did not have such basic sense of sports etiquette.
Lack of proper "winning culture" in sports is something that drives me totally mad. It is waaay too serious for me.

I guess you mean with respect to national teams in some countries. In professional sports in the US (where the sports culture is pretty well developed), the angst and criticism of the professional teams is legendary even before the big events (Red Sox before World Series, Eagles before Super Bowl, etc.). Same was the case with the US Olympic basketball team which was heavily criticized in the US media both before and during the Olympics. I think the players should use the criticism as fuel to prove the critics wrong.jayakris wrote:To me, some of these basic aspects of the "sports culture" such as not bad-mouthing the team just BEFORE an event, are cardinal crimes. Arjun -- those are exceptions. The Yankees get criticized, The Red Sox get criticized, and US basketball get criticized. That is because the Yankees and RedSox have such high payrolls and such huge fan support that no excuses and no sign of drop-off in performance is tolerated. Same with US basketball team when they go and lose to Turkey in the prep game for Olympics.
You are giving the exceptions to the rule, actually.
This thing about using criticism to motivate themselves is really not the case with athletes who are trying their level best to come to a higher level, like the Indian basketball team. The worst thing they can get is that the whole country is still not convinced. They should feel that our moral support is with them --- Indian sportsmen are never made to feel that way. It is always all this talk of them being chokers, and their preparations being substandard and all that crap. There is a limit to how much self-motivation sportsmen can get.
It does not help at all to see people like "big shot" Ramana Rao, sitting there are talking constantly about how juniors should have been included and all that stuff. I don't know what his politics is, but does anybody doubt that he has some axe to grind? We have seen enough of this in Indian sports .. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it is a probably a duck. Knowing how close he is to Indian volleyball, perhaps he is just genuinely sad, but I doubt it. What, he has something against GE Sridharan, perhaps (not accusing him, but I am just puzzled with about this kind of talk from him)? .. Anyway, the Indian newspapers have fully made used him to write these negative stories at the wrong time.
Here is an article in the Deccan Herald today - Team demoralized - Indians need to regroup quickly ..
It is a bit more even-handed than the piece of excement that The Hindu guy wrote. Once again, the big shot Ramana Rao is quoted to say that "sadly, we lack players who can serve well" ... If you are so sad, just shut up, go home and and cry, guy. Being a "Dronacharya" and a grat former player, one would hope that this man would have better sense.
Jay
PS: Of course, I am probably over-reacting, but I am never known to under-react anyway
