Anju George Thread (Athletics:Long Jump)

Post by BSharma »

According to The Times of India article, "Ace Indian long jumper Anju B George's campaign to win a medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics got a boost when she set a new personal mark of 6.65 metres to win the gold in the Jim-Bush Southern California Championship held on Sunday in Los Angeles in the US, where she is training under former Olympian, Mike Powell."

Way to go, Anju George! We will be rooting for you as you take the gold medal winning jump in 2004.

Yes she has been performing extremely well ever since she started training in the US. I guess another thing that I could have added to my ramblings in the junior thread.

Anju George Thread (Athletics:Long Jump)

Post by BSharma »

Anju George narrowly missed a bronze medal at the Golden Gala Championship in Rome. She finished fourth in long jump with a leap of 21 feet 4 1/2 inches. Elva Goulbourne of Jamaica finished first, Tatyana Kotova of Russia finished second and Grace Upshaw of USA was third. The top athletes were present at this meet and Anju's performance was spectacular considering that she went this summer to California to train under one of the best coaches in the world. I think she has a good chance of winning a medal at the next Olympics.

Silver medal for Anju!!!

Post by BSharma »

Anju George is gradually becoming India's best bet to win a medal at 2004 Olympics. Yesterday she finished 2nd in the long jump event in the Stockholm IAAF Super Grand Prix tournament in Sweden. Her jump of 6.49 meters was second only to Sweden’s Carolina Kluft's jump of 6.59 meters. Spain’s Concepcion Montaner came third with an effort of 6.48 meters.

Indian athletes have the talent and desire to do well. Some of them just need proper coaching to get to the top. Go Anju, win a gold at Athens in 2004.

9th World Athletics Championship

Post by BSharma »

Anju George finished third in Group B to qualify for the finals in long jump today in France.

Earlier Neelam Singh became the first Indian women to qualify for the finals in a World Athletics Championship and finished 12th in discus throw.

India's 4x400 meter women's relay team is also in France.

Good going, Indian women!

Anju George Thread (Athletics:Long Jump)

So, PT Usha never made it to a World Athletics Championships final? -- That comes as a surprise to me..

Anyway, good to see two Indian women doing it this time.

Post by Florian Buechting »

Anju Bobby George just got the Bronze Medal in Athletics Long Jump World Championships by jumping 6,70m in Paris! She even lead after the first leg of jumps! I ripped some pictures from the Eurosport TV channel, I don't know it is legal to post them in the gallery! Incredible day for Indian Sports!

Yours,

ANJU WINS A BRONZE!!!

Post by BSharma »

Anju George won the bronze medal at the World Athletics Championship in France. She had a jump of 6.70 meters to clinch a spot for the medal ceremony.

Anju has been steadily improving ever since she went to California this year to train under one of the best coaches. I think she has a good chance of winning a medal at the Olympics next year. By then she would have trained in USA for a year. Who knows she might get the GOLD!

Anju George Thread (Athletics:Long Jump)

PT Usha made an interesting comment on Anju George: she said that Anju did not relax
and enjoy winning the gold at the Busan Asian games but promptly went into training.
She pointed out the general tendency is to sort of take a break, enjoy the limelight,
collect the various cash awards given after winning something like the Asian games.
Maybe this explains our general lack of success at higher levels. Maybe our athletes set
their goals too low.

Anju George Thread (Athletics:Long Jump)

There was a report in today's Hindu that Anju's bags were stolen while she was
training in Paris-- lost her passport/credit cards/cash etc. The Indian High Commission has given them a temporary passport and helped them a Schengen visa. But they are
without cash but hopefully she will make it to Monaco.
