Indian Volleyball

Post by Dhruv »

I don't know how many of you have been following this story, but I have been seeing this team perform extremely well, first at the Asian championships and now at the worlds. It is an extremely notable performance so far and can only get better. I guess with the economy doing well in India and the present govt. (from last term onwards) spending more money in select sports and is paying off . Slowly but surely the Indian juggernaut is beginnning to move. Maybe we can be be the next China in about 10 years down the road.

I'm being lazy so... here is the latest article. There have a bunch of them in the Hindu over the past week so those of you interested can have a look see.

Indians set for the final assault

By M.C. Raman

Suphanburi July 8. It was time for the Indian boys to relax a bit before the final assault for the World Youth volleyball championship, now in progress here.

This is undoubtedly the greatest moment in the history of Indian volleyball because no national team has been in the first eight positions in world ranking in a sport in which 217 countries show an active interest.

For the rest of the story see the Hindu (hey they deserve it too)

edit by Jay on the newspaper link.  Dhruv - for future reference, remember that the Hindu website links become inactive after a day.. The file name is the same and it is available only in an archive directory with dates as above.  Actually, they have the archive directory active immediately on the current day itself with the article in there, but the mirrored current day directory changes - so I always manually fill in the dated URL though it is not linked to from anywhere at their site till a day later!

The teams that have made it to the quarter finals are:

- India (defeated Australia 3-0)
- Thailand (defeated China 3-1)
- Puerto Rico (defeated Egypt 3-0)
- Brazil (defeated Italy 3-0)
- Czech Republic (defeated The Netherlands 3-1)
- Russia (defeated Iran 3-0)

Iran and Australia are the remaining two teams that made it to the quarter-finals despite their losses.

After Thailand defeated China the Chinese coach said, "The host side played well, but the referee also helped them with biased decisions. I'm not happy with the way the referee did his job." Sour grapes or truth???

Hey, all Asian countries are known for a bit of home cooking, so perhaps there is something in what the Chinese coach says. But how much really can a referee do in volleyball?

.. Always fun to see any Chinese team get beaten, by the way..

According to the match report from Thailand, India used "technique and tactics" to breeze past Puerto Rico in the quarterfinals. As pointed correctly by Jay and Shashi, Iran would be India's biggest hurdle. However, India had defeated the Iranian team 3-1 (25-23, 30-28, 23-25,25-20) in the finals of the Asian Junior Championship in April.

Congratulations to the Indian coach G.E. Sridharan for preparing the team well for the championship.

The Indian team prepared by practising seven hours a day for a month at Visakhapatnam and Bangalore.

And unlike the other teams that have brought several coaches, trainers, physiotherapists, doctors, etc. the Indian team is accompanied by two coaches only!!!

India plays Iran at 17:30 (Thailand time) or 10:30 GMT on July 12th.

They beat Iran at the Asian championship final in Vizag three months ago, so hopefully we'll get a repeat. I was in Bombay the last two days, and it's good to see the wide publicity the Volleyball achievements have received. It is truly wonderful to see India emerge on the world stage in a new sport that is widely played across the country, but in which we were mediocre (even in Asia) until a decade ago.
Here's the Indian Express report:

Hockey, tennis, now volleyball: Indians are winning, and it’s not just cricket

Sandeep Dwivedi

New Delhi, July 11: It’s a record any sports team would envy: beat the world champions, beat the North American champions, beat the Australians. In three consecutive matches and in the same tournament. That’s what the Indian volleyball team has done to reach the semi-final at the World Youth Cup currently being held in Thailand.

Hailed as India’s greatest achievement in a mass sport (cricket, hockey, shooting, chess aren’t mass sports), what makes this performance more significant is the fact that it comes on the back of Indian successes in tennis and hockey, proof that there is life outside cricket.

Amazingly, India currently have an all-win record in this tournament; their victims include defending champions Brazil, Puerto Rico, Poland and the Czech Republic and they’ve dropped just one set along the way.

India play Iran in the semis and, having beaten the other two semi-finalists Brazil and Czech Republic, are favoured to take the title. Indeed, India beat Iran a few months ago to win the Asian Championship at Vizag. Even Suresh Kalmadi, who’s seen it all as president of the Indian Olympic Association, calls it ‘‘a truly outstanding achievement.’’

What makes it more special, he says, is that it has ‘‘come from the youth and will have long-term benefits for sports in general in India.’’ The success may be a bolt from the blue for most but not for K Murugan, general secretary of the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI).

‘‘This is the result of a sustained effort; things have been good for the past few years.’’ He rattles a list of recent highs: Under-21 team finishing second in Asia, quarter-finalists at the last Youth Cup, seniors finishing fifth at the Busan Asian Games.

What’s the reason for this sudden surge? M H Kumar, the coach of the junior (under-21) team, talks about the long-term development programme undertaken by Sports Authority of India and the VFI where they short-listed 60 juniors from all over the country in 2000. ‘‘Besides raw talent, we considered height: only the boys who were 1.90 meters tall were taken. For the past three years these boys have been groomed scientifically,’’ he says.

Even so, the climb to the top in India is tough for any sport other than cricket — sponsorship is unheard of and government support not consistent. As Murugan points out, ‘‘There have been instances where we don’t get government clearance to go abroad, in which case the federation arranges funds.’’

Will this success change things? Arjuna Awardee and senior team member Amir Singh is nonchalant. ‘‘We’ve long performed without sponsors, our federation takes care of us. We won’t run behind sponsors, let them chase us.’’

YEAH!!!! YEAH!!!!

We are in the final !!!!

PTI reported just now -
Sanjay Kumar and Vikash Tomar were in a devastating form as India defeated Iran in a battle of two Asian giants in the semi-finals of the U-19 world volleyball championship in Suphanburi, Thailand on Saturday. It took India 81 minutes to overpower Iran 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20). This was only the second time that India had dropped a set, the earlier occasion being against Brazil.

They now meet the formidable Brazil, whom they had earlier defeated 3-1 in a group match, in the final on Sunday. Meanwhile, the defending champions Brazil beat Czech Republic 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-19) in an hour and 13 minutes
How about that? .. Let's get them Samba boys once more and become world u19 champions! .. What a fantastic story.

Great job by the juniors. you can follow the match scores live here
and also the macth schedule are here

If you want we can schedule a chat at this time and cheer on the Indian juniors against the perennial powerhouses brazil. So a sport which requires height, agility, speed and endurance and Indians are doing well at it :). I like the fact that now some of the sports feds are doing a much better job. I guess some Babus finally figured out what to do or maybe what not to do..

A post from the Indian express http://www.indianexpress.com/full_story ... t_id=27451 following their success

This is what has been lacking in Indian sports and it is good to see various orgs do their part. Over 25% of the Indian population is between the ages of 10-20 so if these sports bodies take things seriously we can easily be the next sports powerhouse and a top 5 or top 10 nation in world sports. If Australia and Germany which are small countries (population) why not India which has a massive pool of raw talent (250 million -->25% of 1 billion) to choose from.
